(CNN)   Michael Vick backs dog fighting bill. And just so we're clear, he opposes it. The dog fighting, I mean, not the bill. That would be a self-negating headline   (cnn.com) divider line 81

OK, Mr. Vick. You got my attention with a good start.

But that's all this is. A start. And while I applaud you for it, trust is a long way off, and you've got a long way to go before I consider you a part of the human race again.

freetomato: I am the one of the biggest dog lovers in the world. I have five, and like them more than I like most humans. For a long time I thought he should be dipped in blood and rended apart by mad dogs. But I think (hope) he really is trying to redeem himself. He most likely grew up in a brutal and ignorant atmosphere that didn't know any better. If he can dissuade anyone from this horrific bloodsport than it has not been in vain, I guess. Also, throwing lots of money to animal charities would be really good on his part.

me much same. fellow i know told me in USA Southern states dogfighting is a regular occurrence, generation after gen. i don't know if this is true or not. i thought this miserable practice came over the Mexico border with the chicken fighter crowd.
Vick can still go Fark himself, as well as the dooshbags willing to hire him. I have more respect for junkies, hookers, dope dealers and used car salesmen than i do for M.Vick

Michael Vick is one irrecoverable traumatic spinal or neck injury away from being an acceptable human being.

Good way for him to rehabilitate his image. Not sure if it's sincere or not, but it's a start.

I think cockfighting has been in the American south for longer than there has even been a Mexico.

When does a society re-integrate the ones that go outside of what's acceptable and "repent" their anti-social behaviours?

Dude did time and is out around $160 million and hasn't mistepped since got out. Has even played better as a pocket QB than before he went in.

What else is he required to do to be "forgiven"?

That we don't have to hear about him?

The only reason we're hearing about him is because he can play football. If this were Miguel the gardener, or Joe the used car salesman...he gets busted, does time, and we never, ever hear about him again.

But no, this dude gets a press conference on Capitol Hill.

I have to ask farkers. What do u think. He seems to have paid his debt to society but inspite of being a fan of his something seems amiss. Do u really think he has changed?

Yes, I believe he has.

Did he become a saint? No. Has he done everything right since he got out and got a job? The evidence says so.

RoyFokker'sGhost: You know, this is all well and good. Participants and spectators in animal fights should get punished. But doing this for the kids? Really?

You really want to remove a bad influence on kids that glorifies animal fights? Ban Pokemon.

disingenuous, blames his upbringing/culture. Looked like a parole hearing with Tony Dungy as his attorney.

You can see his eyes light up when he mentioned a horse. Yeah, he knows about Filipino horse fighting. Probably still runs a stable there.

I'm calling it now. Michael Vick still runs an illegal horse fighting ring in the Philippines.

So, fark that guy. fark with an u. fark Michael Vick, just a scum with some talent and a second chance and he will pander, whore and do whatever it takes to keep his handlers happy and his pockets filled with cash.

Cash to keep his horse fighting operation going.

This is what Michael Vick did, with dogs.

/and still do with horses
//not an factual statement

I heard an interview with Vick together with the head of the Humane Society, who decided to join forces with him to educate people about the evils of dog fighting in addition to testifying in front of Congress.

Vick came across as genuinely contrite and regretful. I think in the context of all the disgusting and inhumane acts he committed, this is the best possible outcome. He served his time (perhaps not long enough- dunno) and came out with a mission to make up somewhat for what he did. I don't know what's truly in his heart, but stepping up in this way I think we can appreciate.

Nezorf: An excellent book if you want to read what happened to the dogs of Vick's "Bad Newz Kennels"

As a volunteer for a rescue that specializes in bully breeds and an owner of two, I wanted this man eviscerated by the public when I first heard about it. After I calmed down I was looking for a strict sentence, but he got off lightly. Still, as long as he isn't faking it for the cameras, I could eventually drop my instinctual grinding of the teeth when i hear his name.

/the man is still did horrible things and nothing can make that go away
//but if this is in earnest, he can be redeemed in time

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know there was a book about the Vick dogs. I saw the Dogtown episode on the rehabilitation of the ones there but will have to check the book out.

/don't have a pit but I love the bully breeds; some of my little mutt's "friends" are pitties

//am still amazed most of the dogs were rehabbed

I think that's less important than what he's doing now that he's gotten out of jail. I don't believe that he's going to schools and community centers to discuss his experiences to hold on to his wealth or other such arguments that people make. He didn't really have to face the leader of the Humane Society and testify with him in front of Congress. I'd like to think he has changed for his own sake, but more importantly his conviction and subsequent turnaround has brought up the issue and hopefully discouraged people from engaging in dogfighting.

If the above is any indication, he doesn't seem to have any regrets about the dog fighting.

For those who don't want to watch the interview, he says there is nothing he regrets about his life that he would change. Well, except for making that prison sentence shorter. Then he has a giggle fit with the interviewer about his joke.

Personally, I just think the man is saying what he has to in order to get the money and hasn't changed his ways at all. Maybe I am wrong and he'll prove me as such but until that time I will consider him to be a waste of life.

I'm sure he does. He wouldn't if he hadn't been caught committing the same crime. But he does now.

The actions of this vicious man is a violent stain on the community and the full penalty of the law is scarcely sufficient to deal with his ghastly crimes.

This law won't do jack shiat to prevent dog fighting. It will only punish people for doing what Vick did. In other words, he's saying the Federal Government didn't punish him enough. He's an asshole and everyone praising him for this is a dumbass. It's like if he lobbied the Feds to implement the death penalty for pot possession, except he wouldn't do that because he probably still smokes weed (NTTAWWT).
