oh you guuuuuuys, i come here to escape all of my moving drama and here y'all are talking about moving! i lived in the same house from birth to 18 years old, and in the 8 years since that i've moved 7 times (this upcoming move will be the 8th)...luckily all within the same city, but i still have a complete loathing for moving. when i moved in to my current place i swore up and down i wouldn't move again until the apartment fell down around me or i bought a house, but then our poop-head governor had to go cutting my pay so cheaper rent was in order.

images.icanhascheezburger.com

thatpaganwoman, muggsy's dad went out this morning to buy some fizzion tablets (miraculously one of the 2 stores in town that carries them is only a block down the street from his apartment), mixed up a batch, sprayed down a bunch of smelly luggage and coats, and says so far so good! everything he's cleaned so far is smelling good and he's only used about half a bottle, so it's crazy economic! we'll be stocking up for the new place!

You don't train her, she trains you!
but really a regular routine makes it easier for her.

For sure, a regular routine. Keep doing the same things over and over. My neighbors are in awe that I was able to train 3 cats to come in when I called...they weren't allowed beyond the boundary of the yard. And now, Chloe, is doing really well, too.

With her I take the broom out...I don't touch her or anything, but just shake it and she complies. Haha!

What did you have in mind to train? I've had luck placing the new cat in the kitty litter box as soon as they joined the household. Chloe had some issues for a little while after I got her but she was 10 years old. We took care of it with patience and consistency. Also, although Chloe is an indoor cat, I let her out but only with close monitoring. And a friend advised me to get her a rabies shot even though she's not around other animals. I do every year.

Lots of words...Here's a cat:

Best thing to do is go back through the last few Caturdays - I was asking advice and was given a whole ton in them.
Hope that helps a little.

One more thing, whether you are going to have an indoor or an outdoor cat is totally up to you. I made the decision long ago that the road I live on is too busy and so my cats have been, basically, indoor cats with some outdoor privileges.

And another cat:

Well, I trained my cat to come to a whistle, by whistling every time I fed them. Remember that they can get into some mighty tight spaces. Think baby proofing your house, and you will be ready for the furry heart stealers.

Well as I have a 7 month old baby proofing isn't a problem. But we've been having some problems with her not using the litter box and scratching the baby (not that she minds as she plays right back but still) and she has a habbit of clawing your face. Someone suggested to me to use a spray bottle when she does something wrong but I dont want her to be afraid of water.

patience and a bad kitty spray bottle, some double sided tape and at least half an hour of socializing will help kitty. also, play with them before you go to bed so that they use up some of that extra energy that would otherwise be used to attack your feet while you sleep. maybe some earplugs.

I trained my cats to ignore me. Training them to stay off the floors wasn't that hard either. You just need to be consistent and firm. Most of all be patient.

I think you should clip your cats nails as a start. As for the litter box, try nonscented litter, clay variety. Cats have a real preference for what they wee in. Sometimes they don't like rhe texture or the scent...I know some people who use dirt or sand and then they switch the whole thing out.

I don't know how much luck you're going to have calming a freaked out feral. I never had to do that. Maybe put her in a quiet room by herself for a bit?

Keep her in the bathroom, or in he carrier, and cover it in a cloth. Dark and quiet are the goals. You are a wonderful person to be doing this. St. Francis approves.

Elis J. cat came in for noms and went right back out. Still have not seen any kills from him since this spring. I wonder if he is eating them? Neighbors say that they have seen him with Chippers, but I have not seen it... Oh well...

Best news this week? New local ordinance allowing people to trap spay/neuter and release in the city. No permit. Excellent. Never knew we had a prob with ferals in the East end..but...lower income families..not surprising...a haz a sad with a haz a glad.

What are you trying to teach her? Whatever you do, be consistent.

I taught a kitten to not bit by gently bopping her on her head and saying "ow" every time she bit me.

For something like keeping off a counter, try double sided sticky tape or crumpled aluminum foil. Most hate the feel, although my mother has a cat who actually loves licking tape adhesive.

