Can we, perhaps, amend the headline to say (Southside Chicago)? A witty headline might as well do some good ...

I get it. It's a superb headline. But for everyone who gets that, 95% won't. (Maybe not 95% ... it's fark on a summer holiday weekend afternoon. I'm thinking of a general population.) Yep. It's a well-tuned headline.

No shiat, I'm not a moron. I can tell that it is degrees lat/long. Without those units, they are just numbers.

If you have the wherewithal to paste them into Google Maps, you will see what the numbers mean.

If you just want to complain, enjoy!

Haha! HILARIOUS! Only to idiots on Fark.
You're supposed to say "Aisle seat please!!" because that makes it xtra funneee

The complainers are correct. Not only are the units not labeled, but being lat/long, they also should have their map datum listed. WGS84? Probably, but not guaranteed. Those numbers, in a different datum, could lead you somewhere that you might not expect. Might not be far away, and in this situation, probably wouldn't matter. If you were trying to find your way to the 'x' marking the spot though, you need the map datum.

\Driving off a cliff now as we speak.

The coordinates take you to the corner of Oak and Burnett in Cincinnati, yeah Oak and Burnett. Definitely KMart.

Man, I came here to complain about the lack of a map datum thinking I was the only one geeky enough to point out that it could be miles away if they were in WGS 72 and you calculated the location using WGS 84. Congrats sir, on being just as geeky as I am

Subby.

As a data point on the autistic spectrum myself, what you're looking for is Asperger's syndrome.

Hope that clears that up.

If they missed him with autism, maybe they can use autism to find him.

Is it sad that I paused when seeing those lat/long coordinates and thought I recognized as a local Chicago area? I stare at coordinates all day long and am starting to recognize smaller cities off coordinates. Somebody shoot me

2011-07-02 10:59:15 PM

This.

/Not to mention that if an Aspie kid vanishes, that's actually a problem, because face blindness can apply to landscapes and houses

You suck at geography. I didn't need to look at the map to know it was at least close to Chicago.

jjorsett: Police locate missing S. Side teen with autism

So someone figured out how autism can be used to locate people! Bravo.

By the way, you WGS84 fans don't know a superior datum when you see it. NAD27 kicks WGS84's ass.

NAD83 is a bit better, but WGS84 works more or less worldwide, and isn't so continent-specific.

Hyperlexia is the king of ASD. Also known as `hyper male brain type`. Off the scale masculine.

No girls allowed in the smart, hyperlexic ASD. Not for you. You get `sitting in a corner not talking`. We get precocious ability with words and number, no senility, lowered social awareness, slight face blindness and above average intelligence. WINNING!

2011-07-03 08:50:25 AM
So, what did they find?
An empty packet of crisps, lol?

I don't suck at geography. My suggestion is for those who *do* suck at geography. But if you consider knowing lat/long a crucial life skill, then you can tell me the exact dimensions of the little box you decide not to think outside of.

I'm sorry if you think most people don't know how to read a farking map...

It kinda gives it away when the chicago tribune is the link. And Chicago isn't exactly 16.775833, -3.009444.
