The problem is not the lack of compassion, it is far too much compassion. I am sorry, but when did it become the job of the government (or anyone else) to bathe and clothe us? When I was growing up (many, many moons ago) my Parents taught me there were certain obligations one had to fulfill to be a member of society. One of them was being as light of a burden on others as possible. It was preferable that burden be zero, but if not you damn well better be doing something.

You cannot tell me there is not a single YMCA or YWCA in the entire state that would not let this person avail themselves of the showering facilities and/or give them a full membership gratis. All they need do is ask. But if they can't expend even that trivial effort, then why should we help them at all?

I thought it was hokey the first time I heard it, but maybe there really is wisdom to be found in the creed of the Lone Ranger : God put the firewood there, but every man must gather and light it himself.

THIS! If you want to help out the homeless, there's nothing stopping you from donating your time and/or money to any number of organizations. Hooray for you if you want to do that.

Walker: I knew this must have been Honolulu before I even clicked the link. I have been there many times and homeless people actually live in the bus shelters. They have their shopping carts and all the belongings in there and have taken them over and the city and police say this is fine. If you are alone on a quiet street and want to wait for a bus it's quite scary to have to basically move into this homeless person's apartment to wait for it. They might get all stabby on you.

If you can see someone living in there, why would you walk in anyway?

Most communities have shelters/help for these people, which I support.

If you don't want it, and prefer to live in a bus shelter or bother people on the subway begging for change, you are annoying the rest of us that are responsible enough to take care of ourselves.

Right. And some people with cancer like it too but that doesn't mean that we ignore the facts. The fact is most people who are homeless would rather live in a shelter than sleep on the streets. On Oahu in Hawaii many homeless are war veterans (500 or 1,200)

Are these people still around? I need to hire them to wash my brother. He's 25 years old and will.not.farking.bathe. Won't use soap, hasn't washed his hair in years, and doesn't brush his teeth. Wears ratty t-shirts and sweatpants every day of the year, no matter how hot it is. And if we get together as a family, God help the poor souls who have him in their car (he sure as hell ain't getting in mine). It's embarrassing to be seen with him in public, and since he's a narcissist ("I'm smart! Why do I need to bathe?") and loves attention, he shouts whenever he talks to ensure that everyone looks at him (and us).

I should have been clear, in my previous post, I was speaking generally, not this specific case. I realize it might be difficult to get a shower in everyday when you're living on the street. (though I'm sure there are shelters where one could get one every few days).

I thinking in general, where even the indoors crazy people simply don't bathe.

Yeah, there are a lot of people on this thread who have clearly not spent much time in a big city, especially near a public hospital. Lots of homeless people DO NOT WANT HELP. You would have to arrest them to "help" them, and as has been mentioned already, this is unconstitutional.

Every year in Chicago, for example, it's damn cold sometimes. The police and several aid agencies go around early on cold or blizzardy nights and check up on the 'regulars' and anyone else vulnerable they can find. A few will take them up on the offer of shelter or a ride to a shelter. Most don't. A few of them die. It really sucks, but what can we do? Shoot them with a sanity dart?

I know a homeless guy. Not a drinker or druggie or anything like that. Probably a bit schizophrenic, but never violent. He has dozens of people he could ask and they would give him a place to stay, a car to use, some clothes, money, whatever. He'll take the occasional handout if offered but he never asks and always refuses a room or shower or anything that would get him a step closer to off the street.

As a society we agree that children are not capable of self-sufficiency, and when they lack suitable guardianship we trust them into a public welfare system which, while imperfect and probably even generally harmful, is incontrovertibly better than leaving kids to fend for themselves.

It's about time we returned to treating those with profound mental illness the same way.

You've never been to Honolulu, I take it? Homeless people all over Oahu, big camps of them on the beaches, particularly west of Pearl Harbor. It's the perfect climate to be homeless in.

I once saw a homeless guy take a crap in a trash can along Ala Moana.

I was stationed at Schofield Barracks after I got back from Desert Storm in 91. I remember a whole park in downtown Honolulu that was a sea of tents and lean-tos. As long as they stayed out of the Shorebird bar in the Outrigger Reef, I was cool with them. Was a huge fan of Germaine's Luau also, went twice a month for a year. Awesome spot to pick up tourist chicks. Took them back to Coconut Willie's, my other hangout.

We had one guy when I worked at Wendy's in the eighties -- after a few days, a couple of the guys dumped him in the utility sink and scrubbed him down with potato brushes.

He started showering before his shift regularly after that.

I vacationed on Honolulu in May, it seems to be the best place to be if ever you were homeless. They have the public beaches, the public restrooms, nice weather, and a lot of them live in among the banyan trees. One of the tour bus drivers told us that the govt pays to send the homeless to Honolulu when the weather is bad.

I respectfully disagree here, and i'd like to explain why.

As has been said in this thread, many of the people who need the government to step in to bathe & shelter them need this because they DONT WANT help, typically due to being mentally ill, not because they're just poor or cant find a place to live or some meager job to pay the basic bills.

A lot of these guys self medicate with illegal drugs and become dangerous. That's why the government should step in, for their good and the greater good of society.
