Tradition!

Guidance Counselors follow college rankings.... hmm, I remember that scene in Clerks....

This one is also funny (about Northwestern):
But the Illinois school, whichwas ranked No. 1 in Princeton Review's "The Best Overall Academic Experience" category in 2002,plummeted to No. 17 on the list in 2003.

"I was shocked at the drop," said Reaves, who comes from Jackson, Tenn. "How can a school change so dramatically in one year?"

Bribe wasn't big enough.

The point of college was to drink as much a possible and hook up with random girls. Good times.

2003-08-29 11:38:09 AM
"Anda week afterPrinceton Review released its best college lists last year, the rankings were the fourth most searched topic on Google.com, according to Jeanne Krier, publicist forPrinceton Review Books."

The first? Sex.

Next year? +Britney +kissing +Madonna +VMA

In other news, college starts for me on Tuesday. I can't wait.

Love smoking Cuban Cigars and living in Canada means I get them anytime I want. Or maybe I feel like smoking a blunt walking down the street on a sunny day! Another reason to love Kansas City!!

I think the college rankings are picked in the same manner as the AskMen Top 99 garbage. Random number generator.

2003-08-29 11:58:54 AM
College rankings are complete and utter horseshiat. I go to Johns Hopkins, and you know, we're a pretty big school, and everyone that goes here KNOWS we're a big school. But you got these whining little farktards who always have to biatch about their college ratings going up or down. fark those idiots. Like college rankings even matter. Dumbasses.

2003-08-29 12:00:42 PM
I think the best judge of how good a college is is how much they charge in tuition. If they charge a lot, it must be good. And if the graduates go on to make a lot of money, then you KNOW its good.

Simple, really. What other criteria really matter? Intelligence? Ethics? Bah. Liberalspeak.

Bump, Memphis State alumni? I graduated from there after they changed it to U of Memphis. You look familiar. Did you go to Memphis Prep for high school?

2003-08-29 12:01:01 PM
You buy your way to the top in the Princeton review, and other assorted lists. Northwestern didn't pay the bribe money this year apparently.

2003-08-29 12:01:55 PM
Wow. So Princeton Review ranked Princeton number one, huh? The hell you say.

2003-08-29 12:02:59 PM
I could have gone to Joe Blow's University of Underwater Basketweaving, and people would still probably hire me.

Every employer I've had looks for experience, not education. At least I had a scholarship, so it didn't cost me much, except about $4000 in books over the 6 years.

2003-08-29 12:03:33 PM
"If you take the Ivy League schools and they're not somewhere in the top group in the country, there might be some problem with the criterion," Stetson said.

Well it looks like somebody's wearing their snob pants today.

/smaller school = better education

2003-08-29 12:03:41 PM
Princeton Press is in no way related to Princeton University. They're just in the same town.

2003-08-29 12:03:59 PM
I question college rankings too; Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times is always full of shiat

2003-08-29 12:04:32 PM
Back when I was looking, I perused something called the "Insider's Guide..." It was less than objective or accurate, but amusing nonetheless.

Talk to alums, recent grads, visit, talk to faculty, and/or do a "stay over" program.

I was a volunteer recruiter for Colgate for some time. I would get a much better feeling about a kid from the questions they asked of me than from my questions of them.

2003-08-29 12:06:22 PM
Princeton can suck a hairy fat one. They're not as good as us.

2003-08-29 12:06:44 PM
University of Miami Hurricanes #1!

No question there!

Go Canes!

Football is all that matters when selecting a college.

Ohio State got a real gift last year. This years is payback time.

Son of Thunder: smaller school = better education

Amen, brother. Colgate had an 11-1 student/prof ratio. My upper level seminars may have had 8 people. It's not a lecture, it's a dialog. It's also fairly evident if you don't do the coursework.

*sniff* missing alma mater

2003-08-29 12:08:05 PM
And it's not a "dialog" but a "dialogue".

Colgate alums, huh? Did you guys pre-date Turning Stone or did you spend many a late night there?

what no mention of Clown College???? bastards

I work for an academic department at a major West Coast public university (as a jumped-up office monkey) and our current chair is obsessed with raising our department's and School's rankings in USNWR. He looked into exactly how they come up with these rankings. Several factors are involved, but one of the ones that is given the biggest weight is a survey that's sent out to School Deans and Department Chairs across the nation, asking them for their "impressions" of various schools and departments and asking them to rank the list. Of course, these are ridiculously busy people, so they just do it in a very offhand, unconsidered manner, and millions of students are affected, perhaps negatively, as a result.

Gah.

/fed up with state U, getting my MA at a smallish private school...

