so this is a little off topic, but is the phrase "jew york" a recent invention?

if not, why did jessie jackson choose to refer to new york as "hymie-town" during the 1984 election instead of the more...well appropriate isn't the word, more suitable term? it just seems like if "jew york" is available to jessie in 1984, it is a waste of time to try to coin his own, less artful term. really shows a lack of presidential quality.

Well, I have no love for Jackson but anything Rick Scott is in favor of is by definition evil and wrong so if Jesse's protesting it, I agree with him.

"... opponents say it will discourage young people and minorities from registering or casting ballots."

Because they don't have the capacity or intelligence to figure out how to vote? Yet, they can be counted upon to make wise, well-informed decisions once you drive them to the polling place, grip their wrists and lower their hand to the ballot?

I'm with ya, Jesse.

I go with the exact opposite view. Anything Jackson is protesting must have some merit.

Seems silly to me, when I was in college North Miami Beach was where all the Jewish kids came from, it changes from time to time as pogroms commence.

I'm not sure why any of those potential changes would keep either of the groups mentioned from voting.

Anyone heard any details concerning his claims? I would look it up, but hinestly don't care enough about it to do it. On second thought, even if you do know his argument, don't bother responding to this. I don't care enough about it to check back in this thread.

Good night and good luck.

He basically thinks minorities are too stupid to figure out how to vote. That's essentially been his position since the 80's. He's a horribly bigoted moron.

Can someone explain to me how reducing the number of days you can vote early reduces voter fraud? I just can not make the connection.

You might be thinking of John Wayne Gacy. He just got of prison on a money laundering case, and was rumored to be involved with Amy Winehouse.

I don't know, I generally vote early in Florida because I work near the courthouse where the early voting is, but if worse came to worse I would just vote on voting day.

Every time I have voted early there are no minorities there, just 30 people over the age of 70 and me. You have to have a lot of time on your hands to vote early.

Absentee ballots. The only way to vote.

Because it takes time to either drive to the next town vote then drive to the next etc...It also takes time to cut and or dye your hair change clothes to re-vote at the same polling place under a diffrent name.

Black people are disproportionately poor. Young people are generally poor. Poor people move around a lot, and have generally inflexible work schedules. They cannot afford to miss work. Old people tend to have lots of flexibility in their schedules and also they tend not to move around much.

Given the hilariously low rate of actual voter fraud, we can assume that these laws are being passed to block the poor (and as such, the young and the black communities). It is a fairly transparent attempt to secure Republican victories by reducing the ability for traditionally Democratic-leaning groups to vote.

TL;DR: You're a dumbass, and Jesse Jackson is correct.

You know what, Rev. Jesse?
You're a good man, at heart. And you're right about this bill, it sucks.
It was a great day when we all marched side by side, back then, a long, long time ago.
But we're old men, now.
Our time has past.
Nobody wants to listen to us blather about the old days, or anything else.
Go home. Chill out.
It's time.

It's funny how there's no complaints about the intelligence of young people and minorities when it comes to them serving our country in the military, especially since it's mainly young people and minorities who make up the bulk of our armed forces. They can fight and die for this country and her freedoms (including that pesky right to vote) when it's asked of them, but since young people and minorities tend to vote for Democrats more than Republicans, somehow it's ok to make it harder for them to vote?

cig-mkr: Can't be too important, Big Al didn't join him.

I think Al Sharpton has probably been called by Allen West and Herman Cain. They've been playing the race card every time they get criticized.

As for this case, it's pretty obvious these clampdowns on voters are totally political. Look at Walker requiring state ideas to vote while closing DMVs in blue districts and extending DMV hours in red districts. Also some times are drafting laws where college ideas are insufficient proof of eligibility, but concealed carry permits are valid.

Also Rick Scott's drug-testing get rich quick scheme is brilliantly evil.

Uh, if they can figure out how to join the military you'd think they could figure out how to vote.

Funny how when Dems suspected voter fraud in 2000 and 2004 it was a joke and a non-issue. Now its 2010 and the GOP has an agenda to push through its a major poblem that has to be dealt with.

The timing is interesting is all I'm saying.

I just googled it and nearly vomitted. It was interesting to see Rachael Maddow's covering of Conservatives and I totally agree with her point. Its funny to see Conservatives fellating the big Gov schlong to force their moral agenda on an unwilling populace. The Left does it too but at least they open about it.

As for this Election bill, how will this affect minorities? It seems like every time someone tries to create accountability in the election system, something much needed, people freak out and say its racist and will hurt minorities. In this case, does it?

...the day of voting you go to the polls and vote. Fark this 'go a week early' crap.

That's not the question. The question is why we need early voting at all. It's not like election day is any big secret or springs up as some kind of surprise. Absentee ballots are available in all 50 states.

If voting isn't important enough to you to set aside time to do it during the 12 hours the polls are open on election day or get an absentee ballot, then your vote isn't important enough to count. If the polling places are too busy, it's the precinct's fault and they need to resolve the issue.

I prefer to vote early....but anytime Jesse Jackson is involved in anything....it means white folks are going to be giving up some more rights....because he sure is not helping the black community

Also, it is mostly illegal alien rights groups who are upset at the laws, because it now will be harder to have illegal aliens vote. Jackson must have got a wad of cash from La Raza or some other hate group....

They used to do it all the time in the 1800s. Some think it was how Edgar Allen Poe died. Thugs used to round up local bums and alcoholics--especially ones with heavy beards--and get them plastered on opium. Then they'd take them from poll to poll, changing their appearance slightly from place to place, i.e. first trim the beard, then the mustache, then their hair, then shave it all off, before dumping the wasted victim in the gutter. Some pols could get four or five votes out of one vagrant before he passed out; then his thugs would beat the guy senseless in the hopes he wouldn't recover until Election Day was over.

I don't think you could get away with that any more, however.
