AnyName: The food is too salty for me, but if they suck so bad why are there so many of them? Why aren't all the great places you fickle connoisseurs go to opening new restaurants all over town? "Most people suck/are stupid" is not an acceptable answer.

/I don't cook with salt so most places are too salty for me
//Applebees is decent for the $, IMO

most people are afraid to try anything new. they crave the familiar and unthreatening. because they suck.

also, a small independently-owned place is going to face a lot more hurdles trying to open another location. if TGIFridays new location doesn't work out, they can absorb the loss. a single guy with a restaurant trying to expand into new markets isn't as easy (although it can be done - there are some good regional chains out there).

I don't like chains, but it's not a problem with the food (although it is generally mediocre at best) - it's what it represents. the assembly-line, megacorp style of feeding makes us seem as though we're little more than cattle at a feedlot. and like those cattle, we're eating stuff designed to maximize profits at the expense of our own health.

Bomb Head Mohammed: 20+ years without eating in any obvious chain (unless you count a Greene king pub or pret a manger, both of which are kind of exceptional for different reasons). Enjoy your tripe, proles.

I don't think they serve tripe at most chain restaurants. Unless it's a chain pho restaurant.

/Just sayin'.

Sun Worshiping Dog Launcher: There are good things about Applebees? Oh, right, I forgot, it it is a good thing when you are walking out the door. It is even better if you are walking out the door without having eaten there.

CSB: When I was about 14 my dad took me there (19 years ago). This was probably the second time I had ever eaten there, and I got a hamburger. I ate most of it and promptly felt my gut roiling and I knew I was about to puke. looked down and realized that it was mostly uncooked. Their burgers, at least at the time, tasted so weird that I didn't even know the meat wasn't cooked well. I got up, walked in the bathroom and puked my guts up. Turned around and walked out with people staring at me and then realizing there was a horrendous smell coming from the bathroom. I thought about announcing loudly to everyone what had happened, but I figured that end of the restaurant was about to be cleared out anyway, so they got saved from the food no matter what.

I have a deep, abiding hatred for Applebees.

My BF at the time had a stepdad who refused to go out to eat anywhere that wasn't "AMERICAN".

God, I hate Applebee's almost as much as I hate his stupid definition of what constitutes "AMERICAN" food.

/weird thing was that the ex - and his mom, his stepdad's wife - were South African
//shrug
///also, my mom has gotten raw chicken on a salad there
////stay classy,Grizzle Applebee's.

wedding vegetables: also, a small independently-owned place is going to face a lot more hurdles trying to open another location.

this may be BS, but the BF told me that the third location of a business is the riskiest one to open.

The local grocery where he works is losing money on Location #3, and we got bunny supplies for a year since Local Pet Store opened Location #3 and went out of business within the year.

Also, plenty of local businesses just don't want to go through the hassle of trying to maintain quality as quantity grows, and I don't blame 'em. There's a reason you can't get Zingerman's anywhere other than Ann Arbor (save some bread and coffee, and mail order), in spite of the fact that they're incredibly successful, enough to get a NYTimes effing slideshow and article.

Igor Jakovsky: Out of curiosity, do all the sit down chain restaurants get such a bad rap on fark? Chilis, TGIFridays, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, (I know ya'll hate Olive Garden), Ruby Tuesdays, basically any TGIMcScratchy's type restaurants?

I like all those places, especially Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse. If you actually put a dish from one of those places down in front of the coonts who always biatch about chain restaurants and told them it was homemade, they'd eat it and think it was awesome.

If I was on death row, my last meal would be a Texas Roadhouse porterhouse and bacon cheese fries, Olive Garden's chicken alfredo and breadsticks and a Chipotle burrito plus chips and guacamole. To drink, I'd want a case of Yuengling.

The REALLY sad part, is Oklahoma has a good shot to win the Nat. Champ. this year.

'Cause they have a shiatty schedule.

The obvious guess, is they will win 'em all.

But TRUE obvious guess is they will lose to the SEC team with a loss or two.

//Two loss SEC team is better than ANYTHING you guys got.

I want to thank the former Applebee's servers for solving the Applebee's steak mystery. My ex-girlfriend ordered steak there once - that was the second to last time I ate there. It didn't taste right at all.

The last time I went, they managed to make a cup of French Onion Soup taste like ass, the half sandwich that came with it and the underpoured drinks didn't help. That was like three years ago, and because my buddy had a kid that he had to bring along.

Microwaving/deep frying everything explains the suckage. It also explains why the Riblets I used to order were tolerable before they took them off the menu. It just seems like a food item complimentary to a microwave. If that's their business plan, they should at least play to their strengths...

