I expected it to be about as effective as the national marijuana ban.

People should be allowed to smoke wherever, whenever, and whatever they want to. It is their body, their health, their decision. What we don't need is more government involvement telling us where and when we can light up. That doesn't help anyone. It punishes the people who enjoy smoking and it doesn't do a thing for people who don't smoke because they were never suffering anyway -- they aren't the ones smoking.

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there Bob. I really like being able to go out and have a few drinks with friends without coming home smelling like an ashtray.

Cigarette smoke smells like shiat, and IMHO, anyone who still smokes has a personality disorder.

Pretty much. There's no redeeming quality to habitual cigarette smoking. It doesn't even make you look cool.

"The new smoking law is an absolute joke," said Ida Sanoff, 59 years old, who lives in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and enjoys spending time at the ocean. "I have asthma and there are days when I've had to move my chair three times because people, sometimes in groups, sat down near me and started smoking like chimneys."

She sounds like a lot of fun to be around, I bet her family treasures her.

From TFA: City officials say they always planned lax enforcement of the anti-smoking ban in the early days. They say their focus now is on getting the word out, not on writing tickets.

Seems plausible.

The police are being nice about it for now. I think it will be one of those "you can do it if you aren't a dick" laws that get spotty enforcement.

It's crazy to me how many NY/NJ people still smoke. I mean, I'm from the white trash capital of the world, and even we don't have that many smokers down here. In fact, most of our smokers seem to be NY transplants.

When we passed this law in Nebraska. Its about MCMXCIX KM west of New York.

We were informed to call the police.

I'm not sure if you meant actually going into a club, bar or restaurant and having a few drinks because aren't all restaurants, etc. smoke free now?

From what I understood, this new ban was for smoking in outdoor areas.

Banning outdoor smoking in a place as generally filthy as NYC is no different than forcing New Yorkers to wear deodorant. The place will still stink.

Want to do your lungs a favor? Get the hell out of NYC or any other large city. The air quality there is far worse for you than smoking.

If a person wants to engage in an activity, it should be on them to make special arrangements. I don't want to partake in a disgusting habit that smells like crap and gives me a headache. If you want to look like a douchebag with an adult pacifier, you should have to make special arrangements to do so.

I enjoy one of these once in awhile, but there are special places you can smoke them, special, dark secret places, usually off the beaten path, and they are dark so you can hide your shame but enjoy the smoke. Think of when people had to worship in secret and you'll get the idea of what kind of wonderful places these are.

There needs to be a carrot-and-stick approach for it to work.

People are addicted, so they can't just stop. Encourage e-cigarettes as an alternative, which are much less noxious for the people around the smoker.

Socially, it's the difference between walking through town with a blaring loudspeaker (which is what traditional cigarette smoking is), and walking through town wearing headphones.

Is that even possible outside of a psychosomatic reaction? seems if you were outside at a beach you'd need more than a few cigs worth of smoke to impact your breathing.

YOU are taking away from the choices available to non-smokers. You can still choose to go out if a state doesn't allow smoking; you just have to step outside before you light up (not a big burden at all). But non-smokers are the ones who have to pay instead? Uh, okay. How fair.

I can't tell if this is trolling or not, but I know this is how many people view other people who don't smoke or drink (I only bring up drinking, because I just can't and neither should my fiancee).

Why the hell can't people just have fun without cigarettes or booze? I really do hate that kind of "end-all" attitude about it.

Don't like a bar that allows smoking? Open one that does not - the choice I am referring to is for the business owner and patrons both.

Smoking and non-smoking bars can both exist, you can have a choice - but you don't want others to have choices?
