"When women collude to restrict men's sexual access to women, all women tend to benefit," he said, noting that "if women were more in charge of how their romantic relationships transpired ... we would be seeing greater male investment in relationships, more impressive wooing efforts, fewer hookups, fewer premarital sexual partners ... shorter cohabitations, more marrying ... and more marrying at a slightly earlier age. In other words, the price of sex would be higher. It would cost men more to access it."

Well, as they say, you're not paying them for sex so much as paying them to leave.

In your case, you're paying them not to call you fatty while doing it, too.

Married people, compared with adults in other situations, enjoy the highest household incomes, highest male earnings and highest net worth at retirement, Ms. Waite and Ms. Gallagher wrote.
The reasons for this prosperity include a real-but-unwritten "wage premium" that husbands frequently earn and the prodigious ability of wives to save and hunt for bargains, they wrote.

...or it could have to do with having two incomes.

But please, go on to tell us how women's contributions to a household income primarily come from their ability to shop.

Article opens with song lyrics as proof that there's a sex "market."

(closes window)

There's a "market" for everything, but quoting song lyrics doesn't illustrate it.

Nope; he's actually aiding your cause. Re-read this part:

The new sexual economy is especially disadvantageous to any woman who wants to remain a virgin until her wedding day, he said. These women essentially never enter the sex market, but instead "hold out for the highest price for sex, which is marriage."

Today, that is a high-risk strategy, Mr. Regnerus explained, using a housing-market analogy: "You can't just decide that your house is worth $500,000 if everyone else is getting $200,000. ... You can try for that price, but it's unlikely you will get it."

That is basically saying that a woman who tries to remain a virgin until marriage will never be able to get married. If women colluded, sure, that wouldn't be the case, but for an individual woman, he's saying that she's better off having sex early and often.

This tripe seems to get trotted out so often. It's a rather sickening and demeaning way of looking at all women as whores, yet the try to paint it over as saying woman who are empowered and aren't looking to sell sex are some how actually the trashy ones ruining society.

Maybe I just hang out with a bunch of sluts, but most of my female friends and girlfriends have always been interested in sex for its own sake, not as a precursor to marriage or commitment.

FTA: Say a young man wants to get to know his girlfriend of two months "more," he said. If she says no, "then this tells the man, 'The price is higher than you think.' And he will have to figure out how high the price is: Does she need more time, more commitment?"

Also, if we've been dating for two months and haven't had sex, we're not dating.

Or at the very least ignored for spouting complete bullshiat.

I don't know if the "naturalisation" of 1950s socio-sexual values by appeal to fictional nuclear cave families is sadder and tireder.

But it's not happy to read.

Because sex is so important to you that you'd overlook all other qualities a person had if that one little piece was different than yours?

Pretty much. I don't demand sex on the first date or anything, and I'm comfortable with "when it feels right", but if we're not there in two months, we're probably not ever going to be there.

There could be special circumstances, of course, such as distance. But mostly, if I'm seeing someone on a regular basis and they don't want to have sex after two months, there's other issues in the relationship that should have become apparent well beforehand.

TFA: "Men tend to rule marriage market...for young single Americans, modern rules of romantic engagement "clearly favor men" and penalize women who want to marry..."

Um, excuse me - the entire institution of marriage exists almost exclusively to serve the interests of women. Broadly speaking (and as TFA generally says), marriage is the price that men have to pay for what they want. How this translates into men "ruling the marriage market" defies comprehension.

The fact that men are not in a negotiating position to say, "F that, we're not playing by your rules anymore" is a pretty clear indication of who rules the marriage market.

I know here are some women that *are* like me in mindset, but as guy, I honestly don't get most women. They clearly love sex, almost as much as I do - some more. Yet they're so uptight about having it.
Me, I'd fark any woman under 60 and over 16 (age of consent in UK) unless she is quite hideously ugly or comes with serious risk of disease etc.

Even then there are paper bags and condoms.

Yet women are very particular etc. Doesn't add up to me. Hell, if I were a woman, I'd be a prostitute. No shame, no bones bout it, money for sex? Abso-farking-lutely. Where do I sign?

Yet women? Very few are like that, and even then, usually just to feed a smack habit or whatever. Is this a guy thing, or are most guys not like me in this thinking?

/ Not really into guys, sadly. Been there, tried it, not really my thing...otherwise I could probably dig the rent-boy thing...it's just farking after all!!

About that...

Yeah, but to be fair I think the author uses the term 'marriage market' to refer to the ability to become married, which is controlled moreso by men.

After the man is married, unless he really lucked out, he's farked.

Although I will say this (srs bsns guyz)

Marriage was supposed to be a way to keep women safe, and for men to place ownership on them. Some guy said that marriage was a way to trap a man, but really, it was because you men didn't give us womens rights for a really freakin long time, so we needed to have someone to protect us, financially and physically.

In addition, marriage legitimizes YOUR sons men, which is how the family line gets perpetuated. (or your daughters, but no one cared about them.)

Marriage, for the most part, was out there to protect the mens interest / property / linage. Just keep that in mind. :)

A sex drive is an important quality in a woman. Also not being a hyper prude with values that were outdated 30 years ago and being in touch with her own body rank pretty high on my qualities list.

It left when he figured out she was making him clock a set amount of time. That's fine if you are talking about company health insurance kicking in after 30 days or so. You're talking about simple manipulation. She usually knows pretty quickly if she's gonna sleep with him or not but for the sake of her self respect, she makes him go through the motions. She sounds like a lot of fun.
