Didn't a major overseas newspaper (I want to say in China) run the "Congress threatens to leave Washington if new house is not built" story from the onion as fact some years back?

Is it a bad sign that when I see a blurred/pixelated profile pic it just makes me think it's porn?

Also, all hail the Onion.

I just went to my facebook and there is no post about gullible. So I went to the dictionary to find out what it meant. To my surprise the word isn't even in the dictionary.

Had to quit reading The Onion for a bit.
Enjoyed it immensely until it got to where the satirical news was just too damn close to the real thing.

And...I'm probably feeding the troll, but gullible is in MY online dictionary...
means easily duped or cheated.

Larf of the day, right there.

Buncha crazies on both sides of the spectrum. Even when I disagree with someone, at least they seem more educated or at least (mis)informed enough that they don't look like these mouth breathers that sit on FB for 5 hours a night.

The best posts are for the Planned Parenthood abortionplex. It is a sad day when really obvious satire is taken seriously without a second thought. My personal favorite is "Are you sure this is fake? It looks legit it has a date and location under the title and everything." Priceless.

The Detroit mayoral election of 2009 was won with just 26337 votes for Dave Bing. The current population (still in free-fall) is 713777. If I've got the math right, that's about 3.7% of the population that voted for Bing.

Mind you, that's Detroit. On a national scale it's more like what you said.

My bad. That was the special election primary. The actual regular election had a whopping 70060 votes for him, so almost 10%. :)

That's exactly what Rush Limbaugh says about welfare recipients... This isn't a new problem. See also, the electoral college and the days when Senators were elected by state legislatures, not a popular vote. Of course, we also didn't let slaves or non-property owning chattels like women vote. It's a trade off... ;)

I linked the abortionplex article when it cropped up, a friend re-posted it, and some of her more derpy friends who didn't get the joke were all sorts of outraged. It happens enough in real life that I would think some of these are real.

/My friend finally had to delete the link & the thread, it got so out of hand.

Um, Facebook doesn't (AFAIK) employ a webfont, so those would be system fonts. They all look like they came from Windows Machines without ClearType on

Here's what I want to know: Why protect the identities of these idiots by blanking out their names and pictures? They're on a public social networking site displaying their stupidity to the world. They deserve to be lambasted and recognized as ignoramuses.

I used to see a lot of these types of posts in my feed until someone handed me a hint: block all posts from people who post only items of a religious or political nature.

Life has been much easier since then.

It was the Beijing Evening News back in 2002.

This sort of thing has happened several times over the years, including in American news outlets. See the Onion's wiki page for a full list.

I second this. You really can't (or shouldn't) unfriend family members, but I find I can be much more polite to my cousin-in-law when I don't have constant reminders in my Facebook stream that she dislikes gay people.

Heck, I even have a few friends whose politics I agree with blocked because they post liberal OUTRAGE links five times a day. I like you, man, but...if you scream your head off at every little thing, it all becomes noise.

It's either "Rethuglicans want to grind up old people for cat food!" or "Libtards elected a Mooslem socialist!" for post after post. Geebus, people, get a life.

If I get a friend request from someone I haven't seen in ages, I usually send them a message - hey, how ya doing? got any kids? how's life treating you? - and if they send back a message about politics or Jesus, I ignore the request.

/like hearing about your kids, don't want to hear about your politics or religion

For most of those onion articles I could easily see someone not reading it and taking it as fact due to their preconceived notions, but how could someone believe that Obama does deal to buy everyone a parrot is real?
