Here's a story about another chair, so that makes two chairs.

There is a definite zen to dumpster diving. I find great stuff frequently.

2011-07-17 12:14:15 PM
are they valuable? or just "important"?

2011-07-17 12:16:23 PM
So... How much are they worth? Or is this just a story about finding strange looking chairs by a dumpster?

2011-07-17 12:19:53 PM
Just what my house would need-two chairs from a dumpster that aren't comfortable to sit in.

2011-07-17 12:20:08 PM
Not trolling.
Just like most modern art it is ok but nothing special. Put out a piece quality 19th century furniture and it's gone in a second. Not that this is not nice but i'm not a fan of the "you have to learn to like it" mind set.

Paint them orange and they're like something out of Star Trek.

Incidentally, I despise people who paint perfectly good wood ;)

2 chairs, one butt.

2011-07-17 12:29:04 PM
Back in the early Sixties, my brother and I found a Governor Winthrop desk set out for trash pick up. It was almost exactly like this one:

images.craigslist.org

We dragged it home and with our dad's help, refinished it. I still have it in my home and use it daily.

People sometimes toss out really good stuff.

2011-07-17 12:29:30 PM
well, at least no one would need help soonish with those chairs.

/yeah, i know it's already been referenced.

Wow you are smug arn't you? A friend of mine made a chair out of fiberglass and paited it with neon flake panit. Very modern very cool he won several art shows and has gone on to make several more pieces. I would still rather have a Victorian peice in my home.
But hey, making stupid statements about education and taste seem to come easily to you so you have that going for you.

Also, dude needs to put on some damn shoes.

I just can't sport wood over plywood chairs.

TFA left out the important part: how much are the chairs worth? Did this guy go dumpster diving for super-rare but essentially worthless furniture, or is his impulsive decision to turn around going to pay for his kids' college educations?

2011-07-17 12:42:50 PM
I don't understand why people simply throw away stuff in good condition. At least take it to a pawn shop or give it to a charity.

2011-07-17 12:46:05 PM
I love mid-century furniture, and those chairs are cool. Although they don't look very comfortable. Guess I would have to sit in them to find out.

Now I'm waiting for the follow-up story about how some couple is suing for the return of their precious chairs that were stolen from alongside the dumpster behind their house. Something about how they were moving, or just had a flooded basement and set the chairs out of the way, when some guy roared up in his car and snatched them.

GreatBunzinni: I don't understand why people simply throw away stuff in good condition. At least take it to a pawn shop or give it to a charity.

For not taking it to the pawn shop, probably lack of knowledge of the worth. For everything else (including not researching the worth) laziness.

My wife used to dive a few dumpsters. Then her zen brought home a recliner. With a family of mice stowaways. I put my foot down ( on her,not the mice). Peanutbutter on a trap and it's snap snap squeal squeal.

MrS stripped the kitchen cabinets to find Red Oak under several layers of hideous paint.
/100 year old farmhouse.

Nice. Probably worth the $500 fine if you get caught. At least I've seen those signs near the dumpsters behind some businesses around here. Don't know if its a city thing or a merchant thing or a combo of the two.

It isn't some nasty construction grade plywood or anything though. I don't like the style of the chairs but I am not bothered by it being made from plywood.

Not much I guess, here is a good condition one for $400:

http://boards.gomod.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2336007761/m/8282979907

Since these have been refinished I'm guessing they are a fraction of that price, and probably a smallish fraction at that.

It is really a kick to rescue mid-century modern artifacts that nobody seems to recognize. You find it for like five bucks, and there is a picture of it in Dwell Magazine for hundreds, if not thousands.

You aren't making yourself sound any smarter.

And I'm not talking about your inability to spell.

Just an FYI:

Whining about "Modern Art" makes you look stupid when it is obvious you have no idea what Modern Art is to begin with.

And the old "my friend, kid, grandmother" could do it better argument is not particularly effective when talking about world design.

I guess I can't edit a comment? Anyway, there is a pair of these on Ebay that has not sold with a $3,000 buy it now price, though it looks like they got a $2400 offer.

So it would be enough to make the house and utility payments for a month, but not enough for juniors freshman year.

New, that style goes for between 700 and 1000 bucks.
