FlashHarry: regindyn: You're taunting the guy with a sniper rifle.

just to clarify: i'm taunting a guy with a stock photo of a sniper rifle.

i just love it when people make veiled threats and then aren't man enough to come out and say what they mean. it's like the guy with the "it's time to water the tree of liberty" sign, who, when confronted, pusses out and claims he didn't mean anything by it. bull-shiat.

In that guy's defense, his hoverround is only so fast.

One year I spent about $600 on MMA lessons, 5 days a week for 6 months. I soon realized I should have just bought a gun.

I agree with you.

I own a ton of stuff I don't 'need' but I own only because they provide entertainment. I think if target shooting or whatever is your cup of tea, then you are free to do it.

I'm a pretty liberal person, but with that I also feel people have the freedom to own firearms.

Guns kill people just like a fork makes you fat.

you have what looks to be a .50 cal sniper rifle, and you've stated that it's not for hunting animals. that suggests that you bought it to kill people from a distance. did you buy it to kill people from a distance, BillSmith70?

You're taunting the guy with a sniper rifle.

Why not?

Why do people need those kinds of guns? I can understand if you are hunting...but still. And I don't understand the appeal of shooting at things in the desert. People do stupid things with guns.

Who said anything about need? They are fun to shoot.

You buy furniture, you tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. buy the sofa, then for a couple of years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled, then the right set of dishes, then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug.

Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things that you used to own, now they own you.

I play video games involving guns. If I lived in the country, I would probably own real guns and target shoot with them.

I think it's part of nature. It's how we have evolved to fight and defend ourselves. I don't have claws or giant teeth or 600 pounds of muscle like a gorilla.

It's fun and rewarding to know you aren't dependent on others for protection.

i would agree. and i understand why you'd have a shotgun or handgun for these purposes. but a barrett sniper rifle is a very specific piece of equipment. it has one job to do: killing human beings from a distance.

this is hardly a home-defense weapon.

As a liberal and a huge fan of guns I understand where the "fun to shoot" mentality comes from. What I can never understand is overkill weapons like the .50 cal. It has no real world purpose(civilian), and is not very accurate. I much prefer accurate weapons, like 1/2 MOA accurate for rifles.

Actually, that isn't the purpose of the Barrett. It's purpose is to disable light armor vehicles from a distance. A .300 Winmag chambered sniper rifle would be better for traditional sniping purposes.

then you probably don't know much about them, or the what the average gun owner is like.

guns are tools. tools that have very practical uses, but which also require practice with in order to be effective. enjoying that practice is not dysfunctional.

what you should be more worried about is where you got the idea that people who enjoy firing guns are scary people, since it's completely inaccurate

2011-08-02 01:19:10 PM
Lets see. I had to buy new back tires for my car. I had to pay a plumber a couple of hundred bucks to fix a broken pipe under my house. That was July 4th, but close enough. I also had to rescue 15 kittens from under a house. That involved buying the traps to trap them, several large cages, food, water, medicine and litter. I also had to spend a ton more on gas driving everywhere to buy all that. And then run ads in the paper to get the kittens adopted out. So yeah, June and July have been kind of rough.

LOL!! Actually, the cops I met during my stint at the Coroner's office were pussies. They couldn't handle the sight of a dead body or the smells. Most were assholes, too.

Now, I'm sure there are some nice cops out there but I try to keep my distance from them in general. Helps to stay out of trouble.

lordargent: I bought six more gigs of ram for the desktop.

[lordargent.com image 229x57]

And a SSD and 9 cell battery for the laptop.

[lordargent.com image 640x401]

What SSD?

I think their prices should drop some by end of year as mostly early adopters of SataIII and buggy Sandforce controllers right now. newegg.ca has 60gb agility3 for $104 free shipping ($15 cheaper than .com). I remember paying $200 for 60gb vertex1 October 2009 (Then paid $130 for another 60gb vertex1 July 2010). Going to upgrade to 120 or 240gb SataIII model sometime this fall/winter for desktop and put 60gb in laptops or nettops.

Once you go SSD you never go back. HDD only good for storage now.
Desktop: SSD for OS/apps/some games and everyday used documents. A couple terabytes of HDD for movies/music/backups/storage.
Laptop: SSD with external enclosure HDD via USB.

Those 60-320gb 5400rpm HDD are slow as shiat. SSD even limited to SATAII are 2-4 times faster.

Sad really that there are all these decent dual core laptops with ok vid card (for web browsing/simple tasks), but the HDD makes them seem real slow and useless. 5 min to start win vista with no programs loading in background wtf. and yet running Lubuntu on USB stick only takes 1 min 30 seconds and that is with web browser auto starting.

The vast majority of gun owners are responsible owners and users.

It wasn't a linux rant. More of a rant that vista was a failure (only good thing it did was prepare companies/drivers/software for win7). 60gb hdd 1gb ram dual core processor laptops. Hey, let's put win vista on it and sell to the masses! What a piece of crap that was. And I'm talking about all the people who don't know anything about computers but wanted a laptop for internet etc were sold "email machines" as Microsoft employee put it.

I went from winxp->ubuntu->win7. Still use ubuntu variant on any older computers. I highly doubt owners of the old laptops would want to spend >$100 on upgrading to win7 when they can get a new laptop with win7 for $300.

Just because you see it called a sniper rifle doesn't mean that it's use is to snipe people. It is in fact a sniper rifle, but it's purpose is to disable light armor vehicles from a distance. EOD also found it useful to trigger IED's and other explosives.

Amen to this.

Good quality store-bought 50 BMG costs about $6 per round so it's not even that much fun to shoot. And unless you're really lucky, it takes a road trip to get to a place with a 1000 yd plus range.

Unless you're a complete dork who only shoots it on the 100 yd range.

Hmmm.... Dork. That word reminds me of people who pick some picture on Google images, link to it and act all tough about it.

cryinoutloud: unyon: Good. Downsizing consumption will require several economic contractions. Conservative greed and the market are doing what hippy policy never could.

I'm all for reducing consumption, but we have NEVER had any kind of 'hippy policy' in this country. It is always about making the economy grow by endless growth of consumption.

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that those proposed leftist policies had actually been tried. But the best way to reduce someone from spending is to erode the effective value and number of dollars at their disposal. Hell, even tax increases couldn't do the kind of damage to the consuming classes like eroding spending power does.
