Close! It's the day a hockey fan had chili cheese fries, then got so drunk he couldn't remember what was supposed to go on top of the fries. So he dug out leftovers, heated them up, and was exiled from civilization for his efforts.

He fled to the land we now know as Canada, and founded the nation upon the principles of freedom and liberty and hockey.

You do know, though, that hardly anyone in the US outside of border states know who they are, right? Maybe that's changed. They deserve a better rep here far more than some of the other stuff you've exported to us (but you already covered that list pretty well).

To be honest, the US Founding Fathers would be appalled at the idea, I think. They were rather against the notion of symbols used that way. The whole "pledge" thing was an outcome of WWI (iirc) but really only gained traction during the McCarthy Era, when they added "under God" to the Pledge, "In God We Trust" to the money, and everyone went to church every Sunday morning so their neighbors wouldn't turn them in as godless heathen pinko Commies.

I just ignore the pledge, except for when I rail against it as a brainwashing tool.

Mike (telling a joke): ...and the drunk guy says, "I can't help being an idiot, I'm Canadian!"
Crow (Laughs): You're right, they're so pathetic, Mike!

(Whistle blows, Tom comes in wearing Mountie uniform)

Tom: Enough! There's been too much Canada-bashing for far too long! I say: no more!
Mike: Don't you mean: "No more, eh"?
Crow (Laughs): Good one, man! They are SO stupid!
Tom: Stop it now! Instead, let us offer our Northern brothers and sisters this song of tribute!

(Music starts)

(Singing)
Oh, I wish I was back in old Canada,
A land which I never shall lampoon!
How I pine for the ice covering Lake Manitoba,
And the beauty that is Saskatoon!

Mike (spoken): I got one.

(Singing)
Oh, I wish I was stuck in the hills of Alberta,
Drinking beer with some big dumb guy trapping fur!

Tom (spoken): Hey!

Mike (singing):
As he scraped and chiseled all the moose dung off his boots,
I would learn that he's the Prime Minister!

Tom (spoken): Oh, stop that!

Crow (singing):
Oh, I wish I was in the land gave us Peter Jennings,
Alanis Morissette, Mike Myers, too!

Tom (spoken): Yeah!

Crow (singing):
No, I take that back, I wouldn't go there even if you paid me,
Oh, Canada, you are a place I must eschew!

Tom (spoken): Now, this is NOT in the spirit I intended!
Mike: Oh, come on, give in! I mean, after all, they gave us Ed the Sock and Rush!
Crow: Yeah, what are you defending? They're such feebs!
Tom: Okay, I'll try!
Mike: All right! Good man!
Tom (singing):
Oh, I wish I was blowing up Prince Edward Island,
And going on to bomb Ontario!
The destruction of Canada and all of its culture,
Is by far my fav-o-rite scenario!

Mike (spoken): Okay, that's a little strong...
Tom (interrupting, spoken): No, no, you were right, Mike, this is much more fun!

(Singing)

Just where the hell does Canada get off sharing a border
With countries far superior to it?

Crow (spoken): Yikes!

Tom (singing):
Why, you lousy, stinking, francophonic, bacon-loving bastards,
Your country's just a giant piece of sh...(Mike leaps on Tom and covers his mouth with his hand, while he and Crow shout "Hey! Whoa! Whoa!")

Mike (spoken): I think that's enough. I think we've... Cambot, (Music stops) okay, thanks. All right.
Tom (sobbing): I'm sorry! I have no sense of proportion! I'm a disgrace to my uniform!
Mike: No, no, that's okay, calm down. Mustn't hate! Mustn't hate!
Crow: At least so overtly.
Mike: Exactly, right. Must disguise our hate, just a little. (Commercial sign light goes on) Okay, we'll be right back. (To Tom) It's okay, now, Dudley.
Tom (still sobbing): Pardonez moi! Pardonez moi!

That Canada still pledges allegiance to the Queen. Not sovereign.

To be honest, the US Founding Fathers would be appalled at the idea, I think. They were rather against the notion of symbols used that way. The whole "pledge" thing was an outcome of WWI (iirc)

A bit earlier. Bellamy wrote it in 1892, officially for the 400th anniversary of Columbus Day (unofficially to sell magazine subscriptions).

The Pledge was supposed to instill loyalty and patriotism in Americans in the face of potential "subversion" from late 19th century immigrants.

We've a representative democracy without having a war, unlike the USA who achieved a representative democracy through war.

Ya sure, Canada Day isn't as cool as Independence Day 'cause there wasn't any blood-spilled.

So for those of us paying attention,

1. We're an independent democracy
2. We've achieved that through peaceful means
3. We've retained ties and good relations with those across the pond

It's not that we still pledge allegiance to the Queen, it's that we're still a part of the commonwealth, for the common good.

Completely inline with the principles that our confederation hoped to embody; peace, order and good government.

Now fark off and go blow up some shiny, loud fireworks and fill your face with fatty hot-dogs lest you have to think critically for a moment. Bunch of idiot Yankees who scream about the Queen's oppressive ways, ignorant to that fact that the commonwealth has no idea what you're talking about.

On the First Day canadian god created snow; and canadian god saw that it was good.

On the Second Day canadian god created bears and all the other furry varmits. And canadian god saw that it was good.

On the Third Day canadian god created man; but something was missing. So canadian god took the man's hokey stick an broke it in half; and from the second half he created woman.

From that day on; hokey sticks could only be as long as the one that canadian god had broken.
