What? No Operation Iraqi Liberation, the name so stupid they had to immediately change it to Operation Iraqi Freedom?

I've always thought that secret government projects should be given ridiculous names. Trying to build a bomb that can wipe out half a continent? Project Fluffy Bunny it is. A mission to take out the head of Al Qaeda? Operation Cow Patty will never show up in the papers.

Only things like getting paperclips from storage should be given names like Operation Divine Explosive Hurricane-Tornado-Earthquake or Mission: Studly Manbeef.

I've always preferred the code names that don't actually hint at the farking mission, so that didn't bother me. There's one on the list called Operation Chattanooga Choo Choo. To bomb German railways.

It's late I guess...

On a side note, here's Cracked's take on poorly named military operations (new window)...

Operation Grizzly Forced Entry is is a far worse name than any of those listed by truTV...

Operation Dragoon was originally named Operation Anvil, Which was a fitting name because it was the anvil Operation Overlord was to hammer on, but they changed it as to not hint their intentions. Chattanooga Choo Choo was a pretty bad name too.

It'd be cool if they were playfighting and pulling each others clothes off. Pretty sure I don't need to see mostly naked chicks beat the crap out of each other. Even if it were over me. There's plenty to go around.

A company I worked for required all internal code names to be randomly generated by the legal department's computers. Computers and lawyers made sure the name was meaningless, irrelevant, and inoffensive.

Nimrod was a great hunter in the Old Testament (new window). I think it only has a "dumbass" connotation in English, maybe only US English? I wonder when that started.

They never did, and Operation Hot Mother was underway.

I read it was the Puritans in England who demonized him, interpreting his hunting as the sin that offended God, or something like that.

If anyone has the time, read up on Operation Mincemeat (British), and the message that was passed to Churchill when it was complete......

/There's even a movie version.

I think it's just the USA.

The Brit Air Force had an aircraft called the Nimrod.

The current US policy on naming operations, which uses an 'approved list' of adjectives
and nouns, is quite lame. We can't have our military operations have names that
offend people.

The Brits at least have a bit more flexibility (the codenames they used for various
ops in Iraq were drawn from the James Bond novels, for example).

Operation Zipper just reminded me of a painful childhood memory.

It involved a zipper.

The fact that Bugs used it in the ironic sense shows that it was already part of the US lexicon. In fact, there are recorded instances of the usage of 'nimrod' in the American sense (fool, etc.) that predate the Bugs Bunny cartoon.

When I was in England as a young teen, and we went to an airshow at Duxford, they flew an RAF Nimrod overhead, very low, which was damned impressive, but I had to explain to my hosts why I chuckled when they announced it as a Nimrod. I thought they were talking about the pilot.

When I was in the Army, occasionally we'd have to participate in Operation Golden Flow, otherwise known as the whizz quiz.