For don't scratch the furniture, provide plenty of approved scratching places.

Squirt guns are great for stuff you don't want them to do when you are there, but if the kitten realizes they only get squirted when you are there, they will only remember the rule when you are there.

I would advise frequently playing with the feet and bathing while they are kittens, then nail trims and flea baths (if ever necessary) are far less traumatic.

Good luck with the little one!

That sounds like an awesome idea! I'm going to request a mental health day for next Monday. After the day I had today, I've earned a mental health month! Plus, I'm going to see Meatloaf perform at a hot air balloon festival on Sunday, so I'll probably need the day off to recover anyway. :-)

domari: spinach gunk: yobbery: yobbery: We hit 101 degrees today. When I last looked at 10:00 it was still and it was still 88.

FTFM

That's OK -- temperatures like that can cause serious brain-bake.

How are you and the kitties coping with the heat so far? If anyone over there's gotten a lion cut (including you) I (a) am sorry, and (b) demand pics. ;)

[i870.photobucket.com image 450x338]

My long haired spoiled brat-cat gave me a bit of a scare this past week. Not sure at first if it was the heat or something else but he spent the afternoon hiding, I couldn't find him. When I finally found him he was very lethargic and wouldn't eat, acted like he was in pain. I moved him to my bedroom so we could keep an eye on him and a few hours later he was back to being his normal annoying self.
Cretinbob wanted to get out the clippers and give the cat a haircut. But haircuts don't really help long haired cats or dogs deal with the heat any better. The cat has been fine ever since, and avoided the haircut.

We don't have AC downstairs, only in my bedroom and my son's. We have fans everywhere else. It's gone up to 95 in the house during the day, which is kicking my ass pretty badly. I wanted to buy another ac unit for the living room, of course, when the heat gets bad, there aren't any ac units left in any stores. When the stores get in their shipments, it's in spring. When they're sold out, too bad.

The cats are managing ok, they find cooler spots in the house to hide. Like in the bathtub! I spend all day making sure all the cats have plenty of water and are cool enough, I do a head count every hour or so to make sure everyone is moving and breathing. I have a few that still have URI so keeping them cool and hydrated is important.

In a few months we'll be complaining about the snow. Such is life.

Last year I thought D'Artagnan had gotten overheated (hot day, black kitten doing headless chicken impression) until he finally flopped down panting.

I figured he could use some extra sweat glands, so I brushed some water through his fur (didn't want to dunk him; thought that would shock his system).
Got him cooled off, but he was still panting...turned out he was having an asthma attack as well.
Now he has his very own inhaler and a toilet paper roll to use as a 'spacer' - $60 for a pediatric spacer is too spendy for me (when the medicine itself was only $9).

L33t Squirrel: domari: That's only one of the many reasons I haven't been back here often.

If people don't like what I have to say here, then there's no reason to be here.
If I wore out my welcome talking about my rescue and asking for donations, so be it. Time to move on I suppose.

So I'll lurk and comment every once in a while, but I really have no desire to be a regular part of Caturday. I have important kitty things to do.

I can't speak for Cretinbob, he'll have to give his own explanations. He's been working weekends but still has plenty of time to post here if he wanted to.

Wait, wait WHAT? Someone's giving you guys grief? Screw them! Look, you two do good things, and honestly, I feel inferior when I see some of your posts. All I do is make smart-assed remarks on an internet forum and often end up attention-whoring while doing so. You guys are saving fuzzy lives and doing good things. And yeah, that stuff IS expensive, so you do need to find ways of getting outside help. While some of us can't contribute directly, you at least get out the word out to people who can spread the word further to people who CAN help. Blegh, I'm tired and incoherent, sorry if this isn't making sense. The short of it is that you guys are a better part of Caturday than people like me, and I, for one, love seeing your posts.

THIS.

I'd miss seeing domari and cretinbob...y'all are PILLARS of the Caturday community.
Please, don't go into lurk mode!
