Now, for those who don't know, let me explain why 22 days straight sucks. Assuming this guy is full time, and assuming all 22 hours were at least 6 hours (full time retail/fast food hours), this guy worked more than 15 hours of over time per paycheck at one job. The tax man taxes at a higher percentage when you do that. Yes, working more than fifteen hours of over time per pay period will cause you to be taxed at a higher level. So really, not only did he give more of his life to this restaurant, but the manager actually cost him money. I actually didn't learn this until my now wife, then girlfriend, worked for Fidelity and learned some tax codes and rules.

I've heard this a few times and I've never understood how that would be possible. You're taxed on your total income for the whole year. They may withhold a larger percentage on that check (I imagine they just extrapolate that check out for a whole year and use whatever tax rate that would have), but you're still making more, right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

bah! SF is so overpriced! Just head over to San Leandro and you should get awesome fresh food for cheap. Granted, don't leave any valuables in the car and only carry the minimum amount of cash while walking, but it's worth it. Heck, Oakland and points south have great mexican (and central american) food. Just don't eat the fish tacos. They just don't taste the same as the ones in Mexico. Streetstand fish tacos in Rosarito are awesome, the restaurants taste just like in the States- boring.

I've always only ever seen signs like this online, never any in person. But I got my wish last week. At a small "mom and pop" restaurant that advertises the daily special on one of these signs, some one changed "Crab...." something so that it said simply "CRAB ASS." Seeing as how the owner is a grumpy old twat, it made me laugh my head off as I drove by because I viewed it not as sign vandalism, but one persons opinion about the owner.

The manager ended up putting in two dollars in place of the two dollar bill so the bank didn't charge us with fraud. I think he ended up giving it to a stripper.

the only one i ever saw outside of the infamous "now hiring losers" that were actually quite common, was during the 90s when the Atkins Diet craze was in full swing one of the Gas-station/repair shop businesses had a sign up that said "Low-Carb oil changes here". To this day I regret not having a camera for just such an occasion.

It's a story that could either be just a legend or real (snopes.com) that some customer walked into a Taco Bell and tried to pay for a meal with a $2 bill. First the cashier refuses it because he doesn't think it's real. The manager comes to the register and tells the customer to leave and that the bill is counterfeit. The customer is making a scene at this point so the police are called and when they come in to investigate a counterfeit claim they are confronted with a $2. They then tell the management that yes, this is legal tender and they are required by law to accept it. When management realize they're in the wrong they give him his burrito for free.

My first job was at a Taco Bell so I am really getting a kick out of these replies......

The scheduling there made me a bit insane. They love to have you close and not leave til 3 am, then have you come in at 8 to start getting things ready for open. They would also like to schedule me when I was in class. I was actually asked to skip to come work.

Anyways I had told them months in advance that I needed off on a Thursday and Friday and was promised to be off. The Sunday night before that I get told I need to work late and I am scheduled on that Thursday and Friday. I tell them I am leaving at 7 and I will be back to get my check. I was so pissed I accidentally the entire thing.

I moved up to Northern California and still miss the quality of the Mexican food in southern California. About a year after I moved I flew down to visit family. My mom asked me what I wanted for dinner the first night. A burrito from Pancho's! I was overruled by other family members who wanted Thai. I gave in for family unity, plus I like Thai food. So the next day I head over to Pancho's to get my burrito fix. They had closed permanently. The previous day was their last day in business. I never forgave my family for that mistake.

Dude, if you want good and fast where you're at, try Taqueria Los Pericos on Village Parkway. Otherwise, head down into Stockton and hit up Cancun or Xochimilco Cafe.

Yeah, but [morbo.jpg] modern wage slavery does not work that way. A manager who's a big enough dick to schedule you 22+ days in a row is almost certainly doing it to keep you and everyone else at 39 hours or less. (Or some other magic number below 40, according to local wage-and-hour or benefit laws.)

Working 20 hours a week isn't so bad if you're doing it over three days, but it's crap on toast if you have to do it over six or seven. Wal*Mart is the master at this. They'll schedule you for two non-consecutive half-shifts on the same day. And if you fold shirts from 8-11 and 2-5, guess what you'll be sort of unofficially expected to do between 11 and 2? It's not like you're going to take the bus home, and it's not like you can afford to spend three hours at the ass-end of town doing something else. C'mon, man, don't be a dick, these shirts need to be folded but JESUS HIMSELF WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SAVE YOU IF YOU CLOCK BACK IN MOTHERFARKER.

Let's say there are two tax brackets, 10% and 50%, and the cutoff is at $10,000.

