It's a blatant money move. WBC is doing this because they know the Jackass guys are rich and not known for thinking things all the way through. They're hoping to go down their and instigate a fight with one of them so they can sue.

My only advice to Dunn's friends is "don't fall for it."

/Oh, and pick a designated driver before the wake.

2011-06-21 05:23:59 PM
You know... in spite of all this controversy one way or another, Dunn seemed like he was probably a pretty cool guy. But I sure would hate to have people remembering me as "the guy that shoved a toy car up his ass". I'll bet he never thought that would be his legacy.

2011-06-21 05:25:19 PM
Forget that, pick whoever has the least left out of their Jackass money and make him the designated hitter. The rest can hook him up some dough and give him an extra cut out of Jackass 4: The Jackassening.

gilgigamesh: The Stealth Hippopotamus: The time is finally here Fark!! The Westboro Folk are going to get curb stomped by a group that has the ability and zero money to sue for.

They won't sue the attackers, except maybe as John Does. They will sue the city for failing to adequately provide police protection. Then they get a fat settlement which will fund further asshattery.

Say what you will about WBC, but they are pretty much always thinking three moves ahead.

Wrong. "They sue the shiat out of people - that's how they make their living" because that is the general statement made but there is NO EVIDENCE supporting this. They won the Supreme Court case and the loser has been ordered to pay $16,500 in legal fees. Fred Phelps and his small congregation provide WBC's funding; the group neither solicits nor accepts outside donations. In addition to this income, the church makes money by winning or settling civil lawsuits involving the church. During the 1990s, the group sued Topeka multiple times for failing to provide sufficient protection during its protests. Although they lost most of their cases, WBC did win $43,000 in legal fees in 1993. According to Shirley Phelps-Roper, they also won more than $100,000 in 1995 in a lawsuit against Kansas' Funeral Picketing Act, which they claimed violated their First Amendment rights. Because the Phelps family represents WBC in court, they can put the fees they win towards supporting the church. On July 27, 2010, the city of Bellevue dropped the charges of flag desecration and contributing to the delinquency of a child, due to a federal judge declaring the flag desecration law unconstitutional. The city also paid Phelps-Roper $17,000 in a settlement agreement, in exchange for her dropping a pending lawsuit against the city.
Most articles put their travel/protest expenses at $200k a year or more. These suits they have won in no way support their expenses for the last couple of decades. I would love for someone to prove me wrong as I am genuinely curious, but I cannot find anywhere that supports the Internet "old wives tale" that they sue and win all the time.

The rest of the income is likely supplemented by their law practice. Nearly every adult in that family is a lawyer, and I'm sure they handle plenty of non-WBC related cases that line their pockets.

While they may sue the city if they get roughed up at this one, I'd say their bigger target would be if someone like Knoxville or Margera gets a shot in. The Jackass franchise is a goldmine, low budget movies that have made a ton of money, and they all got a piece.

They're betting that one of the crew loses their cool, which given Margera's temper, is a real possibility.

I've watched a few documentaries on the WBC.

I know I'm not taking my advice here, but the only thing you can do is ignore them. They're functionally a hateful cult. The individual members are real human beings, but they wear their hate like a shroud, and every time something bad happens to them or someone hates them back or the media covers them their hate and cultish beliefs get stronger.

All the people who have left have been people who've been kicked out. I don't think there's been much, if any, voluntary leaving. The one positive thing you can say about the WBC is that they are not hypocrites.

A fair amount of their money comes in from lawsuits. The rest comes from people working. Nothing you can actively do will get rid of them, it will only make them stronger.

That said, if i had a great deal of money, I would follow them around and set up a tolerance counter-protest next to theirs with free hot dogs and stickers everywhere they went. Perhaps play some "devil music" that inspires people to dance. Essentially, throwing a big gay party next to them wherever they were, despite the fact that I'm straight.

I would also make it a point to offer them hot dogs and chips during the protest, because tolerance also means tolerating people like them.

Perhaps I would do this under the guise of The Church of Dudeism. Make some signs:
