Okay, that's kinda creepy. It's almost like they're askin for this lady to get harassed.

A small pet peeve but why do local newspapers feel the need to publish the addresses of people accused of a crime. This detail never fails, even when the article lacks any detail they always stick that address in there as if it made any difference to the story.

Alvarez, 69, was charged with filing a fraudulent insurance claim.

I'd like to see a return of public floggings.

Upon seeing the video, her own lawyer withdrew from representing her in the claim.

Because you need to know when you are living amongst criminals, though the best way to tell is to ask yourself this question, "Does my town/city have town/city employees?" If the answer is yes, then you are living amongst criminals.

Cameras on Boston buses have also caught fraud. MBTA lawyers get a demand letter from a personal injury lawyer and match it to a video showing uninjured passengers arranging themselves as if they had been thrown around during a violent collision. Sadly, there have been no prosecutions.

From the headline, I was kind of expecting the video from some sort of town meeting where a woman lightly taps another woman on the head as she walks by, causing the latter (after a multi-second delay) to fall to the floor, wailing and rolling around like somebody hit her with a baseball bat.

Whatever happened with that, anyway?

Pfft. Amateur.

Philly's transit service got sued after a bus got in a very minor fender bender and security cameras showed people running from a block away to board the bus and scream "oh, my back!" when the cops arrived

Public record that you have to go looking for vs publishing in the paper for all to see are vastly different.

in the 10 years I commuted via NJ Transit commute bus (those 50 seat monsters) I was in 3 bus accidents. Each time I didn't know we were in an accident until the driver pulled over or someone announced we were in an accident. Never felt a thing.

The "best" accident was when we were at a bus stop one morning and some dude on the other side of the road pulled into a liquor store and forgot to put his car in park. The car rolled back out of the lot, across 3 lanes of SB traffic, over the grass median, across 3 lanes of NB traffic and into the bus. The guy came out, saw what happened and ran to get his car. I heard him talking to the driver and could tell he had been drinking. He drove off just as the first police car was pulling up. We all cheered the cop on when he sped after the guy. The worst part was that it took almost an hour for the police to write the report and take all our names (and ask if we saw anything).

reminds me of those 'world's worst' shows where people would be in a supermarket, look around, lay down in the aisle and their friend (accomplice) would go run and get security or the store manager and claim the person fell and hurt themselves...

Would point out that Subby's headline makes it seem like a**hole lawyer filed a frivoulous suit and then ran for the hills when it became clear that he was lying. Article describes a pretty ethical lawyer that did the right thing and got the hell out of Dodge when he realized that his client had lied to him.

2011-07-22 04:38:05 PM
I had a person try to sue for an "injury" on my property. (He was drunk and stoned and fell down some stairs) When the insurance adjuster came to tape recrod my side of the story, she couldn't stop laughing. It was his third attempt to collect for an injury; sadly, this was the only one he didn't collect on.

God this headline sucks. When a lawyer starts a case, all that lawyer usually has is the client's version of events. Once evidence is exchanged throughout the discovery process, after the lawsuit is filed, it sometimes becomes clear that the client is lying. In those cases, the lawyer first asks the client to dismiss the case. Once the client refuses (as is nearly always the case) the lawyer then goes to the judge and asks to withdraw as the client's attorney. This is not an uncommon occurrence.

In this case what the lawyer did was completely ethical. Once he knew his client was lying, he stopped pursuing the lawsuit on her behalf. The client was perpetrating the fraud. The lawyer was not.

This is typically done to prevent any ambiguity as to who the article is referring to. But, yeah, they didn't necessarily have to divulge her apartment number. And if they had her picture and published it, they certainly didn't need to list her apartment number.

If there's another Dolores Alvarez in the same city, she'll appreciate the press distinguishing her from the one attempting insurance fraud. That said, I can't think of any time I've seen an article use someone's exact address rather than a generic X block of Y street description.

Sad thing is that she was probably tempted by the "Been in an accident? We can help!" ad that the lawyer put on TV. As soon as the going gets rough, the lawyer bails and she's brought up on charges of fraud. The lawyer should go down with her.

I worked in the fair city of Lawrence. During a pre-holiday interview I asked the (then) Chief of Police what his department did to prepare for Halloween. His answer "This is Lawrence. Every day is Halloween." That was 20 years ago. I can only imagine what it's like now.

While this is all technically true, Lawrence has a long history of UNethical attorneys, doctors/chiropractors pursuing these types of cases, using "runners" from the Dominican community to go out and create plaintiffs and file suits with little to no merit. The story doesn't mention who the attorney is, but I think it's about 50/50 between this being an ethical move to withdraw, vs. a "get me the hell out of here since there's a video."

A friend of a friend risked harassment when her husband was arrested for trying to bang a 14 year old (or so he thought on the internet). The commenters in the article found his address and posted it. This guy was sitting in jail, he's not at his address. His wife and kids, however, were. It would make no sense for idiots to harass the wife and kids, who are already victims here. The website was contacted and the address was removed.

Doesn't really apply in this case, but be careful with wishing harassment on somebody. It might not even be the criminal who gets the brunt of it, but rather the innocent family members.
