Read most of the article and did not see anywhere in there where they made $30,000.00 (if someone throughly read it please quote it) the article did quote as saying a chipin widget got them $30k not sure how chipin works but if its like other you have to meet the goal to get the cash? It did go on say they awarded 40 ipads which would come to roughly $24k ($600/one) so they still would have had roughly $3k left over after payout assuming they got the chipin money. Moral is don't donate or bid or whatever on anything you can't verify ie red cross.

First of all, 40 iPads would take a gigantic chunk out of $30k. And as another posted pointed out, they were also supposed to include additional software that could actually cause the total cost to exceed $30k.

But that's not even relevant. The iPads were never being paid for out of the $30k raised. They were being paid for by some special awards committee or something.

I have no idea if it was an intentional scam, but it ultimately played out like one - the guy got easy money and did not fulfill his promises. That's a scam.

This piece of shiat did much more than rip off money from people: he's ripped off their dreams and it has had an adverse affect on innocent children. One of the comments that illustrates this point is from a woman who travels 300 miles for therapy. She was about to begin the process to get a communication device ($10,000 covered by insurance) but they take a year to get. She thought she won an iPad (which can do what this device does, as I've mentioned in iPad threads, but insurance doesn't cover iPads). So, she waited and waited as her therapists got frustrated and said that her child HAD to have an AAC device because they were taking up time for kids with such devices.

That one year wait is now two years.

I hope this guy goes to jail.

10 years ago I had to convince my mom that forwarding that "email" to 20 people in fact DIDNT feed the hungry in Africa for 10 days. That maybe something else was intended for the email. She couldn't believe people would be so unscrupulous as to prey on people's emotions for gain.

Yeah, she thought humans were inherently "better than that". And she was blissfully naive.

Because he promised somehow to give away 40 of them. That is around $23k to buy 40 of them (they are about $600 each right?). Seems as if someone wasn't happy with the left over 7k.

My wife said she was watching some reality show where a couple throws a $50k party to get toy donations for some hospital.
