Nye was talking about volcanoes on the moon. The interviewer brought it up as evidence against climate change. It was a complete non sequitur and Nye (very politely) called him on it. Nye wasn't presenting himself as an authority on anything.

If someone told me that a volcano on the moon was evidence of the superiority of communism, I wouldn't be presenting myself as a authority on economics by telling them that they are full of it.

But seriously, as a Fortean, volcanoes on the Moon do not surprise me. In the literature collected by Charles Fort in the early XXth century, there are a number of sightings of apparent eruptions on the Moon. In fact, a few ventings of gas have been noted by scientists since. These have been explained away by the dominant paradigm as the result of impacts--a meteorite hitting in shadow casts up dust or even gas and creates what looks like a volcanic plume.

As I understand it, these lunar volcanoes are few in number and feeble relative to Earth volcanoes because the Moon is much cooler and less dynamic. The volcanoes are probably venting dust and gases rather than lava. The great lava flows of the Moon (the "seas") are ancient.

But anomalies eventually get integrated into the dominant or else pile up to the point that they can be used to challenge the paradigms and establish viable competitors or new dominant paradigms.

This has been the fate of many of Charles Forts collected materials and even some of his jests.

Satire has a hard time keeping ahead of reality, as Fox News constantly proves.

Why would that be when every other study that confirms AGW is trumpeted? You guessed it! The cosmic ray theory is valid and it's going to destroy the current AGW "CO2 concentration as a climate driver" theory

But you warmers will never accept it. who cares. It's your children who will be carbon slaves to the ruling elite

So you believe one scientific theory over another scientific theory? I thought you science deniers hated science cuz it's way too hard to understand? And where exactly does your information come from? Certainly not from anyone reputable.

yeah, totally not credible
Svensmark is where you can start if you don't understand the cosmic ray flux / cloud seeding theory.

The moon doesn't have an atmosphere to protect it from cosmic rays, so why isn't the moon experiencing global warming too?

I am astonished an perplexed how a Fox mentality managed to connect volcanoes on the Moon with the idea "we aren't burning fossil fuels on the Moon". This later is part of a frequent denialist meme which implicitly states the following syllogism:

The Earth has warmed frequently in the past in natural episodes of rapid, catastrophic global warming..
There were no anthropogenic greenhouses gases in the distant past.
Therefore, anthropogenic greenhouse gases aren't warming the Earth now in a rapid catastrophic episode of global warming.

This syllogism is fallacious. It is the fallacy of the divided middle, IIRC.

Consider this argument:

There's been lots of episodes of rapid, catastrophic climate change in the past.

Therefore rapid, catastrophic climate change
is not happening now /
is not caused by humans /
is not going to be bad enough to worry about /
is something we can not do anything about except at exhorbitant cost.

There's always a fallacy in the leap from any scientific facts that the deniers may acknowledge in whole or part, and the conclusion they want.

Those many episodes of climate change in the past almost all involve asteroids, volcanoes and massive, sudden outgasings of greenhouse gases (notably methane and CO2), most likely triggered by the release of methane clathrates or deposits of carbon burning, etc.

Climatologists are getting a lot of useful information about present and future AGW from past episodes of non-Anthropogenic global warming.

Past episodes of climate change support and amplify our knowledge and climate science, they do not refute it.

But who do you mangle the two things together like that?

I've seen some pretty mangled claims and arguments from denialists, amateur and professional, and I've seen some statements (sometimes true) that contain mangled arguments in ovo, which is to say, implicitly but undeveloped.

But this is bizarre beyond all my experience. Did the guy have a stroke on air or something? It wouldn't have been weirder.

impaler: RexTalionis: According to the US Geological Service:

Volcanos produce 200 million tonnes of CO2 every year.

Human activities produce 26.8 billion tonnes of CO2 every year.

26.8 billion is greater than 200 million.

So humans release over 100X more CO2 than volcanoes.

Interesting...

I think anyone that ever states something as fact on fark, and they're off by over 3 orders of magnitude, then they should be banned for life.

I got my science in school. That place with the books and the tables and the frogs.

/And the 18 molar hydrochloric acid.
//Mmn mmn good.

Science education in school is still the most important, but there is definitely a place for science programming on television geared towards children. The television shows allow kids to see demonstrations of things that they may not ever get to see in the classroom, whether it be due to budget limitations or feasibility. Also, it's important to make science seem like fun. When it's just book learning and a chalkboard, in the middle of an already tedious school day, it seems like a chore to many kids.

Exactly.
