"Torches", maybe?

Our society essentially enslaves poor people by providing so much welfare that they have little motivation to better themselves. Nothing like the fear of starving to death to get someone highly motivated.

Do these people get water assistance? It's not near so convenient, and I know it's not the same, but keeping your hair wet and sitting in front of/under a fan does wonders for me.

/haven't turned on the AC all summer.

If it will help, I'll turn my thermostat down to a frosty 68 degrees, and leave a window open to help cool things down for others.

Why, back in my day, if someone got heatstroke they pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and went off into a field to die like the old worthless dog they were.

On the one hand, you think about how people survived for years without AC. On the other, if you've ever been in the ghetto at 4:30pm in the summer, you know that AC would prevent a lot of people from getting shot.

I know it will mess up your fuzzy hair... but you will be cool. Still poor but at least you wont be dieing from heat or something stupid. You'll live a bit longer till your neighbor shoots you and grabs the rag and your new invention ...

Instead of cutting electrical subsidies, they should cut services for the mentally handicapped instead.Seriously, if they don't have the money to give they can't give it.

In Illinois we already cut services for the mentally handicapped. Besides that we spend all of our money on... Well, I'll let the last governor tell you:

"I Farking busted my ass and pissed people off and gave your grandmother a free Farking ride on a bus. OK? I gave your (expletive) baby a chance to have health care. And what do I get for that? Only 13 percent of you all out there think I'm doing a good job. So Fark all of you." ~ Rod Blogojavich

They raised our taxes by 66% during the lame-duck session. What more do they want from us? We are still $8billion in debt.

I lived in Boston for 6 years without A/C. As I understand it it's 100 degrees there right now. Then again they blasted the A/C at work and we actually had to use space heaters because it was so uncomfortable.

2011-07-22 03:12:44 PM
That's the thing about using other peoples money, Eventually it runs out. Maybe they should raise their credit limit. That seems to work.

I grew up without having air conditioning at home. This was in the 1980's and 90's. When the heck did it become a government sponsored necessity? I live in Ohio, it's like 100 degrees right now.

Also, should I sue my mom for abuse for not having air conditioning? As an American, I think I know the answer to this.

Walker: The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. It's the American way.

Actually not, the standard of living for those deemed "poor" has rose steadily for decades now. What you are complaining about does not exist. The correct quote would be the rich get richer and the poor become middle-class.

Unless you are very young, very old, or have major health problems, the heat won't kill you unless you're really stupid about it. If I were in charge of rationing this assistance, (and if the funds are limited, you will have to ration - you can't hand out money you don't have), I would prioritize the people most likely to actually die from the heat. If you're a young to middle-aged adult and don't have an infant at home, you're out of luck. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated and you should be fine. You might not be comfortable, but it's not society's responsibility to make sure you are comfortable. I think the states that are saving the majority of their funds for heating assistance are doing exactly the right thing. If I don't have AC during a heatwave, I'm uncomfortable. If I don't have heat when it's 20 degrees below zero, that's a real problem.

Why anyone would be in the ghetto at any time when they did not have to be is beyond me. But some people enjoy living on the edge.

That said, how did humanity survive for all those years before A/C? It is a damned shame that people have been conditioned to believe that they cannot live without their government handouts. This might explain the mess our economy is in. That and the moron in the White House.

If you will look at a map or a history textbook you will find that the places where people have lived without A/C for centuries and millennia are the places where they mostly still do so today. A/C are more common in the US than in Europe and more common in the parts of the country that wasn't really all that densely settled before AC became common. the people that did live in those regions without AC had a vastly different lifestyle. If you want people to live in those regions you have to tear down the buildings to build something more appropriate, make sure that they have a proper diet and exercise and remind them to have a siesta around noon.

After reading your profile, I love your post even more.

Putting aside for a moment your belief that you live in the Confederate States of America, let's focus on your claim that a good fundamentalist Christian has to accept the entire Bible as written. The Bible teaches the exact opposite of all of your beliefs. Have you ever read the book? The hypocrisy is stunning.

Only in America indeed.

Right now GOP members of congress are squealing like stuck pigs anytime anyone mentions returning the top 2 percent of wage earners back to their pre-2000 tax levels. Meanwhile dozens of people so far (mostly white, elderly and on fixed incomes, by the way) have died in this heat because they can't afford to turn on the A/C. I'm glad the 65-year-old man in Columbia County, WI and the 57-year old woman in suburban Kansas City weren't your grandparents.

Meanwhile the debate here is centered around references to urban blacks, fuzzy hair and ghettos.

Evil Egg is the only one who really got it. The French Revolution was a matter of human course. People will eventually get pissed off enough to kill you and take your stuff while apparently you'll still be trying to tell them why they shouldn't, and why they should be happy they have it as good as they do.

Keep it up. Fark the poor. See where that gets you, you ignorant shiat.

It's 90 right now and will remain in the 90s all week, but that's only because we're getting scattered thunderstorms at the moment. We're otherwise in triple digit territory this time of year. That's the temp, not the heat index. And yeah we have plenty of humidity mixed with that lovely Alabama air pollution so that when you step outside you feel like you're suffocating with every breath.

85 sounds like a cool breeze.
