hillary: My first reaction -- anyone with "God is my co-pilot," "One day at a time," "Baby on board," etc., should be just shot on sight.

You can just see what will happen, though -- citations given for unwanted speech only to be thrown out in court, but the intimidation factor is that citations are given.

I'm OK with this if one thing is added -- the officer gets fined $50 for each citation that he writes that is thrown out of circuit or appellate court.

Actually, I give three years before the whole law is thrown out, either in appeals or supreme courts.

$50? How about a 3 week suspension for each. Maybe coupled with a 3 strikes and you're out clause.

Yeah, there's a reason I don't have a bumper sticker. Some cop will use this against a Democratic one and make up an offensive one.

around here an Obama sticker or sign guarantees a car getting keyed in a parking lot or if it's a sign in the yard you'll get a ball bat to the mailbox.

free speech for some. tiny American flags for others.

"On two different instances they had their children in the car with them and they pulled up on a vehicle that had an obscene bumper sticker,"

TWO whole instances?

I agree with the intent of it, but it will be abused and become a revenue generator for the city. That is until it gets smacked down for being 1st amendment violation.

I love how their example is the "coexist" sticker. I guess that one is "obscene" to Evangelicals.

Well anyway, I assume subby was making some sort of joke but the article doesn't mention anything about Obama/Biden stickers. Just some douchebag in the comments section said something douchey about it. As douchebags often do.

Having met quite a few of them, yes it is. Those people are Prosperity Gospel all the way.

Let me guess, the same super intelligent people who are for this law preach for less government intrusion.

As well, isnt TN the same state that searches everybody without a warrant, and gets to keep your cash even if you are doing nothing wrong??

All bumper stickers offend me. They hurt a car's resale value.

Let me be a little more clearer. I am talking about real obscene stuff. Example (new window)
I am not a Christan, but stuff like that is over the line on a car bumper sticker.
Calvin pissing on a car logo, not so much.

Yeah, that and "Stoner Creek Elementary School" and "Read A Book."
Seriously TN? Reading and going to school are offensive? WTF?

Really, how many people are driving around Tenn. with bumper stickers on their cars saying "fark you! You drive like a coont!"

Usually you can find bumper stickers like that in Portland.
This is just another reason to profile people and pull them over.

2011-07-03 09:53:57 AM
I've never seen a bumper sticker that I would consider obscene. Although the sight of one of those old W. '04 bumper stickers will drastically lower my option of the car's owner.

Though speaking of '04, I remember a few people I knew that would not attach a Kerry/Edwards sticker to their car, because they feared it would hurt their employment. So they put it in their back window only on weekends, or something like that.

Yep, anyone dumb enough to put a bumper sticker on their car needs a good, swift crack over the head with a stick.

I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I got my plastic Jesus
Sitting on the dashboard of my car
Hit a tree, hit a truck
Plastic Jesus don't give a f**k
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

Jeeeeesus, plastic Jeeeeesus
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

Well plastic Jesus, you gotta go
Cuz yer magnet f**ked my radio
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

My magnet came off of mine. So I just nailed his feet to my dash

Maybe TN has discovered a simple answer to our budget crisis. The feds should do the same thing, but on the internet. Every time someone posts something offensive, they should be able to track their IP and fine them.

What I just said above should be good for $20 I would think.

This.

Also, the article says a DEMOCRATIC rep wanted to increase fines. This is more of an obscenity/free speech issue that is a right v left issue.

2011-07-03 10:34:37 AM
Why are we still recycling this issue?

"When you get into crossing the line so to speak you do not have a right to impose your speech on other people," he said.

Where is the farking line, Rep. Moore? Where? We've been down this road 4,000 times already, and ignorant legislators appear to be ignorant of this. This is absolutely a first amendment issue.

as a kid i often wondered what it would be like to ride down the road in a big ass truck with the word
"fark" (fark editor in effect) on both sides and the back. sure even then i knew it would get some dirty looks and the asshole brand, but it might just be worth it.

on that note a friend had a bumper sticker that had a cartoon man force feeding a pig a donut. the caption read. "have another donut, officer." never got pulled over or had problems.

TFA: In his opinion, Rep. Moore said the law does not violate any constitutional protections, including freedom of speech.

"When you get into crossing the line so to speak you do not have a right to impose your speech on other people," he said.

Rep. Moore on freedom of speech: as long as you don't actually say anything in public, freedom of speech is fine.

Didn't you read the article? The constitution doesn't apply in the passing lane. Didn't you read it? That's TOTALLY in there. Right next to the original wording of the patriot act and the clause establishing the TSA

Reminds me of a running cadence I know

Cruisin' in my '54 Ford
Plastic Jesus on the dashboard

He don't slip, he don't slide
Cause his feet are magnetized

Plastic Jesus he's real cool
He walked across my swimming pool

Plastic Jesus he's real fine
Turned my Kool-Ade into wine

But Plastic Jesus has got to go
He keeps farking with my radio

In Indianapolis, if you take a ticket to court and get the thing dismissed, YOU still have to pay over $1000 in court costs. How this is constitutional is beyond me - choose to defend yourself against a bogus charge by the state and wind up paying more than the fine?

2011-07-03 10:46:05 AM
all my bumper stickers are originals designed by me printed out by me (it helps to have connections in the vinyl industry).

one says the word "loser". that's about as offensive as it gets.

this is a dumb measure, and it seems it's more about the porn on the screens in cars vs the bumper stickers.

Now on the subject of bumper stickers:

Fark those stupid family ones. the ones that have mommy, daddy, two kids, a dog, and a fish.
fark you.

the more people on the back of your car, the shiattier a driver you are.

2011-07-03 10:46:58 AM
My in-laws are Armenian. Armenians don't have their own swear words (or so I've been told), so they borrow them from the Turks. My father-in-law got vanity plates that said 'SIK DIR," Turkish for "fark you." He told the Registry it stood for Scientists In Knowledge Deal In Research and drove around very happily for about three years until they got a phone call from the RMV: a Turk had seen their license plate and complained. My mother-in-law, who answered the phone, said something like "My goodness! I had no idea it meant that! We'll take them off right away!" A couple of years later I had the opportunity to check it out for myself. My wife and I were stuck in a traffic jam which turned out to be caused by some jerk who had angle parked in a parallel parking space, cutting off one lane of traffic. He was standing right there. leaning on the car and chatting, and he looked Middle Eastern so as we drove by I stuck my head out the window and shouted "Sik dir, eshek!" ("eshek" meaning "asshole".) I was rewarded with a classic double take from the offending party. He knew exactly what I had said.

Why would they even think about making a law that so blatantly violates the first amendment?

Does Virginia still have a similar law on the books? I thought they had passed a bumper sticker law in the early 90's.

I have my "family outline" in Dead dancing bears of different sizes...right next to my NRA sticker. I figured I'd cover all my bases.