Elwood: I graduated in '92. The casino thing was just getting started. I never went, myself. Some of my fraternity brothers road tripped, though, if memory serves.

How did Duke rank?

2003-08-29 12:11:06 PM
I got rather lucky; GT doesn't have the same aura as Yale or Georgetown, however, I've learned that it has a really good rep in my program.

Ahhhh...TS....such a good time....too bad you have to get loaded before you go in.

William_Jefferson_Clinton

It's all about reputation. I went Ivy League, no matter how good a school like U. Washington @ St. Louis or U. Chicago is in the rankings it will never have the aura and thus cred of an Ivy League school (except Brown...Brown sucks).

It's Washington University, in St. Louis. Get it right next time.

Little pissed about the #11 ranking, are we?

Duke ranks #5 in U.S. News.

Ok, that's a big myth. Class size has nothing to do with the size of the student body. Class size is determined by the level of the class. 100 to 200 level classes tend to be lectures (of course not all are - I've taken classes in this range with a class size of 15-35 people). By the time you get up to 400 level classes, the class size is under ten. Here at Cornell University, I've taken 300 and 400 level classes with 8 and 6 people in them including me.

The major advantage of a big university is that they have a lot of money. The best minds go to the highest bidders. When trying to get a job after college, having had a professor that is number one in his field helps. Also, while the rules of physics are the same at all colleges, only big schools can bid on things like NASA projects and give students the opportunities to work on missions to Mars.

Christ, celts, get over it! And if you can't, just do what I do with the Browns' 1980s AFC Championship appearances. I watch 'em every time they're on and hope that this time, things will turn out different.
Goddammit, they never do.
I went to a state school in the middle of a cornfield. fark Princeton rankings. If you're really looking for an education, you can find it anywhere, even the Rocco Columbu School of Typewriter Maintenance.

2003-08-29 12:16:19 PM
I wonder how long it will be before some Aggie comes in here trying to convince everyone that Texas A&M is the best school.

2003-08-29 12:16:31 PM
ok i don't get this at all. I went to Miami (OH). everyone goes "oohhhh great school" lots of respect for the undergrad degree. but they are nowhere to be found on us new's site, and the colleges in ohio that were listed sucked (in ohio the top schools are case western OSU and Miami). i am getting my masters at Ashland which is a tier 2 school. no one gives a damn about ashland. they are just the closest. am i missing something?

2003-08-29 12:16:40 PM

"I wonder what the point of even going to college was. Granted, it was only Memphis State University, but not once has anyone asked to see the friggin thing. Not once. From this perspective I can see I would've been better off using the time and money to travel and otherwise educate and expose myself to things outside the classroom "

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

Oh brother...celts is back.

Jeez! This is going to be pissing contest between Ivy League students/grads and non-Ivy League students/grads.

...Oh wait, this is Fark. Never mind. Have another beer. Go State!

2003-08-29 12:18:35 PM
People, people, people. A college education is completely what you decide to make of it. Whether it's a big school or a small one, you play your cards right and you'll come out "Pimp of the Year".

/heed my words

wow
2003-08-29 12:18:36 PM
can anyone find a link to a ranking of the most expensive colleges?

Colgate eh? Did you ever visit Aquafresh State? hahah, eh:(

2003-08-29 12:22:27 PM
Yeah these reviews are a fallacy. My college, Clemson, was ranked #1 in partying.. But thats bullshiat, cause i know schools like Michigan, any Florida or Cali college partied harder than us. Once your school gets recognition as a party school, the cops and admins crack down on campus policies.. blah.

2003-08-29 12:24:03 PM
The rankings aren't that important. I'd say a better way to do it would be to have five or six "tiers" that schools belong to.

I attended a very good school....but it was hardly Ivy League. At the same time I had friends that went to state schools and may be the dumbest college graduates ever produced.

Employers know how good (or bad) your schools reputation is. I don't know why someone would care a bout a six or seven slot drop....it doesn't change the perception of the value of your education.

2003-08-29 12:25:11 PM
Hey Wop?

Did you see the game and really thought the flag was thrown properly?

I did not say anything except that they got ripped off! They should have played better and not gone into overtime. But they did and they were beaten. The call hurt.

That is why they will be back in a big way!

Ivy School women all hide behind sweaters and were glasses!

No sweaters at Miami! Too hot! Just like the women!

Besides liberals go to Ivy League Schools! Who would want that?

2003-08-29 12:25:35 PM
Every employer I've had looks for experience, not education.

Where do you live? Here, four year degree is listed for everything, including flipping burgers. And, don't forget to ALSO have 3 years experience flipping those burgers. All for the fantastic salary of $18,000 a year!

/me not bitter, no, no, just plotting my revenge
