It's amazing that pitchers don't get creamed more often than they do. Totally off balance and no time to react to a 100+ mph rock hard missile flying at your head.

Some pitchers flail wildly on the release, Greg Maddux was an amazing fielding pitcher, won a bunch of gold gloves with a delivery that actually ended with him in fielding position squared to the plate with his glove up.

Pitchers actually present a very small window in terms of presenting a viable target. To hit a pitcher, you need to have a perfect swing for that specific pitch (angle of the bat relative to the angle of the incoming ball, bat speed, contact surface area, meeting the ball at the absolute correct time as it comes across the plate and a myriad of other variables.). It's REALLY hard to hit it back up the middle at the same height (plus or minus a foot) as it came in.

/ the hardest thing to do in sports

He was on fire up until that inning and then it all fell apart horribly. I hope he's okay, that was really scary to see.

Reminds me of when Kuroda got nailed by one straight in the noggin. Link (new window)

His nose started bleeding immediately, I thought it was broken. I suppose all things considered a 'nasal contusion' is better than about anything else in that situation, given how close it was to his eye.

Yeah, didn't need to see that again. Ow.

/Not even going to spout it all

===================================================================

You know how many times I got clobbered as a pitcher in baseball?

In peewee (which i was standing there, obviously I didn't throw) I got hit in both shoulders, both hips, and chest. In minor league, I got creamed in both shoulders again. In little league, my only pitching appearance lasted 1 pitch and it careened off my ankle. The shortshop got the out though, so... yay?

I was a decent pitcher (and shiatty hitter) and loved doing it but getting creamed with linedrives everytime I took the mound was not desirable and so I quit.

My high school baseball coach had a standing offer; if you hit the pitcher with a batted ball you got a steak dinner. I got two in three years.
