Five men were shot to death Tuesday night during a bloody day in Juárez in which 21 people were killed in 24 hours, Chihuahua state prosecutors said.

That just gave me an hilarious mental image for some reason.

I realize the whole situation is caused by the American demand for drugs, but, other than controlling arms flow over the border, is there anything the US can do to stifle this?

About the only solution I can think of would be to legalize all drugs, but that proposal's not exactly going to fly.

No. He said "in there anything the U.S. CAN do" about the situation. I'm thinking he was talking about real-world solutions.

How many innocents are dying because of these psychopaths.

Time to pull a Los Pepes, start by going after the family members of these criminal organizations.

They probably have miltary grade bomb shelters built in their corners of Mexico.

Marijuana is legalized, ok. Then cocaine...then heroine, then crystal meth, then gilnt.

Legalization goes so far, these gangs will gravitate to whatever makes money.

The majority of los Pepes were rival drug lords and enemies of Escobar and also paramilitaries.

But then again some of us might live in Colombia and actually know about los pepes.

Who cares? Spanish is a worthless language unless your dream career involves holding weekly meetings at a storage unit, reminding your always-napping, constantly-quitting, siesta-taking, moustache-wearing, white-women-oggling employees that the rakes need to be stacked head down, not the other way around.

theflatline,
The majority of los Pepes were rival drug lords and enemies of Escobar and also paramilitaries.
But then again some of us might live in Colombia and actually know about los pepes.

I am thinking in terms of sending a message. OK, Escobar was too violent or had too much of a share of business and had to go. It was other drug dealers that did it. The truth is there will always be drug runners, it is a question of how they do business.

Right now it is ok to kill a everyone in the room because there is one asshole that angered someone in Juarez. That is a problem.

There will always be drug runners, even if it is a crazy grandma selling weed in the neighborhood. Grandma usually does not gun down a room full of innocents.

Determine the asshole organizations that are killing civilians, and start by going after their family members, working their way to the top.

Monitor their communications and isolate and kill or capture them.

The next organization that fills in the vacuum will be more careful and Juarez will not be a slaughter house.

All said, the best place for the army IS pissing away trillions *over there*, babysitting OP's civil wars, night-raiding *insurgents*, you know, peeps who actually from those hoods -- anywhere but over here securing our own borders, letting in only folks supposed to be let in, and keeping out anybody and anything that's not supposed to be let in. And, oh, yeah, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper, too. A hell of a lot cheaper. Um, did I say it would be a hell of a lot cheaper? But where's the commonsense in any of that?

Jesus, I just read an article about this today. Apparently people who have been kidnapped by these guys are forced to fight each other in death match type of things. They're given machetes and are told to kill one another. So grim. So very, very grim.

/I assume the "winner" gets shot afterward anyway.

Los Pepes was little more than a coalition of Escobar's rivals using the grieving relatives of his victims as a fig leaf. In fact Los Pepes wiping out of Escobar's gang is what was largely responsible for shifting the cocaine empire out of Columbia and INTO Mexico. What we need is another Pablo setting up shop a little further away from our own border.