/Used to work at a Chili's, nothing too bad to report - although I would take a local ma & pop tavern if given the choice. Nine times out of ten - friendlier, tastier, and more generous on the pour than Applebee's.
//Stick to ribs or fajitas at Chili's - the menu is weak and so are the fries.

2011-08-03 03:15:10 AM
Look, the problem isn't that the food is, at best, mediocre. It's that it is both mediocre and expensive. I can cook far better food at home for less money, and I can go to a cheaper restaurant and get better food that way. That's not "elitist" or "snobby" in any way. It's responsible.

2011-08-03 04:10:39 AM

IAmRight: Just order chicken strips and it's pretty much impossible for anyone to screw it up if you're so goddamn whiny about food. It's like Fark is full of people who are proud to be a bunch of b*tches when it comes to food.

It's not a f*cking gourmet joint (no one ever said it was) but it fills your gut and, unless you're SWDL, it pretty much never makes you throw up or have the sh*ts. And that makes it adequate.

Because there's no better food than adequate food.

We got our stakes precooked at various temperatures and simply microwaved them to heat through before serving them.

Any of you who claim to actually like anything from Applebee's would do well to just stick to the frozen dinners aisle in your local supermarket. It costs less, and it's the same food.

So that's why they once told me they were out of medium-rare hamburgers!

What do you mean? How is hating on these fake restaurants snobbery? Instead of paying 12-16 dollars a plate at a sit down fast food restaurant that does nothing but marketing fried chicken strips twelve different ways, I'd rather pay 4-6 dollars a plate cooking for me and my roomates. The food is better, tastier, and cheaper. I can go to a real, actual restaurant for about 12-16 bucks a person where my food isn't garbage heated up by blazed high school seniors.

ITT are food snobs.

I've never had problems with applebee's food. It can be a tad high on the salt, but I've had decent service, decent food, at a decent price.

Maybe it's because you farkers live out in hickville and got Bubba frying up your burgers in some dog shiat.

Been to Applebees in a lot of different places/states...never had something as appalling as undercooked food but they were changing the menu I swear once a month - I never knew what the hell they had at any given time, so it was hard to justify going there when I had no idea what they served. Every time since ...about 4-5 years ago, when I've gone to one the service has been slow. I've seen the managers have to come out all the time and apologize to customers. The last time I went, last year, the place was dead save for me and my group, and another family. Drinks were still absurdly slow and the staff was not friendly at all. The food itself has never been stellar or stunning...I've had better tasting and more memorable meals at other chain restaurants like Texas Roadhouse FFS.
It's just been so overwhelmingly "meh" that I don't like going there anymore, I can get better atmosphere/service/food for the same price in other chains and feel like I didn't waste my money.

sanriosucks: I love this. I go to Crapplebees about once a week, despite knowing that I won't have a good bowel movement for the next two days. But... My options are that or taking my chances at the pirate bar (really, called "the mutineer") down the street, which is only good in theory. You have to drink 2 for 1s and get steak towers somewhere...

Wait, you choose Applebees over a PIRATE bar???

What is wrong with you??

The only reason to go to Applebees is their happy hour. Cheap beer to wash down some half price Spinach and Artichoke dip is never bad in my book.

Crossed two toll booths in middle of nowhere land. They were so random.

I figure that they knew that you weren't going to stay or spend more than maybe 100USD total on food and gas.

I defintley have no love for the Bees, as I worked there for 4 years. However (bad spelling notwithstanding), the steaks were not "microwaved at various temperatures", they were raw, as most steaks are, and placed on the grill and cooked to order.

The larger issue is that Applebees has turned into our local version of a club. They have "black light nights", karaoke nights, all kinds of club type stuff when they are supposed to be just a restaurant that has a bar. It sucks. Perhaps the decline of our local Bees is because we are in a sort of rural area, but I don't believe that. We've been to several while out of town with a gift card and they've sucked equally. It's gone downhill.

With the downturn in the economy over the last two years, Applebees gave their franchises carte blanche to 'innovate' locally. Live music, karaoke, singles nights, etc.

/knows a franchise exec.

Or maybe restaurants who have bags of premade food and microwave them really aren't the be all and end all of dining. It's not generally horrible food, but it is overpriced for what it is. I can get better and fresher for less at local places.

It's just the business model of large chains. They have to cook to please everyone, and they thrive on predictability. These days, that means bland and cooked at a central facility and shipped frozen.

It's not being a snob to prefer eating at places where you can get better food cheaper.
