Hobodeluxe: that's just a peek behind the curtain. there's a lot more skeletons in the closet at Newscorp.

My guess is that the reason why Murdoch did this so abruptly is exactly because you are right. Too much light on his sleazy operations is a very dangerous thing for the his empire.

I am certain that News Of The World was an aberration, and its behavior did not reflect any larger policies at News Corps, and that Rupert Murdoch would not tolerate such unethical behavior and punish those responsible, and certainly would not promote the editor of a paper that practiced such unsavory acts to be the CEO of his operations in the UK.

I thought all unsympathetic obituaries had to be cleared by Christopher Hitchens to ensures sufficient bile.

Rest in pieces, useless rag. That being said, anyone calling out the accessories to these crimes...the public - whose lust for every sordid detail of every person in the news, however inconsequential - drives the sales of tabloids like NOTW?

We got the bubble-headed bleach-blonde, comes on at 5,
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye.
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry.

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet.
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry.

You don't really need to find out what's going on,
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone.
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry.

How will single mothers in love with gay men abandon their babies if they can't drape them in the News of the World anymore?

This news has opened my eyes, and I may never sleep again.

Good. Awful rag, typifying all that's wrong with the British press.

That was step 1. Now, how about the rest?

Sounds like the dope dealer's defence. If there's a demand, satisfy it, and damn the torpedoes. There's such a thing as ethics, old chap.

it is can easily be considered the most read "newspaper" in Britain today, with a sickening circulation of nearly 3 million copies per week.

Sure, this paper sucks, but let's not forget who the enablers are.

Personal responsibility trumps enablers. People need to quit blaming anyone but themselves for their actions.

THANKS FOR NOTHING RUPERT.

So what's your game plan, Murdoch? How will you be remembered when your obituary's written in 30 years? What have you given us? Have you made the world a better place?

WHAT'S THE DEPRECIATION SCHEDULE FOR A MURDOCH PAPER?

Your children will open their bejweled fingers, and your empire will collapse. Everything you own is tainted, soaked, stained and saturated: whorehouse sheets. Sure. Someone will buy it, but not for what it's worth. When the kids are reprinting business cards and shifting org chart slots like mahjong tiles, the lawyers will lean in and say, "We have to scrub Murdoch off all of this, and disinfecting is going to be expensive. We want an offset on the purchase price."

WHO'S NEXT ON THE BLOC?

The lizardish blink and chain link drawl,
"You better behave.
Because at my age,
there's no reason to save."

DON'T WORRY, NEWSIES, THERE ARE PLENTY OF JOURNALISM JOBS TO ...

Oh. No they're not. Hope you like writing term papers on Henry V for the lumpen.

LIE IN THE TALL GRASS

So, what then? Do you sulk in your little San Simeons? Do you hyphenate a prize to make the Oxbridge rictuses curdle? The Booker-Murdoch prize. Oh. That sounds nice. Something will come to you. You have years.

AS A MAN ONCE SAID,

Fark Murdoch. Blog.

/recycled from my red light ... this is a good green light modlings

Power, Pop!
Read about the things that happen throughout the world
Don't be believe in everything you see or hear
The neighbours talk day in day out about the goings on
They tell us what they want - they don't give an inch

Look at the pictures taken by the cameras they cannot lie
The truth is in what you see - not what you read
Little men tapping things out - points of view
Remember their views are not the gospel truth

Don't believe it all
Find out for yourself
Check before you spread
News of the world

Never doubt
Never ask
Never moan
Never search
Never find
Never know

Each morning our key to the world comes through the door
More than often its just a comic, not much more
Don't take it too serious - not many do
Read between the lines and you'll find the truth

Read all about it, read all about it - news of the world

Alright. I've spent over a year now without TV. I rarely listen to the radio and use adblock while surfing the web. I don't pay much attention to ads in newspapers or magazines. It has been a conscious effort on my part to 'switch off'.

Do you know how hard these companies bombard you? And let's just say, for the sake of argument, that you are able to ignore it all and stand as a bastion and beacon of personal responsibility. What of your kids? Your significant other? Your friends? Your coworkers? They are getting bombarded and are turning around and reflecting that back at you.

Personal responsibility is great. But the system is now able to target you in so many ways that it is hard to avoid it all. I'm not entirely sure it can be entirely avoided. Peer pressure is huge.

I'm sure another paper will take its place that looks suspiciously similar and is call Totally Not News of the World.

Wonderfully nasty. Just the kind of obituary that dismal rag and its employees / management deserve.

2011-07-07 11:39:12 PM
If I were Rupert Murdoch, I'd say the phone hacking was just done for the lulz; won't help in court but should improve his reputation on FARK no end.

Snapper Carr: tbot: The Sun will take its place, another scat rag.

Yup, the Sun is still there.

And I think Murdoch's quick action in the face of criticism might have more than a passing relation to his attempts to buy BSkyB (new window)

Too little, too late, Murdoch. You went too far, and now the torches & pitchforks are out & heading for you. Throwing this rag under the bus won't save you.

I like the part where he thinks people will go to prison over this.

Murdoch owns the media, and nobody gets elected without the help of the media. Nobody of any consequence will do a day, because the people who have the power to put them there are all terrified of the geriatric motherfarker. Yeah, a few heads might roll. But those truly responsible will never pay their dues.

2011-07-08 01:54:53 AM
Those truly responsible do, however, pay a lot of taxes.

So, after 168 slimy years, News of the World has died, suddenly and unexpectedly. It has not so much suffered from a fall from grace as it suffered from slipping off the toilet seat onto the grimy floor of a public restroom.
