So, have we used the term 'done in none' as the headline says it all?

An "Eh?" joke? Really?

Except this whole article is full of shiat.

The rioting didn't occur because their hockey team lost.

Some people came to the game armed with crowbars and gasoline tanks. They were going to use them no matter what.

Hence the idea that 'beer' was really the answer?

The point is the article doesn't matter, it's full of shiat. It's the beer.

Neither Dallas or Miami had any riots because neither home town expected the outcome.

Cleveland, on the other-hand, would have rioted but they were too amused.

Well, in this case I guess "beer and stupidity" would be the correct answer.

You don't bring fire extinguishers and gas masks to playoff games? What's wrong with you?

Hockey is crazy. No wonder there were riots and fires and unicorns and baby seals and My Little Ponies and John Farnham singing "You're the voice" and psy trance remixes of Screw Top by Shihad.

Oh wait, that was the last camping trip I went on. Sorry, it's been a long week...

In the past people have felt anonymous in a crowd. With the advent of all the camera phones, these incidents are now pretty well documented. After a few more of these wherre all the perps get rounded up after the fact, people might start to be a bit less likely to be so crazy in public. Of course crowd mentality isn't quite so logical, but I think people might wise up a bit.

// the sucky thing of course is that this is due to an erosion in privacy
/// but really we have to get used to the idea that in public we'll be on camera

Vancouver is full of nutbags. Really. We have the "corporations are killing us", "the man is keeping me down", "I should get paid for not doing a farking thing" etc. crowd. Furthermore you have the extremes and anarchists that come here and prey on that. Vancouver is great because it does draw the diverse. Unfortunately, the diverse includes everything. Vancouver is great because it is so laid back. Unfortunately, that keeps us from stepping in and saying cut that shiat out.

Also, the Mayor of Vancouver has not gotten his head out of his ass. He is a unicorn and cotton candy mayor. There has been no increase in funding the police force for 20 years, he still thinks Vancouver has the small town mindset without taking into account the cultural changes and civic changes that have happened since then. If we want to play with the big kids then we have to play by there rules, which means a better equipped police force.. He also seems to think that our only problem is the homeless in the east end and low incomes. *News Flash* I cannot afford to live downtown, why do you get to.

FWIW, was as quiet as a church where I lived and the kids were walking along Scott and 72nd hanging out with their buds.

Another summary of the article:

"I'm an academic making a boatload of generalizations and assumptions, and just hope that nobody catches on to the fact that I have no idea what I'm talking about."

I love me some Tennessee football, and I'm bummed when they lose (I get bummed a lot these days), but I've never been so invested that it did more than mildly upset me. And even the biggest win they've ever pulled off only encouraged us to maybe order a couple more rounds to celebrate; I don't think we were ever compelled to rush out into the street and start vandalizing random targets.

Procedural Texture: A much better article with actual depth on the psychology of rioting. (new window)

Um, no-- that one sucked too.

2011-06-17 05:22:47 AM
Actually, I was reading a similar Fark story (Can't find it, too lazy to link it.) BEFORE the riots started.

One of the psych guys was saying that everytime this happens, the cops make a statement and say:
"This would never happen here. We have a very friendly sports community, and it's family orientated."

NOT FIVE FARKING LINES DOWN, there was a Vancouver police sergeant saying DAMN NEAR that exact same line.
"That won't happen again, I swear. We have a very friendly family orientated sports community."

Just boggled my mind how on the money the psychologist actually was.

/Studebaker, go to sleep.

There was no rioting in Boston, because all the college kids when home for the summer.

Nope. This is Canada, so it was clearly the work of Anarchists.

2011-06-17 08:31:00 AM
Yeah, the police dude in Vancouver said it was only a small group of "anarchists" which caused every damn college aged kid in that area to flip out at the same time. Dumbasses.

Immaturity, lack of accountabiliy, or the old time favourite stupidity is also acceptable.
Canadians suck.

Beer? No, methinks the rioters were idiots long before they even became sports fans, much less drank a beer.

Probably genetic. Best to shoot them all and clean up the gene pool a bit.

2011-06-17 09:34:18 AM
Even being a huge sports fan, I think starting a riot just because your team won/lost is beyond stupid. Isn't sports supposed to be a "great equalizer"; where a diverse society comes together for a common goal? I actually saw pictures of Canuck fans fighting each other in the streets. What.The.Fark?!

What happened to people just getting blitzed and either celebrating or drowning their sorrows together?

2011-06-17 09:35:28 AM
One possible reason why sports fans riot is to increase their level of arousal and that of a possible sexual partner. Ovid suggested this in Ars Amatoria: take a lady to the gladiators' games to turn her on with excitement; and she will respond more passionately later on.

There was a picture of a young couple reclining amorously in a Vancouver street while a riot was going on. They must have gotten caught up in the moment!

2011-06-17 09:39:16 AM
Beer? Alcohol? No, it's much deeper than that. This touches upon more than sports team fanatics. It's similar to political fanatics, war fanatics, patriotic fanatics and many other us-vs-them mindsets. If we could get to the root of this one we might be able to stop a lot of BS from happening.

/but good luck changing the core of humanity.

Yup. Don't forget they also came with the balaclavas stuffed in their pockets, to be put on once it was 'start a riot' time. Noone just carries around those unless they're starting something.

These same assholes were behind much of the vandalism prior to the 2010 Olympics.

I hope police catch every one of them motherfarkers.

In addition, the only people in that crowd making good decisions was the couple making out in the street. Now that is turning a bad situation into something positive.
