JackieRabbit: beave315: Does anyone just think that kids this age shouldn't have cell phones?

A 13 year old has no need for a cell phone. He should never be anywhere where he is not under direct adult supervision and his parents should know exactly where he is at all times. So the common argument that "I want him to be able to get in touch with me if he needs me" just doesn't wash with me. When I was 13, I could talk on the phone only in my parent's presence.

This seems to me, to be a pretty narrow view on parenting. And, IMO, if a 13 year old kid has to be watched every second, then there are bigger problems at hand. Poor kids going to need to hold Mommy and Daddy's hand well into his 30s.

NightOwl2255: Well then, that ends the discussion. Cause if your parents did it, it's the only way.

Not at all. I only point this out so that we understand that parents don't generally keep a close enough eye on their young teens anymore, nor do they have rules that are designed to protect their kids from themselves and the many dangers in the world. Then they wonder how their daughter being nailed by a perv can happen and blame society.

Bathia_Mapes: FYI-a teacher's aide is not a teacher. Many of them don't have education beyond a high school diploma.

In Cali (where this story takes place), you have to have an associates or take an extensive test to have that job.

Agreed. If the kid was 8, then I could understand the lack of need for a cell phone. The kid is going to be in 1 or 2 places 99% of the time. When I was 13, I could've been at school, home, 10 different friends houses, the park, arcades, etc. That's when a cell phone is justifiable.

I can only assume you are fairly young. In my experience 20-30-40 years ago people were much more likely to not hover over a child. When I was 10 we would play outside, unsupervised, until the street light came on, that's when it was time to come in.

My middle boy is 10 right now, He's got a whole gaggle of friends he runs around with. That is important shiat at that age, both in helping him grow up and with self confidence. I'm his Dad, so I find I want to hover way more than I should. Got to teach them to do the right thing, then let them do it, otherwise, they spend their lives scared in the basement with a bad case of Agoraphobia.

The phone is more for me than him, my Dad used to yell at me across town, I could pick his voice up from 15 or 20 blocks away. I can just call Rafe and tell him to get his delinquent ass home. Much easier. Besides, I keep a pretty close eye on his usage, Haa, he still thinks I can see his texts online, you should see him panic when he gets something from one of his friends that in a 10 year old eyes, seems racy.

Nicely done. My first marks were 6/10 but with all the responses I'll up it to 9/10. Keep up the good work - must be those early morning McD pancakes!

13? There is nothing even slightly okay about that. 23Teacher/17Student is one thing. It is still a bit icky, but at least understandable. But this is nasty.

Cell phones and kids: There are very few public payphones anymore, and none in my town. If my kid needs a ride, she needs a phone with which to call me. Also, I am able to let her be independant, because I am confident that if she ran into an emergency situation, she has the means to call for help immediately, and won't have to run hither and yon looking for a phone.

Don't mess with Sext's.

They didn't say they had texts. They said someone allegedly saw some texts.

Doesn't sound like they have a lot of evidence here, apart from the story of a 13 year old boy - who would NEVER lie about sex.

So, was your tutor from Canada, so I wouldn't know her?

.

But... Knowing that 13yr olds can be imaginative, those texts would have to be pretty compelling for police to act, right? Right?

Let's try that again.

"Authorities were alerted after a relative allegedly discovered text messages from Polson on the boy's cellphone."

Nowhere does it say that the authorities either have or saw these texts themselves. If they did, I doubt they would be asking for more people to come forward.

So how compelling would they have to be to act when Aunt Betty says "I saw these texts but they are no longer on the phone."?

Cue up the "What are camel toads?" story.

Oh snap.

When my kids get to Jr. High they will have cell phones. Do they need them? No, but I can afford them and they are convenient for both me and them. It also becomes a great control device. "If you can't manage to make it home on time you will lose your cell phone."

As far as 13 year olds having cell phones being right or wrong, my 10 year old daughter has a cell phone.

The reason being is her mother has custody in another state and does not wanting me to have the home phone number. I pay for it and can talk to her at our convenience. She also has a way to contact me immediately.

However, my 10 year old stepson does not. His father passed away and there is no need for him to have one. He is either at school, home, his grandparents or playing close the house.

It helps we live in a rural area and all the neighbors know each other and if he needs to he can use any of their phones to call.

Should young kids have phones? There is no easy answer. Each situation should be taken into accoun.

So you got a cell phone for your genetic daughter but your stepson doesn't get one. And you seem to have rationalised the two-tier treatment very nicely. Good for you.
