bill37663: Long time liberal democrat who thinks Gingrich is lower than snake shiat,,, but seriously, who gives a rat's ass?

The Republicans are realizing that Gingrich can't cover his ass enough to bring up class warfare.

It's on everybody's lips, and possibly one of the greatest mistakes Fox News has ever made. People are angry and are wondering what went wrong with the social contract, and it's pissing people off. Wage stagnation will do that. So when you have Republicans biatching and whining about the suddenly-important deficit and pushing austerity measures while having a half million dollar account at Tiffany's, you open up a very big hole to destroy a campaign.

The Republicans are not confident at all right now. Obama has proved to be an apt pupil, and it won't take much to reduce the Republican Party to regional status. And while they're still pulling a lot of media tricks to give the illusion of competence, you can tell that Newt still doesn't get it. We're at the 'let them eat cake' part of the Republican pomposity, and it will not do them any favors. Keep in mind that the chosen favorite here noted that 'he was unemployed too.' The Republicans are completely out of touch, and a lot of their staffers are realizing that it's going to be a fatal flaw.

In defense of republicans in general (damned rare for me!), I'm gonna go out on a limb and say ALL politicians are out of touch. We've cultivated a political system here where they only way you can win an election is if you're already filthy rich. No plumber or cubicle monkey is going to become president anytime soon. Won't happen. The system will not permit it.

Why is everyone saying he "bought" the stuff from Tiffany's? Until he pays off his debt to the company, he just borrowed it.

You are being stupidly confident.

Obama will win because I've seen his ground game in action and it was effing EFFECTIVE. He is - more than likely - going to break it out again for 2012 and the saavier Democrats will ride the coattails. Probably the same amount as in 08 - those who finally 'get it' and aren't pussies about it* will balance out with those who lose because the fervor behind electing him will be more muted this time around.. All the people who pollers usually throw in the 'not likely to vote' category will come out again.

But do not - DO NOT - understimate the idea in many, many Americans' minds that they could be rich soon (Alger FTW) and that those who did find 'the American Dream' shouldn't be penalized because that might be them someday.

Old-school fiscal conservatives - who I do at least respect and agree to disagree with - are marginal these days, with so many flipping to Obama in 08.

* the State influence in the election I worked with - in a traditionally Republican district, but that had *almost* gone Dem in 06 - said that we shouldn't align with Obama because it would 'scare off' the moderates who might switch to my candidate if we completely coordinated with his campaign. That was stupid, and by the time I got to correct it it was a bit too late and there was a significant undervote.

Newt can spend his money however he wants. But overtly flashing his opulence doesn't seem to be a winning strategy in the current economic climate.

I understand that Americans tend to worship the wealthy, but there's still such a thing as going too far if you're running for public office.

Actually, the only issue for me is the hold his wife seems to have over him. I want my politician to be independent and a dominant personality. In his case, his wife is really, really money-oriented and vain and seems to get her way with Newt. Sorry but any guy that spends like that on his wife is not leader material.

The man likes bling. Is that so wrong?

The man married an owl who demands jewelry. Apparently, there is some merit to the notion of Karma.

Well, unlike Obama, at least Newt is spending HIS OWN MONEY, and not the taxpayers money.

Obama is spending the taxpayer's money on jewelry? Oh, nm, you're just another neocon troll. My bad. 1/10

This IS a non-story, basically a scurrilous attack without much political merit.

My sympathy for any Republicans taking this kind of crap is limited, however; they've certainly flung enough of it themselves.

The story is a follow-up, an inside baseball-explanation of "why Newt's entire staff quit." It's not news as a stand-alone, but the 15 people who give a crap about Newt's pretend candidacy might have some interest (He's just using campaign contributions to market his books and speeches, not really running). Doubt it even ran in the paper edition.

TXEric: Probably showing my age too much here, but I gotta admit, whenever I hear references to this song, I first and foremost think of Tommy James and the Shondells, not Tiffany.

However, her Playboy spread was most likely MUCH more enjoyable that TJ&S could ever have pulled off...

/Lawn, get off it, etc...

Holy shiat you're old. I thought I was a senior citizen around here!

Just kidding gramps. I thought the same thing.

Us old Farkers have got to stand together.

He's going to be our next President; definitely out-classes Fartbamo by a long shot.

What a disguting ass you must be.

I am not voting for the man -ever BUT it is not like he:

1. Not using tax payer money.

2. Not doing something illegal (in this instance)

3. Telling the rest of us we must reduce our jewelry purchases for some poltically correct or junk scientific reason while he continues to buy large amounts jewelry-analogy Al Gore

Ehh

lennavan: So Newt legally obtained his money and is spending it in a legal manner as he sees fit. I continue to miss how this story has any relevance to anything whatsoever. NEWT BUYS EXPENSIVE JEWELERY A LOT ZOHMYGOSH.

The Gingriches were generous to staff in other ways, typically contributing up to 20 percent of each staffer's salary to their pension funds and giving a minimum year-end bonus of 20 percent of base salary - often much more.

"The Gingriches have always been extremely generous with their staff, from bonuses and pension fund contributions to the Christmas gifts in Tiffany boxes," said former campaign spokesman Rick Tyler. "I think those gifts were always appreciated."

Aaannnnnd farkyouverymuch for making me like Newt. Seems like a standup kinda boss.

The extravagant appearance of the purchases also generated concern among employees in 2008 when some Gingrich companies encountered financial difficulties. Over the next two years, bonuses and pension contributions were reduced or eliminated. Even though the Gingriches were using their personal funds for the Tiffany items, the disparity made some employees uncomfortable.

Aaaannnnnd it seems he had a bunch of ungrateful douchebags for employees who felt entitled to those benefits and bonuses.

Let's see in order: this, THIS, and this. Although, Tiffany hasn't really made anything worth buying in quite some time......
