It's good to see a mother who is concerned, yet at the same time not completely freaking out, gonna sue the hell out of your establishment for a dinner rush, major holiday, complete server chaos, mistake.

plus, I love the idea of the 2011 "Get America's Children Drunk at Chain Restaurants" tour. It should definitely be an annual event.

This makes the second time a Chili's has been accused of serving alcohol to a child. Back in April, 2011 a Chicago area Chili's served a 4-year old a mudslide instead of a chocolate shake.

The mom should be grateful, she's got a crystal ball into what her kid's college experiences will be like.

" However, the 8-year-old passed out at the park during the fireworks show and the 6-year-old son was very wild, according to Bruenning."

So, daughters gonna pass out at a Frat party and be date raped... while her little brother gets arrested for brawling in the street.

And the youngest is going to shiat him/herself.

Hah! I made a similar comment in the red lit thread. You'd think the bartender would have had second thoughts at some point as he was dividing the booze into three kiddie cups.

That's one way to shut up the screamers.

Bruenning said her daughter told her, "'Mom, this doesn't taste really good,' and so I leaned over to take a drink to see if something was wrong with it and it was just loaded with tequila.

Damn, why can't I get pours like that at restaurants?

2011-07-08 11:48:48 AM
The real question is... how often does this happen and the 7 year old kid think it tastes fine, and nobody is ever the wiser, other than the parents are wondering why their kids are acting worse than usual today.

Also... how many times are 16 year old's "bartender friends at Chilis" "accidentally" putting alcohol in their smoothies.

Especially with blended drinks. People don't exactly sit around pounding frozen drinks to get drunk (MAYBE the occasional frozen margarita drinker). Definitely not strawberry-anything drinkers. In fact, bars regularly under pour frozen drinks because it is a great way to save money.

Maybe if you didn't order fake-alcoholic drinks for small children, this might not happen.

So they've screwed up two out of how many drink orders in that time?

Just sayin'.

So where I work, when we have an accident or some screw up, we sit down and figure out how to make sure it doesn't happen again - and that's not "fire the guy who did it". We fix the processes and procedures that contributed to the accident.

Apparently the restaurant industry is too stupid to catch on. I happen to know a young girl who was working the bar and did this. She was fired and yes, you did read about it here. But she is now working at another chain restaurant/bar, where the mixes for fruit punch are right next to the Sangria, etc. It's another accident waiting to happen. she suggested a change to her boss and was told to STFU.

If I were given alcohol as a little kid in a restaurant I'd take one sip and ask my parents why they gave me cough syrup when I'm not sick.

If it was the father he'd be in jail.

The mom faked it. According to this article: Link (new window) "Police used a breath-analysis test on the kids to determine their blood alcohol level, but the readings were negative, police reported. Bruenning said her children successfully completed field sobriety tests."

Now if kids that age , particularly a one year old, had the slightest sip of alcohol, one would think they would blow a measurable BAC. And yet they were supposedly passing out at the fireworks show hours later. Right.

Why would anyone want to eat at Chili's? I'd have to be drunk to eat that crappy food.

My kids like their smoothies with a shot of tequila on the side. Smoothies make a great chaser, so they say...

Alcohol doesn't metabolize instantly upon contact with the tongue, that's why a copy can't give you a breathalyzer until an hour (or so) after your last drink.

I'm wondering if a disgruntled employee decided it was okay to risk injuring children in order "to get back at the boss".

The cops apparently decided that they had not ingested alcohol. The police notes from the previous day's paper (new window) say "Officers investigated and determined no crime was committed." I would think if there was any evidence that they were given booze, a crime must have been committed.

Parent gives the drink order to wait-staff
Wait-staff, takes drink order to Bartender.
Bartender makes drinks.
Wait-staff picks up drinks and drops them off at the table.

I don't see the problem here.

Since when is a mudslide a frozen blender drink?

To really understand if they farked up or not, we have to turn to their menu. Which do they serve, alcoholic, non-alcoholic, or both, in terms of smoothies? Do they regularly put alcoholic drinks in children's cups?

I'm assuming they serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic smoothies, but you'd think that alcohol going into a kiddie cup would be a big red flag to the bartender. I think they about need to be fired or seriously reprimanded for that. It would be like someone asking to borrow your hunting rifle and then asking if you had anything smaller so that you could kill people with it.

Were any of these stories lately involving fake alcoholic drinks?
Smoothies, milkshakes and juice aren't fake alcoholic drinks. Almost everything but soda comes from the bar in these places.

Huh that makes 0 sense. They can't do it because it will be artificially high due to alcohol in your mouth. You aren't measuring the metabolites as those will be present even without alcohol. The kid should have been even more likely to blow immediately after a drink.

Just to clarify breathalyzers work by oxidizing ethanol to acetic acid, same as the body. Not only would measuring acetic acid levels be more difficult, but it also tell u nothing as many things result in acetic acid. Again, all a too early back test will do is give an artificially high number as it will be measuring your mouths alcohol content and not your bloods. In this case the fact that the kids blew zero immediately after the drink is even stronger evidence for no alcohol.

I too, wondered how easy it would be to pour tequila in the kids cups AFTER leaving the restaurant, then blame the restaurant...

The one here has 99 cent "Chilling Fruit Freezers" actually on the kid's menu ($2.49 without a kid's meal). You'd think that would be a regular enough kid's choice to not be confused, especially in not one (possibly for a waitress), but 3 kid's cups.

Here's an idea: Don't let the bartender pour non-alcoholic drinks. No sodas, no smoothies...just booze.

Chili's isn't a smoothie shop. Sounds like she asked for a non-alcoholic version of one of their alcoholic drinks, which is farking stupid.
