My very first thought was "won't somebody think about the [grand]children. Thank goodness someone did.

Small time tweakers. If they could rip out a bunch of 100 pair phone cable then they might make some money.

If only there were a replacement material they could make the lines out of that wasn't so valuable, and could transmit voice and data much more clearly and with greater capacity. A material made of something so common as sand. Maybe someday...

When the power goes out, I can still pick up a landline and place a call. It's kind of hard to transmit useful amounts of power over fiber optics.

Besides, copper that's already in the ground is a sunk cost.

Fiber would be a solution but not cost effective in some instances. Depending on the demand 6 strand single mode would cover a lot.

love the alliteration but what struck me as funny is the article mentions there is no cell service in pedro yet the lines belong to at&t. after checking their site and us cellulars site, it shows that part of the state would be covered at least fair to moderate service.

Yeah...but it's AT&T.

AT&T.

Having seen what they describe as "good service", I hate to think of what "fair to moderate service" would look like.

true it is at&t and i agree with you but us cellular isn't that bad and there coverage maps covers as much as if not more of this area. and out of the other big companies sprint is the only one that has service although it would be roaming. interesting enough it being ohio, the straight talk plans offered by walmart would be covered there.
of course judging by where this town is the nearest walmart is probably miles away

Karen Waddle lives in Pedro. She said this most recent outage lasted four days, a cause for concern because she has grandchildren.

Tweakers stealing coppers really sucks.

Being the fourth time and all, it is time to get an emergency pre-paid cell, or get a phone connection that works through an existing internet connection.

It is time to think ahead of the curve.

I never understood why investigators don't go after the metal recyclers.

Last time I checked, receiving stolen goods was still a crime.

I assume it's hard to prove, the dollar values are low and Joe Voter couldn't be less interested (though they might respond to a "government harasses innocent small-businesses" narrative which would just make everyone mad and solve nothing).

I assume it's hard to prove...

It is. Scrap buyers around here (Chch, New Zealand) seem to operate on a principle of "show us an ID, we'll buy anything". As long as they record an ID, which may be stolen/fake, they are technically in the clear. I was in a dealer last year buying some scrap brass (model steam engine) and they had a steel drum half full of bronze grave markers. Now tell me what legitimate reason they would have for being there? Cemetery hard up to pay the groundskeeper? Yet they buy this stuff.

Pawn shops are pretty much the same deal. If you took all the stolen merchandise out of a pawn shop, there wouldn't be much left. Probably a treadmill, a 90's era PC, and some cheesy ninja replica weapons. But how is the pawnist supposed to verify the legitimacy of an item? They buy anything and take the hit when the plod shows up to recover stuff.

Just because an area is "covered" doesn't mean there is actually any service unless you go stand in a certain spot and hold very still.
When my then-current cell contract had run out, and my father was having medical problems, I checked into a deal on double lines and splitting bill with my parents so they could have a cell phone for trips (even close Dr. appts were 45 minutes away.. others were as much as 2 hrs+). It showed their area completely covered. Made the order, the phones came, I drive down to their house and nothing. If I went up to the very tip of their property, you could get a signal, but not a steady one.
Needless to say, the phones went back and had some choice words for AT&T's BS service map (which now shows a more correct coverage).

/2 years later and still have to go up to the same high spot to get just enough of a signal to make a call on my cell/text/use Net and Net sometimes still won;t work even if I manage to get it up to 4/5 or 5/5 bars

Never saw that before.

Years back, I found a bunch of "Pat Novak For Hire" radio shows on MP3 starring Jack Webb that someone had posted on a web site somewhere. Hilarious and seriously bizarre and surreal stuff that made me realize that Firesign Theatre had ripped off their Nick Danger character from Webb.

Webb really was a comedy genius. "I rent boats and kick scruples and do anything else that might make a buck. It's an OK living, and if anything goes wrong, you can always get your mother a visitor's pass."

I don't suppose copper wire is quite strong enough for a hanging, even of the short-drop sort. But it might be a fair tool for public flogging.
