I shoud have said Cities Service oil company which was one of the companies that Pickens legally extorted money from (greenmail) in the 1980s. Many people lost their jobs because of him and his investors.

Though this does remind me of the time when we created two artificial teams in NCAA 2003 to play each other. One team had all the stats maxed out, they were called The Nazi Supermen and the other team had the stats at the bare minimum, these were The Jews. The Jew's home field was called "The Camp."

Though that's not as fun as playing Base Wars where you get to pick the player names and manager names. The Jews were named "000-001," "000-002," and so on. They were managed by Hitler.

Still a hell of a lot better than OU in the name department.

Redneck? I wouldn't go that far. There are a lot of ignorant white trash, hill people, mountain people, morons in Oklahoma, but not anymore so than any other state. Redneck and OSU don't really have much of an association for many reasons, but primarily because Stillwater (the town the campus is based in) is sort of a little elitist town that thinks very little of anyone else around them. Kinda like New York City.

Besides, OSU's school color is orange. It's OU with the red.

A couple of people from Student Government Association want to add a "the" onto the front of OSU's name. That is perhaps the single most pretentious load of crap I have ever heard. That article fails to mention that he actually goes by "T." Boone Pickens. Even more hickish. Have you ever been to Stillwater? You can smell the pig shiat driving into that town from five miles away.

As an OU grad I would love to really attack this story, but unfortunately our stadium was also just renovated by a very rich and very self-centered man who recently past away. The name "Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium" makes me want to puke.

AntiNorm, your link is hilarious. Oklahoma State has been licking the drips from OU's teet for decades, and now wants to copy Ohio State? Classic.

If I recall correctly, it was only a idea that was just barely formulated and tenaciously put out for a few comments by the SGA. When it got published in the newspaper, it got decried immediately and the idea was shot down very quickly. I do not think it is being considered at all at this time.

You talking to me? I never worked for Cities Service, but I have friends and relatives in Houston who did.

By the way, the whole impetus for rennovating the stadium (and getting Mr. Pickens to danate his $$) was due to the fact that OSU's stadium was commonly refered to as "Rustoleum Stadium" due to the excessive corrosion that had been allowed to accumulate on the structural girders.



Their stadium seats 40,000+, but they can't seem to fill the seats. Hell, OU fills more buckets during a spring scrimmage that OSU does during the regular season.

Boone Pickens only gave the OSU sports program a GAZILLION dollars for their sports program so he could see them have a good season before he dies.

Your Oklahoma University Explainations

Back in the day, OSU was Oklahoma A&M, one of many scary ag schools trying to be cultish like Texas A&M is. They decided to get away from farming to an extent, so they changed their name to Oklahoma State (though Stillwater still smells like a farm).

At the same time, OU was known as Oklahoma University, since there really wasn't another university in the state worth mentioning (not that there is now). For some reason that got changed and now we are the University of Oklahoma.

As for stadium name, it is fitting that OSU let theirs be named after Boone Pickens. He, IMHO, is most famous in these parts for using his money to try a hostile take over of Phillips Petroleum Co. It failed, so twenty years later he spends his money to get his name on a second rate stadium.

As for mistaking OSU as the Sooners, that is just showing that you are an uneducated East Coaster. OU arguably has the best overall athletics since the calendar switched to 2000.

Forgot one thing, the whole Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Yeah, that IS a shame. The Gaylord family puts out some of the worst newspapers in the country!

Well, the only thing that really effects me, is that since they're renovating the stadium, I can't find a parking spot anymore. They took a quarter of the blue parking away for renovation purposes.

As an OSU alum that now lives in Norman, may I just say that both names for the stadiums are crap. Although both stadiums will look great when they are done.
