The fact that Derek Jeter, having spent most of the season either playing like sh*t or injured, is almost guaranteed to start over Asdrubal Cabrera, who is arguably the best shortstop in baseball this season, is a testament to the dumbassery of the All-Star voters.

Ahuh. I haven't checked in a while, but Princess Mauer Of St. Paul was up there as well. Hopefully people came to their senses.

The All Star Game, like the NFL Pro Bowl, is nothing more than a glorified popularity contest. The teams with the media attention and fan bases are always overrepresented, and players - see Derek Jeter - get in on nothing more than name recognition.

And that is why the MLB, NFL and NBA need to go to an Academy Awards-like format where the players are chosen by other players, coaches, owners, etc. instead of the fans. It keeps Derek Jeter and Allen Iverson from being All-Stars and it keeps Tyler Perry from sweeping the Oscars.

The Bestest: 1B- Adrian Gonzalez

I'd have preferred Paul Konerko, but I can't argue with this selection. For once, the voters did good. Jeter, though? C'mon.

The bulk of the roster is chosen by players and managers. Fans only select the (non-pitching) starters.

/yep, Teixeira snubbed

JETER? Why not just put in Derek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero. They were once good also. I like the fan voting but only if the game doesn't count, since it counts the coaches and the players should make the selections. Fans are idiots.

Teixera? What about Asdrubal Cabrera, or even Jhonny Peralta? They've been lightyears better than Jeter and still got f*cked over. I could see the argument for Gonzales since his batting average is over 100 points higher than Teixera's, but is there any legitimate reason that Cabrera or Peralta shouldn't be starting over Jeter?

Well I assumed he'd be brought in as a reserve, but he should be starting.

Cabrera's going to get in. So he won't start. Shrug. I don't really care if a few guys who shouldn't make the game get in. After all, we still have to see one player from each team. Is Jeter any worse than Randy Winn or Mark Redman?

/Oh, and Cabrera's a beast, but Jose Reyes is the best shortstop in baseball this year. A-Rod said so.

Martin? Really? That counts as a "good year"? Christ, if that's a good year then Carlos Santana should be on the All-Star reserves ahead of Martin.

All the more reason to relax. This is Cabrera's first selection and Jeter is nearing the end of his career. He'll start if not next year, the year after.

Wow, Jeter to the AS game this year, NYY fans are sick in the head. I guess they have more 12 year-olds than most markets have adult citizens though, so it's not surprising.

Yes, there are probably six shortstops who performed better than Jeter this year, but this is not the "All-Stat" team. It's supposed to be a popularity contest, All STARS. . If you want the best players at each position in the game, eliminate fan ballots and let a spreadsheet decide who goes.

/Came to terms with the format when Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken Jr, et al were inked in annually while better-performing west-coasters were summarily ignored.

Why is it so hard to understand why -THE- single most popular player in all of MLB would be voted in by fans?

Agreed. Bochy could have stacked the deck with Giants, but there's not a one of his four selections I would question.

Am surprised that Ichiro and Pujols missed the cut.

Will vote for Ethier as last man in.

AL OPS for 1B:
Cabrera- 1.025
Gonzalez- 1.000
Konerko- .954
Texeira- .892

So if snubbed means not going ahead of two guys who are playing much better than him, yes he was snubbed, Homer.

Don't worry Jeter still got there just because he was a Yankee. Tony Lazzeri would have been a better choice for Yankee SS but he wanted to stay buried with his family.

Reds fans wanted Cueto before Bruce; OF must be very shallow in the NL this year (and I'm a Reds fan). AL is just sand-bagging for the Home Run contest, where Ortiz can pick Tex and Konerko as his teammates even tho they're not on the AS team.

Would like to see Helton get a vote-in, he won't make it to many more of these.

Teixeira's totally the best 1b. I mean, he's even hitting 244! And only 16 of his 25 home runs are at home, so it's not like he's leading baseball in homers because he plays in a tiny-ass park.

/All-star? Sure. Starter? Not quite.

Teixeira doesn't hit squeakers. Almost all of his homers are no-doubters; he's kinda an all-or-nothing type hitter (which is why his OPS is comparatively low-ish), so park really isn't much of a factor with him. I agree there's no question Gonzalez is the legitimate 1B starter, fan vote or not.
