China's finance minister may have been forced to step down after it was discovered that he had an affair with a Taiwanese honey-pot spy.

That, I did not know.

If a G string has one bar going up the middle a bar going across the top and a loop on either side, why isn't it called a B string?

/turn it sideways
// off to google and probably find out why

Prank Call of Cthulhu: [desmond.imageshack.us image 500x397]

I wouldn't be so quick about that. Most were in the papers at some point already. But nobody read those papers the first time. Wikileaks, however, gave everyone a reason to go back and have a look at what they've been missing, and there have been plenty of countries that don't like what they see.

Got to remember, there are other countries involved in these leaks. For the US, it's a cacophony of leaks. The non-US countries are mainly interested in what's coming out of their own, a much smaller pool to work with. They're better able to make a story out of each and every one of them.

It is "hard to overestimate the political impact of the uncertainty surrounding
the inevitable succession crisis which will be touched off once King Bhumibol
passes"

That was a really complicated sentence. It frightened me.

Nonetheless, completely accurate. The good king has been king since 1946_, since before Bill Clinton or Dubya were even born. Who knows what will happen when his poodle-loving son and G-string clad wife become the next king and queen.

A cable on Venezuelan arms exports to Russia provides clues on where Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi may be getting his surface-to-air missiles

this is why we er..ahem..NATO is in Lybia..

Ouch:

he cables' assessments of Irish politicians are quite blunt and contrast with the warm sentiments President Barack Obama expressed during his recent visit to the island. One cable says that then incoming Prime Minister Brian Cowen's nickname BIFFO, or "Big, Ignorant farker from Offaly," suits him "especially well."

That's going to take a LOT of fruit baskets to smooth over

Stretching an article across multiple pages is a blatant attempt at driving up ad metrics. Try and be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

How are these statements consistent with one-another? Wikileaks' entire philosophy is to make all possible data public, to hell with the consequences. They (or, rather, he) exists entirely to expose lies -- whether the outcome of those lies is good, bad, or trivial.

Adaro: Still nothing on those swiss banks eh?

You mean the names of the thousands of people in the US who were hiding large amounts of money in Swiss bank accounts, AKA, felony tax evasion, who were let off with administrative fines? Why yes that would be interesting to know. How many of those are congressmen and senators, CEO's of large corporations, and other trusted officials? Rough estimate, there are about 10,000 people that occupy the highest levels of society, CEO, politicians, lobbyists, etc. Number of people using Swiss bank accounts to hide money from the Tax Boards, 2200. Do the math.

I thought Wikileaks whole mission was to expose international government and corporate corruption and make them transparent and accountable to the citizens. What does exposing the fact that someone likes to hang out around their house naked and have parties for their dog have to do with any of that? Like someone said earlier this is an invasion of privacy.

If they're doing it with government/taxpayer resources, it has everything to do with it.

The point isn't the news part, it is the reaction of American diplomats and how they interpret it. Everyone knows the Thai king is old and the successor a loser, but noone in Thailand can say anything (on pain of death) about it, whereas the US diplomats are saying it as it is.

Most of these diplomatic leaks seem to show that our diplomats are doing decent job assessing things, the problem is that when their assessments are made public they don't seem so diplomatic. But that is what diplomacy is -- being friendly despite not necessarily liking someone.

they probably discuss this during their internal debates about what to release and what not to release, especially if they have any journalists involved in those debates.

naked parties have nothing to do with corruption, unless you have a politician whose entire image is based on the idea of putting people in jail for having naked parties. its like the Elliot Spitzer thing - was it a big deal that he purchased the services of prostitutes? not really, vast numbers of politicians do that. the problem was that he had gone on an anti-prostitution crusade as attorney general, and punished a lot of people for doing what he was doing in secret.

in other words, he was the top cop, but he was trying to put himself above the law. in modern, civilized countries, we are supposed to have nations ruled by laws, and not by individuals. thats the whole point of breaking away from the monarchy tradition of government. but when a politician decides to put some people in jail while breaking those laws himself, then people tend to get upset about it. not because of the law broken, but because of the hypocrisy of the person who is supposed to be upholding the principle of blind justice and a government that is not above the people, but equal to them, especially under the blindfolded eyes of lady justice.

Yes, leaked documents shockingly reveal diplomats doing the job that diplomats are supposed to be doing. Incredible.
