Keep your powder and your socks dry, troops.

I'll be eating dead bovine and thinking how great it is that you are there, instead of me.

Stay strong, and live long.

Yeah, because calling corrupt politicians on their murderous sh*t is as un-American as it gets.

Subby here. Not that I'm trying to impinge on anyone's rights, but is it really that hard to not turn this into a herp-derp threader or baby killer thing? The courage required for standing up in front of a camera and singing for strangers (without alcohol) isn't something all of us have. Can we agree on that, at least, then go back to enjoying a federal holiday?

It all relates, my friend. Our government doesn't like dissent, and will meet it in its own way.

Don't see how the guardsmen "panicked", either.

That song always makes me cry. We were lucky enough to see the original star-spangled banner in DC this March, the one that flew over Baltimore and inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem. It's huge!

nburghmatt: yeah that whole death thing just expires after 40 years or so

OK, listen carefully now. Panicky Guardsmen killing four students on a campus 40 years ago does not magically establish that the US is similar to Nazi Germany (as Rufus Lee King suggested upthread), nor does it invalidate the 4th of July celebration. You shouldn't need a foreigner to point out something so blindingly obvious.

National celebrations are not attempts to whitewash history and prove that your country is perfect; they are the expression of the ideal of what your country should be -- and what, at its best moments, it already is.

Wow, kiddies. You're so hip and edgy. "Didja know the US doesn't have a perfect history?"

Yeah, we know. We're not exactly proud of it. We also know that this nation said "Y'know what? Instead of having a King, let's tell the King, in writing, why we're not gonna have a King." We're far from perfect, but in the long run, we're doing pretty good.

i do not think the US is comparable to Nazi Germany. i'm not sure where you got that. you suggested however that the murders at Kent State have lost relevance over time, and i say that's a load of shiat.

2011-07-04 10:15:16 AM
Rufus Lee King: It all relates, my friend. Our government doesn't like dissent, and will meet it in its own way.

OK, you've dissented on this thread. So what actual danger are you in from the government? Nothing vague, now: I want to hear actual details of the persecution you're going to face because you just stuck it to the Man on Fark.

Don't see how the guardsmen "panicked", either.

They heard, or thought they heard, shots being fired at them before they opened fire. Although neither you nor I were there and really know what happened, we can at least reasonably eliminate the theory that the killings were ordered by the US government, as you've been suggesting -- if there had been a centrally coordinated campaign to massacre students, it would have been far more effective and widespread than Kent State, something more on the order of Tiananmen Square.

Sorry, but as a newly converted Tea Partier, I don't celebrate FEDERAL holidays. Government is too large already and we don't need to continue indoctrinating young, impressionable minds with the fallacy that our excessively large Federal government should be celebrated. Also, it is a waste of taxpayers money to put on public displays of fireworks and all governments (local, state, and federal) should not be sponsoring these events. There are plenty of theme parks and other private companies that put on pyrotechic displays for a small fee. Anyone can go to these displays and watch. Just don't steal from hardworking taxpayers to provide free entertainment - it is not a core government function!

alltandubh Panicky Guardsmen

You keep using that word. One wonders how some unarmed college students half a football field away would cause a bunch of men with automatic weapons to panic. Regardless the Guard officer caught on tape shouting, "Right here! Get Set! Point! Fire!" doesn't sound too panicked.
