ordinarysteve: This text is now purple: ordinarysteve: yes because one democratic president in 28 years was such a windfall for the dems.

Because 8 years out of 28 is awful, coming out of a stretch of 40 years out of 48.

youre forgetting about carter's term. but yeah the presidental order got a bit fuzzy after him, didnt realize how much of the time the repubs were in power since ww2. worst. left-wing. conspiracy. ever.

28 years out of 65 is a lot?

alltandubh: TheManofPA: So this means we can eliminate Fox News as a right-wing tool

This is really the only reason why US-based Farkers care at all about a journalistic scandal in the UK: it holds out the hope that American television's only truly conservative outlet will be silenced, and that broadcast news will return to being a monopoly held by those sympathetic to the Democrats.

The scandal here is that people think the rest of News Corp is any different. If Fox news could boost with this sort of shenanigan, they'd do it in a second.

TheManofPA: So this means we can eliminate Fox News as a right-wing tool and CNN can move back towards center and SIMPLY REPORT THE NEWS. That way we can have 24 hours news but only reports and factual stories. YEAH, we'll finally have no more spin and half-truths along with money-making agendas. This will help bring things together again and not over sensationalize the news.

/man can dream
//guess that would hurt fark though

Ahh yes, the days of the Hitler Youth anchor cloned with perfect hair and teeth reading off the paper / prompter. The only commentary on sports and entertainment.

farkeruk: cancelled my Sky package. Had fiercely angry phone call.

"would you like to hear about our offers to stay"
"waste your time, if you like"
"......."
"have you finished?"
"yes"
"Cancel the farking package"

I don't want them banned, but I ain't going to keep the SOB in business.

Just for info, and a slight threadjack perhaps, you can still keep using your dish for FTA stuff. There are options for Sky's Freesat, which I guess means just continuing to use the Sky box without the viewing card...

I have a Humax Freesat HD box, which is pretty nifty. Admittedly, I only get 4 HD channels on it (BBC HD, BBC One HD, Channel 4 HD and NHK World HD (Japanese news channel) but they do DVR models, and it does iPlayer over teh innernets.

No Dave on Freesat unfortunately; I do kind of enjoy re-runs of Top Gear etc as background noise occasionally but if you're TV doesn't have DVB-T built in, STBs aren't expensive.

/Good one for your ethical stand, BTW.

alltandubh: TheDirtyNacho: In my fantasy world, a collapsing News corp would take the current GOP incarnation with it. With no mouthpiece to spew its lunacy....

Openly fantasizing about a one- party state? Scratch a progressive, find a fascist.

Yeah, because the GOP is the god-given second party with no other hope for alternative. Either you're dumb, or just trolly troll troll

I am anti-piece of shiat. The GOP is a big piece of shiat that will inevitably write the story of its own downfall. The dems are a slightly smaller piece of shiat. I advocate they all be replaced by something not pieces of shiat. More than likely, they'll just be morphed into something else. I'm not sure where we'll find mysterious politicos who are not greedy and vain.

Somebody could come up with pictures of FOX news anchors raping babies and there would be plenty of people defending it in the name of "fair and balanced"

As one o' them thar lie-burruls, I can honestly say it's not the right-wing viewpoints that Fox News spouts that I have a problem with. What I have a problem with is them lying, not just about pushing an agenda but about the goddamn facts themselves. Fox is the only news organization ever to argue in court that they can deliberately distort facts and outright lie and still call it "news".

The saddest part: they won that argument.

You're assuming that Fox is a news organization. It's propaganda for profit; their reporting does not reflect reality. Heck, they even put on people like Beck and Palin who just don't make any sense. Palin finds it difficult to form complete sentences.

I used to be a Republican and still prefer small government, low taxes and small businesses. I dropped my membership when the GOP went batshiat with fundie nuts and fruits.

And the mainstream media sucks, too. It's just an endless celebrity circus. I don't watch it, either.

Where are the lawyers lining up to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of the people who had their data illegally stolen by google?

Frankly, none of the national infotainment media corporations in the US are worth keeping (I will not sully the word 'news' by using it to describe them), with the possible exception of NPR. I would prefer to see Fox fall first, because it's the only one that flagrantly and consistently lies on the air, but all of the others are basically sensationalist useless trash. Burn it all down and bring back actual news.

Also, I wonder what broadcast news org you're thinking of that's significantly more sympathetic to Democrats than Republicans in its actual content (other than MSNBC, which doesn't even bill itself as news). Don't give me the old spiel about who journalists vote for unless you can show some sign of it making it into the actual broadcast.

and how many u.s. farkers had EVER heard of News of the World before this?

if you still watch NBC after the Dateline story with the GM pickups that would explode during a side collision -- and the fake they concocted for the story -- you're a hypocrite.

if you still watch CBS after Dan Rather put forth that total crap memo about Bush you're a hypocrite.

if you still read NYT after the Duke lacrosse story, Jayson Blair, Wikileaks, you're a hypocrite.

if your savvy, intelligent, honest, and sincere broadcast and broadsheet news sources are so great, why are they all losing viewers and readers? isn't because they're so savvy, intelligent, honest, and sincere.

So, if employees of an overseas Murdoch subsidiary were bribing police, can Murdoch face charges under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act?

That's called an Aspen Pardon. Take one for the team, avoid a conviction if in the US.

All the supposed ratings cannot save Murdoch from being slain. Who'd think that the business would do itself in?

The News of The World was likely thrown under the bus as part of a greater decline in newspaper hardcopy readership and means the sister paper, The Sun, can run a Sunday edition. What a great excuse for a massive cost cutting exercise.

Murdoch himself will get away with it all because he's slipperier than an eel greased in goose fat that was greased in engine oil that was greased in lube. I think his son has been shipped off to the US, and Rebeccah Brooks seems to have been taken into the Murdoch fold as well. I'd love to see all three help responsible.
