I have "traces of radiation" when I come in from spending 10 minutes in the sunshine.

Maybe, just maybe, this might put a dent in Japanese whaling.

Oh, I'm so naive. They will just use this as an excuse to do more "research."

So, you Japanese folks should probably stop farkING KILLING WHALES! Just to be safe.

Stop farking killer whales, too. They'll bite your dick off.

"The levels are far below the limit, and the meat from the catch is safe for consumption," Fisheries Agency official Kosei Takekoshi said.

Ooooooookay. Yeah, I know it is. And I'm sure if it wasn't you'd be the first to tell me.

It's only the older Japanese who eat whale. They aren't going to care about traces of radioactivity.

Well, it's America's fault, so obviously they have the right to do so. farking Australians.

Article doesn't mention if they are still whaletastically delicious?

When they mutate into land walking, bloodthirsty creatures, I'm pretty sure we're gonna be able to hear the whalers' screams from here.

TFA: "The levels are far below the limit, and the meat from the catch is safe for consumption," Fisheries Agency official Kosei Takekoshi said.

The annoying part of this statement is that they're not even pretending the whales are caught for scientific research anymore.

Yes, Minke whales are nowhere near endangered, so a complete commercial whaling ban makes no sense. But yegads, you're not going to sell your point by so blatantly flaunting the spirit of regulation!

2011-06-15 03:58:15 PM
Well, they might be safe for consumption, but this will definitely impact their value for scientific experimentation.

Because that's what Japanese whaling is really about.

Science.

It's perfectly fine to sell off the part of the whale that isn't used for research. It just so happens that the only part of the whale needed for research in Japan is the blowhole.

/It's Japan, that's only slightly kinky there.

Maybe the Japanese said "Growing whales."

From the article: What is an "oil fence?"

This is just another excuse so that the Japanese can continue to kill whales and eat them. And, of course the whales are contaminated. The whole area is contaminated. Raise your hand if you are still confused by the concept of "contamination." Let me explain it again, Billy:

It was a meltdown. It was a situation during which radioactive materials were released into the air and water, the environment, if you will. In consequence, living things that frolic in the area, and even inert things which are just stuck there, will, in fact, eventually show signs of contamination. This is bad even for a rock, but for living things it is worse, because this contamination can cause genetic mutations which can be passed down through generations, and these mutations are not likely to engender X-men with super powers. These mutations will likely result in infants without arms and or legs as was experienced in Belarus after Chernobyl. 300,000 to date.

Read a biography of Madame Curie, Billy.

Yea but your dealing with a sea food based culture.
Its like telling an American he cant eat the cows.
While the thought of radioactive elements in their burgers would surely damage sales, there is still enough of a demand (and outright ignorance/willfulness) to keep the butcher in business.

If anything they'll reduce the price of whale meat just to keep gas in their "scientific" ships while lying to the customers about how bad the radiation is.

Settle down there, Captain Science. Damned near everything is radioactive. The levels they are talking about are unlikely to cause any serious problems.

Does it suck? Yes... but don't go soiling your good panties just yet.

They should be forced to eat them since they love whaling so much. Waste not, want not.

Why on earth would whales go anywhere near Japan.

/I have a cousin that's a Commander in the Navy a he told me that whales have learned to hang around Navy ships when whaling boats are around.

Poppa Boner: My panties are lead foil, and they clean up easily. I grew up on strontium 90 in the 50's and 60's.

And, yes, everything is radioactive, but if things get contaminated with extra radiation, they become more radioactive. The more radioactive, the more genetic mutations and very few genetic mutations are helpful.

My point is simply that everything they test that they collect in the contaminated area is going to show signs of being contaminated because that is exactly what the word, "contaminated," means! Contaminated! Class dismissed, I need a drink.

2011-06-15 06:18:40 PM
Two of 17 minke whales caught off the Pacific coast of Hokkaido showed traces of radioactive cesium, both about one-twentieth of the legal limit

The horror. One twentieth of an intentionally low limit.

But you are being hyperbolic about it. They cleared out the areas where there would be a problem and we know far more about the effects of radiation and how to deal with it since Chernobyl. I'm gonna assume they will do everything they can to keep the mutant babies to a minimum.

You also have to remember Russia hid the Chernobyl incident letting the radiation waft into unsuspecting populaces. That is not the case here.

Oh, well, in that case...don't look too hard for the second season, and I'm glad I didn't say more about the end of the first...

The ocean has a way of overcoming sh*t like this.

With the proper monitoring human exposure from seafood will be kept to a minimum and over time the sea life will recover.

And just so you don't get the wrong impression I find this all to be disgusting and that the people who allowed that POS nuke farm to continue operating as it was should be severely punished.

All I'm saying is is don't over exaggerate the situation.

It's certainly not good but it is far from being the catastrophe you are implying.