If I make $9,999, what is my tax bill? $999.90. CORRECT!
If I make $10,001, what is my tax bill? NOT $5,000.50. WRONG! It's $1,000.50.

There is never--EVER--a dollar you can earn that increases your tax burden by more than a dollar. (Or for that matter, more than 35 cents under the present federal tax brackets.) Withholding ≠ taxes, and you can adjust your withholding.

Aldi's hires cashiers at $11/hr. Although I couldn't do that job 8 hours a day for $11/hr. I'd die of boredom first.

My friends and I hijacked a McDonald's sign one night. Unfortunately, this was before everyone had a camera on every mobile device., so I've got no proof.
The sign read "NOW HIRING CLOSERS!".
They boosted me up and I removed the "C". We laughed for a very long time after that. It just seemed so apropos.

BTW - 12 hours later and I didn't see anyone post the obvious regarding the very Weeners asking why this was news.

This restaurant is on a very busy street (Transit Road 4 lane highway) that goes across LANCASTER, CHEEKTOWAGA, WEST SENECA and WILLIAMSVILLE NY continuing up to Lockport. The zip code is 14043 which means the mail is delivered to Depew Post Office, that's it. If it was given 14086 the population would be much more! Google It and see just how built up it is compared to 1973 when it was just fields.

This is not some hick town in TN where only 3 people drive down it a day.

The company would go to parties and get paid a flat rate per hour to valet park the cars plus an bonus rate for every hour over. That was actually rather reasonable and understandable. Where we had issues was the tipping policy. When arriving on the job each night we had to surrender everything in our pockets, in every pocket. The company view point was that if you were an hour into the shift and a car key went missing and you had a car key, it belonged to a car that you valeted parked and not your car key. They also reasoned that any money on you belonged to the company. When tipped, we had to put that money into the tip box. The following Tuesday we'd get our tip pay, $2/hour. We made minimum wage plus the tip wage. Several of us did the smart thing. Figured that tip money was to us, and not the company, we'd go to the bank before work, get 20 one dollar bills, not turn in our stuff (bullshiat policies are made to be ignored) and when tipped $5 or more, turn in the one dollar bills. Now if you're wondering "Why not keep the money? Why turn in dollar bills?" We had to drop off the cars in a certain spot. Standing in that spot was the company enforcer (I don't know what his actual title was), his job was to make sure you took your tip money to the box. Now with 20 valets dropping off cars all at once, he can't watch you the entire way, neither can the other enforcer who made sure money actually got dropped into the box. This is how the switch was made possible. So in a night, instead of turning in over $400 in tips to the company, I kept over $400 tips and gave the company about $50 (singles were often just dropped into the box).

My last night there, after the last car was picked up, the lead realized the tip box was a bit light. We were ordered to stand in the lot, an arms lenght away from each other and ordered to empty our pockets. What ever came out belonged to the company, according to company policy. And yes, when wallets and car keys hit the ground, the corporate guys picked them up, citing that policy. When they came to me I said "No." They ordered me to, and I again said "No." They ordered me a third time and I said "You want to search me, you better have a cop and a warrant. Touch me and I'll get a cop and charge you personally with battery and then I'll sue this company for illegal search and possession." Then I walked away. They said, "You walk away we will assume you're guilty and fire you for theft." I kept walking. I was guilty of keeping money that was tipped to me. I'd rather keep it and get fired for being suspected of theft than to be caught stealing, surrender the money, and then be fired for theft.

I had a new job in under a week.

Not only does using "they" in the singular sound ignorant, the odds are that whoever does it IS ignorant. Quote all the obscure or wiki sources you want but you can't change that.

So 90% of English literature is obscure now? I only see this objection to the singular 'they' from folks that are poorly read, very young, very dumb, or some combination of the three. The rest of the world has encountered it so often in writing that they aren't troubled by it at all. Then again, judging form how close you came to mimicking Bill O'Reilly, I'm guessing you're a troll or a fan of his.

Either way: Garbage goes in, garbage comes out. You can't explain that.

Many of us worked shiatty jobs like the one described, where working every farking weekend and holiday (probably the night shift, to boot) was expected. Those of us who managed to get educated and/or do a good job and move on to something better have a reasonable expectation of having holidays off work and making a decent salary.

Man up, Nancy. Pay your dues. Then you can afford to take it easy every now and then.

So if everyone else in the office has 'paid their dues' and gets to go on vacation, but you, who put in the same or more time, didn't, clearly you just haven't paid enough dues yet?

Sorry, but the rules apply to everyone. That includes the sign guy.
