this is fascinating, actually. and, yes, clever. i'm sure the GOP will never go for it, which allows obama to paint them as being completely intransigent. and if they DO go for it, they've lost for the reasons stated in the article.

clever indeed.

Just do it. I think I'm literally starting to lose sleep over this crap.

It's a shame Harry has to be "clever".

It's like dealing with a child who won't clean his room, but you don't have the authority to punish him, so you need to back him into a corner. Which is easy since (as children do) he only speaks in absolutes and can't comprehend nuance or negotiation.

However, also like this sh*tty child, the GOP will see what happened and just resort to having a fit and shouting "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Ahh... so that's what I heard Joe Scarborough mumbling about when I was getting ready for work this morning...

"Not real cuts. Just from Iraq and Afghanistan. All smoke and mirrors."

Expect to hear the phrase "smoke and mirrors" from at least 40 different congressional Republicans over the next few days.

Just heard the Teabaggers summarily rejected Boehner's plan a bit ago.

So now, this new Democratic plan, which contains EVERYTHING the GOP previously agreed to in the past, is on the table.

Let's see how they turn this one down and not end up looking even more like petulant little turds.

Today's GOP is the greatest threat the United States has ever faced.

Don't worry. I'm sure the Democrats will find some way to cave even more.

Aren't Democrats the party of caving in? What makes you think the Republicans won't go full retard?

What a joke of a thread. Liberals should not talk about complex issues that they could never hope to understand. The Republicans are turning down the debt ceiling deals because they are too socialist. The only compromise Barack Obama believes in is Kenyan Compromise. The Democrats will continue to vote for tax increases well after this deal has been signed. Nothing will hope and change. Stupid libs. Get owned, libs. I dominate you with my FOX News talking points. Get owned, libs. Stupid libs. Get owned.

The GOP doesnt care about saving money. They care about taxes and dismantling the welfare state.

I learned something today. The money we spend on wars is not real money so when we stop spending it, it's not real savings.

Just like the taxes on millionaires isn't real government income, so cutting it isn't reducing tax revenue.

Kind of sucks that the most powerful man in the world has been rendered completely neutered by all this crap, and has to have others take care of business for him.

I bet he was a hell of a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER, but he appears to be in waaay over his head.

Actually, it was Willie Geist that first suggested that there was some odd math there related to ending the wars on this morning's show a few minutes after the show started. (can't remember the phrase he used, but they joked about him not calling it "fuzzy" math)

You know, I hate corporations and wealthy people as must as the next liberal, but I don't care about making them pay more taxes. What will really fix the economy is if they pay higher wages to their workers. (Which will generate more taxes anyway!) How about that?

We're getting into full retard territory.

I really think the teabaggers are going to go full joker in batman DK on us. They want to watch it all burn, and bask in the glow of their glorious ideology proven right (by their own sabotage)

When you need 2/3 votes on everything and the minority party is utterly insane, well, just look at California's fiances.

They did the same thing there in the 80's, then went federal with the blueprint in the early 90's.

And here we are.

2011-07-25 09:08:28 PM
Oh my god. He's trying to guilt the wealthy into agreeing to pay more taxes. It's a shame that it's sunk to this.

1. Republicans are not fiscally conservative.
2. There is a sweet spot where lower taxes can result in higher tax income. This is neither impossible nor imaginary.
3. Taking less money from "the rich" does not equal "give money to the rich." This is a big misunderstanding almost everyone of a certain political persuasion has. "The rich" are still paying a vast majority of all tax money taken by the federal government.

Guess where this is from

Section 7

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.

The only thing worse than a government in default would be implementation of the GOP's economic plan. Either way damages the economy, but only one rewards the scum who've rigged the system for since Reagan. If we're going down in flames, I don't want my tax dollars to rescue the rich.

/Yes, I'm at the 'I'll take all you bastards with me' level of frustration.

2011-07-25 09:14:32 PM
This entire thing is a sham and merely a sign that our government is simply broken.

We've set a new precedent. Every single debt ceiling vote will have this insanity now. We've crossed the threshold here, allowing the country to be held hostage every single time we need the debt ceiling to be changed. We will be held hostage every time, since now its been proven to work.

I'm reminded of nothing so much as when the Gracchi in the Roman Republic realized they could use the Tribune of the Plebes to introduce legislation. It didn't matter that they failed or that their policies ended up winning (both are true, oddly). What matters is that event showed the Roman system was fundamentally broken and the system was unworkable. I fear we are seeing that happen now.

The way the Bush administration finagled things those costs were considered separate from the rest of the budget, so they conveniently didn't factor into deficit projections. How's that for "smoke and mirrors".

Not sure if this sleight of hand is still being employed, though.

The problem is that these Republicans in office doesn't think that Laffer Curve has a left side, where revenues go down as you decrease taxes. For them it's just assumed that we're always on the right side of the curve. It's pure dogma.

Of course, that sweet spot is theorized to be about 20% higher income taxes on the highest 10% of Americans...
