Long day, still working on the new house for Beeper the keet. Took the camera with me to feed yesterday morning and caught the early meet and greet, Miss Cassie and Forrest are to the right, Fiona and Jerry are talking, long tailed Flower is puffing, and lazy Tom just woke up.

So the boys have decided that the netting on the top of the chicken pen is the perfect sleeping hammock. I told them it was not going to hold their weight much longer. I guess when it is so very hot getting the breeze on all sides is the only way to sleep.
I watched Flower and Tom fall through today, it was bound to happen look how far they have the top pulled down. I had to go in the pen to retrieve the beasties. Lucky for them they dropped into the side with the baby chickens.

Never in my life have I laughed so damn hard. I had to look up the gummy bears song, so I had the right tune to the sweater puppies song. I'm just singing away, my husband is looking at me like I lost my freakin mind, and the cat just glanced at me and walked away. I have to tell you, the picture of you with your tassels, has been quite a conversation starter. How do you explain to a non caturday person what that is all about. LOL OMG... the life cycle of the hen had me laughing so hard, the tears were running down my pants...lmao.
Know you are loved, even though we have never met. You are a fighter, so don't ever give up.

hey everyone, i usually lurk in the caturday threads but i'm having a really rough night.

yesterday our kitten Samoa passed away. we found her in May. she was a stray, her mom was the nicest feral cat i've ever seen. she had 3 kittens and various people would feed her. (she hung out behind a local business) the mom was hit by a car and the little one was found and we took her in. she was skin and bones, and crying so loudly. she was shaking but stopped as soon as i held her i bottle fed her for a couple of weeks, worked her into canned food, then into dry foods. our big cat patches and our dog maggie both took to her (patches more slowly, but she did grow to love her) and she was cuddled and loved by our family. she had quite a personality, was very nosy, loved to play and very affectionate.

we noticed on tuesday that she was lethargic. we thought it could be the heat, so we made sure she had plenty of water available at all times and she started sleeping a lot. we called the vet and got an appt for thursday morning. we took her in and they did blood tests, saying that nothing had showed up at all, she was healthy except her core temp was a little low, keep her warm and cuddle her and bring her back in two weeks. we brought her home and she spent all morning in my lap, really limp. i gave her a little kitten formula with a dropper as directed by the vet. she perked up a little bit but was still so very weak. two hours after we brought her home from the vet she had a massive seizure and died in my arms. my kids are both wrecks as this is the first pet they have lost. i'm also having a hard time dealing with this. i keep wondering what signs we missed, if there was more we could have done. the vet told us that it does common and it could have been caused by the fact that the mom was a feral and the kitten may not have gotten the nutrients she needed in the womb. her name was Samoa and she was absolutely the sweetest kitten i've ever had. i hope that in some way that she did have a good life, even though it was very short. she was loved and cared for by my family.

this morning, my son was looking for her after he put out food for her, until he remembered. i spent most of the morning comforting him as he sobbed and fighting back tears myself.

i didn't know that a little ball of fur that we've had just shy of 2 months could leave so much hurt in all of our hearts.

It's funny how pets can quickly form a place in our hearts.
Not "HA! HA!" funny, but rather in the "Isn't it odd?" sort of way.
I understand how it can hurt to lose you cat buddy.

My girls used to have rats. I wasn't too hot on the idea originally, but darn if they didn't grow on me.
One in particular probably saved me from going mad while I dealt with a spinal injury.
I would fold up a towel and make a little "clubhouse" and put it on my chest with this white rat, Angel while I would recline.
Angel would crawl inside the towel and nap.
Periodically, she would come out and climb up my chest onto my shoulder and she would nuzzle me.
After 5 or 10 minutes, she would go back into the towel and nap a little bit more.
She never wandered away or caused any trouble while she was out on "snuggle duty".
I know in my case, my life was enriched greatly by the little ball of fuzz.

I'm sorry about your loss.

I am so glad that I am not the only one! I was raised in a family who thought this was the highest form of humor.

And thanks for the bunch of pictures with Abby quoting great and semi-great movies! (click-save, click-save, click-save, click-save, click-save) I do love your sense of humor and quick wit.

I am so sorry about the loss of little Samoa. She sounds like she was so very lucky to have your family to take care of her. I know this happens sometimes, but it doesn't make it any easier to experience. Samoa was able to have a heavenly life with your family even if it was only for two months.

The Mind Boggles: our kitten Samoa

So sorry to hear about little Samoa. She was obviously loved very much in her short life, she was very lucky indeed to be rescued by someone as nice as you. You gave each other the priceless gift of unconditional love.

Know that you have also given your children a great gift by teaching them about respect for animals, the importance of animal rescue, showing them what it is to love and care for a pet, and the value of helping those who cannot help themselves. You sound like an awesome parent. Hopefully one day you and your family can welcome another little furry soul into your lives, I think that would make Samoa proud.

*hugs*

Glad your snuggly angel helped you when you needed her.

Rats hold odd and diverse places in our (human) world - companions, pests, snake food, experimental subjects, etc..sometimes tough to reconcile.

You gave me an excuse to post Ben (new window), my favorite MJ song :)

** New Kitten Question Alert**

So, Mr. Tealeaf and I just acquired a couple of allegedly 7 week old kittens last Monday. They are fluffy and adorable and when Mr. Tealeaf comes home in a few I'll be posting pictures. Their names are Champ, a boy, and Storm, a girl. Our grown up cats don't love them, but don't really go out of their way to slap them around or anything. They seem to like us and their new home well enough.

The problem is that Strom doesn't seem to know how to/want to use the litterbox. We bought a couple of little ones that the kittens can crawl into easily. Champ uses it like a, well, a champ. She's seen him use it on several occasion. We put her into it, and move her front legs to simulate digging. She just hops out as soon as we let go of her. I've caught her pooping on the floor of my bedroom, and plopped her into the sandbox. She did finish pooping there, then hopped out without burying. Mr. Tealeaf just bought a couple more of the little litterboxes to put in my bedroom and by the sliding glass doors in the living room.

I've had cats and kittens all my life, and never had any problems at all litterbox training one. We just plopped them in the sand and they've gone "Hey, this would be a *great* place to do my business."

Mr. Tealeaf just came home, so pictures are soon to follow. Please help with some suggestions!

I could say that "She knew she was loved", and "She had a better life with you than she could have had otherwise", maybe even "She'll be at the Bridge when you get there"....

But about all I can do is look down and nod my head in understanding. Been there, done that.

(5 minutes later)

Still can't think of anything to say.

Hey! Those are my kittehs! Buddy, Eboni and Zak. Zak now lives with my sister (he & Eboni look alike, so don't ask me who is who). They will be 3 soon, most likely on 7/11. (I rescued them 8/11/08, and they were about 4 weeks old, so...)

Congrats on the impending adoption; I know you've waited a long time. Be sure to post photos of your new family member(s) when you can.
