I used to ride street bikes a lot, and I would frequently do the novelty helmet, shorts and t-shirt thing when it was hot outside.

Even then, I always had it going through my head that I really didn't want to go down wearing so little, on account of the road rash.

When I ride motocross, I wear head-to-toe protection with all kinds of protection including armor and braces so that I'm as protected as possible in the event of a crash, but then I go zipping down the freeway on my street bike in shorts, a t-shirt and a tiny plastic skull cap?

I ended up selling the street bike (for economic reasons), but when the day comes that I get another, I'm definitely going to invest in good vented gear and make sure to protect myself as well as possible on the road just like I do on the track.

The guy in the article is having some fun and good for him, but I hope that he realizes sooner rather than later that it's not very wise, and starts wearing some decent protection.

Again, jeans may somewhat lessen road rash but if a car hit this guy then the jeans are not going to protect him at all from the force of impact.

I recently chatted with a guy who low-sided at 90+ mph on a public road. Full gear and helmet. No other vehicle involved. He described all the rolling in detail but emerged with some bruises and a totalled bike.

In my 30+ years of riding motorcycles, I always wear full gear and have been down only two times. The one that really hurt was a high side at about 10mph in a parking lot hitting an unmarked water drain hole that had been prepped for maintenance. It flipped me forward and I broke my collarbone badly- it will be a lifetime problem for me.

In both the above cases the difference in surviving was a full faced helmet. The guy I talked to who low-sided mentioned several hard hits on it and then siding face-first. For me, I slapped the ground, breaking my collarbone, and then my head smacked off the pavement. Without the helmet I had on, I'm not typing this.

So, tool in the video? At least he has a full faced helmet on.

Any motorcyclist who has survived their first year on the roads knows to watch every car around them with suspicion, especially the oncoming ones that might turn in front of you. Probably the single best piece of advice to novice riders after all gear all the time.

/10+ years riding/100k+ miles = never been down on the street yet

Those hurt just to look at, and I've seen much worse. Some people give me shiat for wearing squeaky "storm trooper" boots when I ride, but those pics justify every bit of comfort or expense I've given up in the interest of safety.

Wearing the right bits and taking a good learn to ride course will make your motorcycling experience much more enjoyable, and will help keep you alive when things go pear-shaped.

I've never had a bug fly into my jacket. I suppose I'm lucky. I live in the northwest where there are very few bugs. I hope I never experience first hand the story you just told all of us.

It was 94°F out today, and I wore a leather jacket, leather gloves, full helmet, and leather shoes with ankle protection. I still felt under-protected because I forgot to switch to my better back armor, which I'd left in my other jacket, and I've been meaning to upgrade my gloves and pants. My (relatively) light summer outfit:



This jerkface from TFA is soooo asking for a horrible accident, especially with all of the distraction he's causing. It's bad enough people are barely looking at the road. Now they're all whipping out their cell cameras. This will totally not end well.
