The shuttle's time was up, but the fact that for now that NASA is no longer in the business of manned space flight for the foreseeable future is downright depressing. It used to be a point of national pride for us to be leaders in space exploration. It's really, really a sad day for this country.

I'd have a hard time imagining that guys with aero-space engineering experience cannot find a private sector job. For one, there are manned space programs in the private sector that could likely use them, and secondly I'm sure there are other industries which could use their talents. Automotive, for instance. I'd like to see what those guys could do for the EV world.

Could be an exciting opportunity.

We can still do that unmanned, and I feel that the most important thing we can do for space exploration is to pour all that money (and more) into the R&D side.

No it wasnt, liberal.

Nixon was allowed to axe the funding for the last three moon missions. Even though the rockets and equipment was all bought and paid for already, meaning the actual funding required for the missions was minimal. Then he also slasehed R&D funding for a better space station and the shuttle itself. Then even though it was explicitly stated the Shuttle had a service life of 25 years, Reagan didn't ever approve the funding either. And now the follow up to the Hubble might be stranded on Earth. That's called doing it very very wrong.

We were supposed to go off to Moon and Mars, and the program was underay. Obama stopped that and substituted outreach to Muslims to make them feel good about their contributions to science and technology.
