Stupid? No. Hero? I think so.

SF is great because they care about ALL forms of life. Unlike repuli-tards, who send your children to war to murder other children.

Please take your dirty breeder angst elsewhere and leave SF alone, subtard.

Fox News See how wacky those Liberals are? Look at them! Laugh and point!

2011-06-16 10:44:41 PM
I can sort of see the point.

Many people go into keeping an aquarium without doing any research what so ever.

They fill the aquarium up, plop the fish in, and wonder why they suffer for a couple weeks before dieing.
However that doesn't mean you ban fish completely.

You know, as a liberal born in California... let them worry about the goldfish. It prevents them from making really strange laws that apply to people.

/I doubt they'll live that circumcision thing down.

Is it really so much to ask for city officials to just...do nothing for a while?

The proposed ban is meant to discourage "impulse buys" of pets that sometimes end up at shelters, said commission member Philip Gerrie.

Is shelters a euphemism for toilet? Who the hell brings a goldfish to a shelter? Feed it to a stray cat or a crow if you don't want to flush it.

The Board of Supervisors considered a similar ban last year that would have included dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats and guinea pigs - but not fish. That proposed ban was tabled last August. The supervisor said they were going to reconsider it in January of this year - but did not.

W. T. F.

They want to ban cats and dogs and rodents? I mean, dogs, maybe, since they shiat everywhere and SF is a dense city. But the rest?? You keep them in your house and no one would know any different.

Protect the goldfish but make sure the tourists eat plenty of seafood at Fisherman's Wharf.

I think they are being very koi.

First they came for the kittens. I ignored this because I am allergic to cats.

Then they came for the puppies. I ignored this because I have my own biatch.

Then they came for the hamsters. I ignored this because . . . well, they were hamsters.

Then they came for the goldfish, and I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair and dislocated my sense of humor.

Having worked in shelters I'm pretty sure the the staff would take it and thank them for their "concern" before turning around and feeding it to a cat.

Also, FTA

The San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission wants to take away your goldfish, proposing a bill that would also include a renewed ban on pets like puppies, kittens and hamsters.

Would existing pets be grandfathered in or what? Obviously it would mean that any new pets couldn't be brought in. How would any normal parent explain to their kid that the government says they can't have a puppy? I know that there is a disturbingly high percentage of animals that are in bad homes but does that mean that everyone else should be punished instead of just punishing the bad ones? That those animals that are cared for shouldn't be allowed to persist as a species? This is the stupid type of stuff that PETA people push without really thinking about implications of their actions.

They could at least make a distinction between tropical fish and goldfish. One might possibly have been harvested from the ocean by a diver. The other is a freshwater carp that eat everything and breed into infinity.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are not most aquarium fish now a days bread in captivity? Most aquarium fish are the product of selective breeding to make them more visually appealing than their wild counterparts which are often much more dull in colour. Wild guppies for example are just grey minnows and the males have a few dark spots. Aquarium guppies, even the common type have been selectively bread to be more colourful. As well, captive breeding allows better control over disease spread than introducing wild fish into a captive environment.

Granted not all fish will breed in captivity but from what I understand if the fish does breed in captivity then most of the aquarium fish of this type are bread in captivity.

Aren't there already laws in place protecting endangered fish and corals? The tropical fish stores I've visited all made a point to post where the fish came from and how they were acquired. Protected species were all captive bred not taken from the wild anyway. Goldfish are in no danger of going extinct. Plus how else am I supposed to cycle a new aquarium?

Why stop at real goldfish? I say we outlaw owning tasty Goldfish snack crackers! And animal crackers! And Gummi bears and worms... hell let's outlaw eating or owning the whole Gummi menagerie! I say we just eat plants, but we can't own these, our cellulosy brethren! No wait, that's another inhuman thing we treat inhumanely, especially when it's something like a topiary deer or a radish that's been carved into a swan or some other garnishy animal. Let's just eat sand, but only sand that we've gently and humanely removed sand mites and other living things from. And we can only have rocks for pets, unless there's lichen on it. Who's going to think of the lichen? We are!

The goldfish of today are descendants of a wild carp fish, known as the Prussian Carp, Silver Prussian carp, or Gibel Carp Carassius gibelio (syn: Carassius auratus gibelio) which was described by Bloch in 1782. These wild carp originated in Asia; Central Asia (siberia). They inhabit the slow moving and stagnant waters of rivers, lakes, ponds, and ditches feeding on plants, detritus, small crustaceans, and insects.

I dare say that small ponds and waterfilled ditches aren't all that dissimilar from a moderate sized goldfish tank. So unless you can provide me a study showing higher cortisol levels or the like from goldfish in tanks compared to wild fish I have to disagree with your assumption.

Now this part -

"It causes animal suffering," Gerrie told Fox News Radio. "Whole reefs and ecosystems are being exploited for whatever might be marketable or sellable."

Makes ultimate sense after you get wised up to the fact that commercial hobby fish suppliers in Hawaii have indeed begun to strip reefs clean of fish to sell to wholesalers to sell to hobbyists. I read a huge article on this fact about 3-5 years ago. So yeah, ban the exotics as they're harvesting wild, not captive bred. I suppose it's also just as easy to include goldfish because, "yeah, gimme the chassis wax with that lube job for an extra buck".
