Lake County? They should have used the Meth flower.

Guns and bombs are made from metal. No book cover should have any metal on it ever.

My grandfather was unknowingly growing poppy plants in his flower beds at his house. He thought the white flowers were nice. He was working in his yard when the police paid him a visit. He was not charged, the plants were just taken. He wondered why his plants had been disappearing from time to time.

Oh Jeez. Which is the more likely response of Joe Sixpack upon seeing the cover art?

A) Oh, my goodness! A poppy plant! That's where heroin comes from! How dare these people promote illegal drug use like this!!

-or-

B) Hey, look at the pretty flower.

How the hell can someone write an article about a non-pornographic photo and NOT include the photo? That is pathetic.

So friggin what?! The poppy is the state flower of California.

I'm surprised more bakeries aren't raided by the cops. Not only to confiscate all the poppy seed muffins, but to fill up on their quota of donuts for the day.

You know... I'm sure there are lots of plants that, when ingested, can cause a person to enter a euphoric state but give me a freakin' break here. It's a plant! It's a naturally occuring substance.

Maybe God should be brought up on drug charges

I saw on the discovery channel that poppy seeds do cause false positives on drug tests. Expensive blood tests can't be fooled as much, but cheaper at home tests or ones done in doctors offices are often fooled.

I don't think just any poppy will do when it comes to opium production.

Like where Elaine was fired on Seinfeld because she'd been eating all those poppy seed muffins and failed the drug test.

From the Orlando Sentinel Hypothetical Edition:
"Next week's "Movie of the Week", Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope", will not be seen at it's scheduled time. Unfortunately, rope is often made from hemp, and since hemp is associated with an illegal drug, we felt it would be irresponsible to promote drug use in this fashion."

no. you need an opium poppy.

then all you do is this:

take a razor blade and cut very thing slits down the sides of the poppy stem (no need to uproot the flower, let it live) - soon after a white liquid will ooze out the slits you've made.

let the liquid dry in the sun for a few hours, it will turn yellowish. then carefully flake the dried substance off into a container.

tada. opium. put that in your pipe and smoke it!

now all i need to figure out is how to differentiate an opium poppy from a different kind...

... little help here?

2003-08-26 10:51:01 AM
I tried to extract opium resin from my mom's poppy plants once. I had a mind-altering experience all right - her smacking me for taking a razor blade to her flowers.

/ Mom = DEA with a wooden spoon instead of helicopters

And if you want poppy seeds
get 'em here
Of course, you can't plant 'em....

From what I've heard, opium poppies generally have brilliant red flowers although I guess magenta is close. Anyway, I like the look of the flowers, when I eventually have a yard I plan to have some, probably of the non-drug-bearing kind.

WTF? Where does your grandfather live? It's not illegal to grow poppies (in the US). This is the most ridiculous article i have seen in a long time, and that's saying something.

2003-08-26 10:58:30 AM
That's messed up. Lots of plants (even some commonly available house plants) can be used to make drugs. I don't think most people associate poppies with drugs, if anything I would think that most Americans would associate it with veterans groups.

As for the legality of growing poppies? The DEA has a really farked up rule for that one. If you know how to extract opium from the poppy then it's illegal to grow. You never have to actually doit, just know how. If you claim ignorance they can't do much to you. You can get opium from any type of poppy even though the DEA spreads lots of FUD to the contrary. If you want to know how to make opium, Harpers (yes that Harpers) had a really good article on it a few years ago that you can find in their online archives.

2003-08-26 10:58:40 AM
There was an article about this subject in Harpers Magazine a few years back. Gardeners have been growing opium poppies for years. They were even growing them at Jefferson's Monticello, because he grew them way back then, too. The Feds stepped in and made them get rid of them. All sorts of seed companies sold the seeds, too, and there has been a lot of pressure to get rid of them. They DO have very pretty flowers,so that is why Grandmas have been growing them for many years, without really realizing what they were. Like a lot of people, until I read that article,I just assumed opium poppies only grew in places like Thailand or Turkey. Guess not.

2003-08-26 10:59:06 AM
sooo you're not even allowed to show pictures of plants that could be turned into something else using some kind of chemical process?

ok.. no more pictures of aloe-vera plants (those innards can heal you!), or maple trees (too much sugar y'know), or rubber trees (junkies might use a rubber band when they inject themselves!), or any of the other bajillion plants that we use every day.

80% of people would see a poppy, not opium. damn political correctness.

2003-08-26 11:00:06 AM
Odd. For Rememberance Day in the UK, we sell mock poppy flowers - they are red, not white... (different kinds?) They traditionally grow where large bombs went off. Err, that's all I know about poppies.

2003-08-26 11:00:06 AM
Oh, honestly- does the book list the phone numbers of opium and heroin dealers? If not, what's the problem?

/could do with forty winks herself

Poppies are also a symbol of World War II veterans. Dang peace-loving hippies!

2003-08-26 11:07:44 AM
Opium poppies seem like a natural choice for a phone company. All those junkies gouching out while on the phone would boost their profits very nicely thank you...

2003-08-26 11:11:54 AM
WTF, is there some kind of 'Fark Florida quota' that has to be met?

This article is pointless.

really... this is interesting. can anyone confirm this? what's the natural poppy season? I swear I saw some growing beside the 401 on my way back from Montreal a few weeks ago.

Years back there was a perfectly delightful telephone book cover that had a cardinal standing in a marajauana bush.

I can't find the picture on the internet.

(I also suspect that I can't spell marajauana.)

The artist, when confronted by Ma Bell, told the company that she only painted what she saw.

Absolutely not true.
For example.. the California Poppy, botanical name Eschscholtzia Californica, contains no opiate alkaloids. It is their state flower, after all.

....just because it contains no opiates doesn't mean it doesn't have effects on the human who consumes it -- it still has a "mild relaxing and sedative effect," it's just not a narcotic

Veterns were my first thought also, they used to give you an artificial poppy on veterns day for a donation. I think it represented the poppy fields in France, am I correct?

Opium is the religeon of the people.

The minute any government or law enforcement agency tries to regulate plants (which God created), they are, in effect, saying that they don't believe in God.

If God put them here, he must have had a reason. So, if someone wants to ban any sort of plant at all, that person is disagreeing with God, and is therefore Anti-God.
