Very CSB:

My husband is going to be helping train diabetic assistance dogs! :)

To start, I've gotta go back a couple of months. Shortly after I got back, I stopped into the pizza place where my sister works to snag some pizza for dinner and to BS a bit, since it was near closing. Her MIL was also there, with one of the living assistance dogs that she was training, as they breed and train working dogs. I started chatting a bit, as I hadn't seen her in a while, and at some point it came up that hubby is a Type 1 diabetic, and her eyes pretty much lit up. Apparently not only do they train working dogs, they also do helper dogs, and they were looking to breed diabetic assist dogs. I agreed to talk to hubby and see if we could help out.

Last week, I got a call from them. My sister's dog is due with puppies in another week or two, and since that dog's brother successfully trained to be an excellent diabetic assist dog, they decided to try to breed her for puppies specifically for this, since they know that she's got good genetic lines for it. (One of the few reasons that I support pure breeds.) What they're asking is that any time that the husband comes up with a particularly high or low blood sugar reading is that he soak a few cotton pads with saliva, sick 'em in a couple of zippy bags, label them with the date and sugar count, and put them in the freezer. The puppies will be trained by being given the cotton pads to sniff before they feed, so that from day 1 they learn to start recognizing the smells and associating them with a "good" thing. Yeah, it's not a good thing, but you know what I mean.

Eventually, the puppies will be taught to high- or low-five their owner to signal high or low sugars, and if they're really low, to retrieve juice drinks from the fridge. Other things, too, but that's the gist. It feels pretty cool to know that this kind of thing happens, and that we get to help out a bit. :)

/end CSB

Otherwise, it's been quiet here. Morris is becoming more cuddly and friendly; he's started purring, spends more time with us, and even after getting SAT upon last night still loves attention. (He gave me a look of patient frustration and got comfy again.) He's also got such a sweet face, too. I'm glad that he's decided to keep us. :)

Good morning folks, I did not take any pictures so far this week but I will try to get some of the boys this weekend. Still waiting for transport for the horses, its like expecting a baby, I know they are coming soon but I am waiting for the call to tell me they are on the van.
Miss Cassie disappeared this week, I saw her and the whole gang at the brick house on Monday and did not see her again until last night! I know she does this, and Mikey was not upset so I figured she was OK but I still worry about her. I suspect she has another home, she is more cuddly, still fat and not apologetic at all. I was putting the new mounting block in the paddock when I passed the little trailer she was just laying on the deck watching me.
I watched little Jerry get in the birdbath and lay down IN the water, he is always putting his front feet in water and playing but I have never had a cat that would get all wet on purpose. He looked like a little tiger.
Well out to feed then off to work, here is the water loving little guy form a few weeks ago, he is developing into a very handsome little tom.

Good meowning! wow is it hot and humid. My backyard hit 98.7 yesterday at 2:00 p.m. My son and I went to the city pool, but it got too hot, and too crowded so we came home.

Kitteh has been stress shedding all week, and presented me with a large hairball at 6 am. He goes out to use the litterbox, then comes in to flop on the floor and get in the way of traffic.

i have found he enjoys ice cubes in the waterbowl, which is ceramic.

I went home for the 4th of July weekend & grabbed this photo of our normally docile cat, Gizmo:

That was his reaction as one of my sister's kittens walked by me as I depressed the shutter button.

I just thought this was a funny one.

For as long as I've been using this, I dunno why I haven't corrected it to "Good Meowning!" Oh well. Multiple comments this daylit AM:

This is Gracie, who lived with some people I know for most of her 13 years until last eve, when she left for the Bridge. She was a very good dog, tho she had some health issues. Very affectionate, would happily come & drool on one. I did get a chance to skritch her last time I saw her. Have already expressed condolences to her mistress & master, who sent me her pic.

At same time I repair my Gd Morning pic above, I'm gonna repair this one for the lower line to say "you gonna be doin' good" or whatever equivalent fits.
Diabetic assistance dogs! Who'd'a thunk it? Except for whoever did. I personally will not be getting one, due to the current feline population here. But I'm gonna save your post where you just said all this, maybe I can pass it on to the local agencies FTI (For Their Info).

glad to see that no one has melted yet! thanks for all the good suggestions last week! i froze basically everything that could hold water, so i had big ice cubes to put in the bazillion water bowls i left around the house, and frozen jugs to put in front of my fans, and smaller frozen bottles that i stuck in socks and took to bed with me. with all that and lots of popsicles, cold showers (for me and the cats), and dips in the lake (just for me), the fuzzies and i made it through the worst of heat-pocalypse 2011. you know it's been ridiculous when this WI girl sees a forecast of 89 degrees and thinks "oh good, it's going to be cool today".

By the time Caturday rolls around, I will probably have lost my oldest pet. Bumble (thank you, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer) is 19 and a half, and is finally at the end of his game. Pure white Maine Coon, stone deaf from birth. He was the only one of his litter and was, due to his "disability", not show quality, though at his prime he was an amazingly gorgeous animal:

i.imgur.com
He's already ten years old in this pic.

He's fading from my life. He hasn't been in pain, but his light has been fading for a while now. My general rule is "no pain, no needle", so I've avoided taking him in for his ride across the bridge. But time is running out for all of us. The rest of the family is away, but they know exactly what's coming. We've all said our goodbyes. He slept against my side for the entire night last night, though I don't know if that was his intent, or just a lack of strength.

Jesus...I've lost family members and haven't been this emotional. No more words. Maybe I'll post more pics later. I need funny captions now. May not respond for a bit. Should do an errand, get my mind off it.

towards the end of the thread last week i asked about various cleaning product brands to deal with little miss tinkle toes, aka muggsy cat... i've decided in the meantime that the amount of things we need to clean and the size of them (sleeping bags and such) call for some type of homemade solution since moving is expensive enough as it is and i'd rather not spend a bazillion dollars on cleaners.

so i've been doing some research on various concoctions one could mix up to take care of cat pee and have found a few options... one a hydrogen peroxide based solution and one white vinegar based (both with baking soda and dish soap mixed in). anyone have any experience with something like this or secret formulas they'd be willing to share?

UNC_Samurai: My brood (Luna, Minka, Lebowski, Sir Robin, Napoleon) is very upset at me. I'm babysitting a 5.5-week-old unnamed kitten. Her mom had the little furball in her mouth while crossing through a friend's backyard. Their large dog spooked the mom and she dropped the kitten. The little thing is staying with me until Monday, when her new adoptive family picks her up.

Others I didn't forget, as I hadn't seen the copy or pix yet:
dahmers love zombie, Bumbles is still amazingly gorgeous, or at least was in the pic you posted. Forget whose words I'm pilfering, but "may he go gently into that good night, when it's his time." Nothing beats love in a loooong life, which Bumbles has had.
Good on yer for giving him that since he was dinky.
Not a funny caption, howsomever:

I have been to a lot of places, but I've never been in Cahoots.
Apparently you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport, you have to
be driven there.
I have already made several trips and plan to return again soon. I
have seen several of my friends there.

pretty much all businesses and newer housing here have AC, but it's common for older houses to have radiator heat, so laying the ductwork for central air is a huge PITA (and not usually a cost landlords are willing to go through for rentals). i currently live in a house that was built in 1906, so yeah... plus, i don't even trust the electric in the house enough to run a window AC (the guy in the apartment next to mine and i had to coordinate where we plugged in our things since we were blowing fuses every time i had a lamp on and he turned on his TV).

Try some peroxide so they don't go all welty and itchy...and I (at least) swear by A & DTM oinment for minor wounds, scratches, chapped lips (and knuckles!) and stuff like that.
It does help speed the healing...and it cuts down on some of the ouch and itching.

I'm very glad to be where I am in Florida right now. We've had our usual mid-80's to mid-90's with 50% or more humidity, but there's usually an ocean breeze to keep things moderated. I'm about 10 miles from the coast; farther inland it does get hotter. There ARE advantages to being surrounded by water. My cats still spend a lot of time out on the screened porch - they must like the H&H much better than I do!

Not sure what your reaction will be.. either way, you have my apologies - or, you're welcome.
Please do post more Bumble pics -- looks just like my "Luscious". I hope I have the opportunity to see her age to a gallant eldercat.

AlienNarrr!: Hey Everyone!
I'm just doing some last minute things and waiting for the movers and then will be in my place and
will hopefully get the computer and router up and running as my first objective so that I can caturday while unpacking to help ease my stress/emotional overload.

/hope to see you all on here in a couple of hours!

Can't wait to see the pics of your kitchen and/or bathroom!

Not truly funny either, but perhaps at least smile-worthy, for those who could use one. & no, I'm not accepting wagers on whether this will appear on pg 3 or not, as we're nearly too 100 msgs as I type.
