(Some Guy)   It's finally happened, "Fark News reporter" Ric Romero actually publishes a story that is actually helpful and not ruthlessly obvious   (abclocal.go.com) divider line 35

Nope, this one is obvious too. Everyone knows movers are scammers and both local and national reporters have been doing stories about them for years, if not decades. Ric, you're behind on the news again.

I get a mental picture of poor Ric who gets constantly teased by his co-workers because of his Fark infamy.

I hope he doesn't snap someday, and cause a real news story.

Ric is quite a classy guy, he used his fark notoriety for charity

Never hire a moving company that employs Russians or other eastern Europeans, they'll steal anything that's not nailed down.

Has Romero ever referenced Fark on the air or even in an interview?

Yeah, hard to bag on the guy after that - classy is right. I'd post the link, but the fark search and my memory are failing me.

At least Romero isn't an outright jackhole like John Stossel. I think Stossel has mental problems.

This happened to my co-worker. He was moving from a different city in the next province and the movers kept missing the delivery date. They kept stalling and in the meantime he was living in an apartment (paid for by the company). This went on for a couple of weeks.

I told him to call Visa and reverse the payment then call the movers back and tell them that he reversed the payment and once the furniture was delivered he'd be happy to pay the outstanding balance.

The furniture was delivered that afternoon.

The moral is if you're fighting a business, hit `em in the moneybags.

It may not be new, but obviously you need to remind people of the same facts occasionally. In this case the victim was a recent college graduate from Duke Law.

//Okay, by Fark rules she both sucks for being Duke and being a lawyer who didn't get the written estimate, contract and such.

The last time I hired movers, the bill suddenly went up $150 at the end. I refused to pay it and sat on the phone with the owner/manager/whatever until they agreed to accept what I was quoted.

Oh, and those motherfarkers broke one of the casters off my 65" TV and just stood there like "What?"

Not fixable.

If you're emphasizing "not ruthlessly," I might agree, but it is a rather obvious article on its merits.

That's gotta be frustrating.

I think I'd cough up the money and get my stuff.

Then, I think I would pretty much dedicate myself to tracking those bastards down and making their lives more difficult.

2011-06-17 12:13:49 PM
I'd rather help friends move their stuff than hire thugs and thieves. Some day they might repay me, but if not it's still the right thing to do.

Coincidentally, I might be moving in the next few weeks, so... anyone got a truck?

Better idea (more obnoxious ITG idea), hire the same company to move more boxes, hide a gps in one, then visit them....

The best way is to hire a U-Haul or some shiat, and get your friends to help you by supplying them with large amounts of beer when the move is over.

Interstate crime? Jurisdictional issues? This seriously sounds like a job for the FBI.

"when the move is over" being the most important part of that statement.

Absolutely, otherwise they'll end up scratching and breaking so much stuff, you'd think they were professionals.

No, once you hire movers you don't have to help people move ever again. It's in the guy code, straight up.

Last time I moved they started at 9am and were done by 12am at the new house (across town). It would have taken me and my friends days to do the same thing. You're telling me that wasn't worth $300?

Also, where the hell are the Richard Prior pictures?

True dat. Gotta respect a guy who can laugh at himself.

If you have the ability, why not just move your shiat yourself? I can understand if you're a business man, an elderly person, or have a disability... but if none of the above - don't be so farkin lazy. Half the satisfaction of moving to a new place is getting your friends together with a few beers and getting that shiat done!

Yep. As mentioned by others, he called all of Fark out last year to help give to his charity, and mentioned it on the air a few times. As much as we all laugh at him, he gets much respect around here.

Ric Romero's ok by me. Was very impressed with his response to Fark on his Facebook.

You sound like someone who only moves whenever you get kicked out of your previous apartment.

Yeah, it's finally happened, there's a Duke Law grad who's not enough of a colossal dick to cut bozos like this a new arsehole one handed with the knife from a Happy Meal.

And no, I'm not a friend of Drew's. I'm a UNC alum.

Why not just pay them whatever they ask, charge it to a credit card, then dispute the charges? "No, that amount is far beyond what they were authorized. See? Here's the original estimate they gave me. They said it would cost $150, not $3,000. They shouldn't have charged that much."

I like another farker's GPS idea, but usually they put your stuff in a U-store-it until the extortion is paid.

Also, said movers just reincorporate under a different name every month, so it's hard to track them down; be especially vigilant of any company that identifies itself only as "moving company" instead of a real name, for example when answering the phone or on the side of a truck. Or whose name changes before the actual move.
