This story gets more and more horrible. I wonder if we're looking at what would happen here in America if the general public adopted the true idea of freedom of religion. I have nothing against the believers that just make Christ a part of their lives, but it's these farking crazies that think they're in some "war of religious oppression" that keep me up at night. The "one religion" types I'm surrounded by here in Texas are concerning. I'll admit, a lot of my friends don't give two shiats I'm an atheist and they're Christians, but the way this country has become lately, I'm worried we will start seeing a lot of "Christians with a message from up high mission" that tells them to kill 100 people just because a Democrat is still the president.

Oh. Well then, it's an isolated incident, nothing to see here. And of course it had nothing - NOTHING, I say - to do with his religion.

There was a link off of one of the sites earlier that claimed he was a neo-nazi. I haven't seen any other media follow-up but I wouldn't be surprised.

Wasn't Norway occupied by the original formula nazis? Neo nazism would be inconsistent for a professed Nationalist.

I think he's been identified as a "Christian Nationalist", though what, exactly, that means is a mystery to me.

I'm curious... WTF is the timing on this? This is a major, breaking story (and I know it's not f'ing news, it's Fark,) but why the 4-hour delay in going green? Maximum effect? Did the f'ing story fall at an inopportune time for maximum impact?

As a former white supremacist once told me when I asked him about a logical inconsistency in the movement's philosophy, "look, these guys aren't the brightest - they don't really care about contradictions in their beliefs."

2011-07-23 01:21:29 AM
And the death toll has skyrocketed to 87 from the initial count of 17, with possibly more dead on the island...

Been following the BBC on this one and I know it's Fark, but can't do snark on this one. Apparently this guy rounded up kids by using the police officer gimmick in connection to his earlier bombing and then shooting them point blank, and a few dozen deaths are from those who tried to swim away in the freezing cold water only to either succumb to the elements or be shot at by the motherfarker. No way this will get better before it gets worse. =(

Tonight John Bolton was on Fox trying desperately to convince people that they shouldn't rush to judgement and just because this guy was blond and white didn't automatically mean that he wasn't a Muslim terrorist because in Norway there are blond white Muslim converts and we just don't know yet. And this was after the news had already broken that the guy is a hard right extremist. I was pretty close to throwing something through the TV.

What, the article we linked a few hours back from a jihadi forum that claimed responsibility for an act of horror they did not commit? Yeah OK, they didn't do it. It still doesn't speak too highly of Islamic radicals now does it? They wish it was them? Wow OK. Way to aim high, douchebags, shoot for the stars.

All murdering extremists suck and may they all meet an unfortunate end.

From Merriam-Webster:

ter·ror·ism
/ˈtɛrəˌrɪzəm/
-noun
1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.
2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.

For sure we'll hear how he grew up in a liberal socialist society as being a contributing factor. Then there was the way Glenn Beck was always tying nazism (think white supremacy here) to socialist tendencies. The guy also had some sort of organic farm (think liberal). Glenn Beck types (whoever's doing his schtick nowadays) are likely to even hint that Norway's style of government made this inevitable.

Norwegian here.

I first heard about the bomb when the husband of one of my colleagues called to tell me that she had been hurt by the blast. Haven't heard more from him (or her) yet. The phone was in speaker-mode (cuz it's damaged) and then the entire office hit the news websites. If this had happened two years ago, there's a very good chance that I would have been hit by the blast. As it was now, I missed it by a couple of hours (and a couple of blocks).

The immediate reaction at work was that this was Al Qaeda still being upset about the mohammed cartoons -- even my muslim colleagues thought this. This made me very worried that it might turn my country into something I wouldn't like. Traffic casualties are a price we are willing to pay for motorized transport. Terror attacks like this are a price we have to be willing to pay for living in a free and open society.

I was deeply relieved to hear that this was the work of a home-grown ethnic Norwegian with no ties to Islamism of any kind. Norway has survived attacks from right-wing extremists before. We'll survive this too.

I'm glad they caught the suspect alive. It's easier to find out what goes on in people's minds when they're not dead. As far as I can see (judging by the local news and what I've read of the attacker's scribblings so far), the suspect is a right-wing anti-muslim, pro-israel, christian freemason. Also: Innocent until found guilty. Even this guy. Especially this guy.

There are some reports that the bomber got in a van with three other guys before the blast. Don't know whether that's correct or not. If it is, then ...

As for the rest for the world; thanks for the condolences etc.

Hmm. Well, I'm sure the following people are happy that at least they got to perpetuate the violent Muslim stereotype, and the fact that it didn't turn out that way will not lead to any apologies, but only help keep the lingering emotion of hatred towards Muslims percolating longer. After all, doesn't the fact that the following list of irrationally-thinking, fact-devoid bigots immediately blamed Islam for a possibly non-Islamic bombing and shooting spree just prove how dangerous Islam is, that they would jump to conclusions like that?

bikkurikun: Wonder if it's al Qaeda though, could also be extreme leftist/anarchists.

MikeMc: Religion of Peace™?

Smeggy Smurf: The AP also reports that a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges this week against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported from the country. The indictment centered on statements that Mullah Krekar - the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam - made to various media, including the American network NBC.

America was founded based on freedom of religion, as a place for oppressed Europeans to go, ppl attacked for their religion.

I wish all the Christian haters and Islam haters of every political stripe would read a book and understand this. More than any place on Earth, America was like this. America has ALWAYS had complete freedom of religion written into the constitution.

People who murder for religion are evil, however no major religion advocates this, at least not for most of its practitioners. Christian ones least of all.
