The Bestest: I'm not usually fatalistic, but I'm close to saying turn out the lights ont he Yankees' chances this year. With the signings of Feliciano and Soriano to suppliment Joba and Mo, the Yankees were supposed to have THE bullpen to end all bullpens. Now we have Wheel of Starters, while we hope they can maintain a lead (tough chore with Mr. "Infield Grounders are hits.. sometimes!" leading off) long enough to get to Mo, who certainly isn't getting any younger. Not that it matters, since the Yankees are playing for a wild card spot at best, given their complete incapacity to beat the Red Sox this year (1-7 against them thus far, with 5 of those games coming at home, all losses). Hell, if not for the Orioles both occupying the spot and graciously spotting the Yankees 6 of their wins, we'd be looking at them in the division basement.

The day Lee signed with Philly was the day I knew they'd be a wild card at best. They should use the rest of this year to bring up some pitchers and get them some experience.

This was supposed to be a good bullpen. Instead, Joba is hurt, Soriano is hurt (and sucks), and Boone Logan is terrible. Great. Just great.

And tonight is a 10:30 start time. That means that the game will be wrapping up when I wake up in the morning

They would've had a shaky staff WITH him, and an awful staff without him. How long do you think Colon and Garcia will keep up the charade? They've been lucky so far, so far, but if you think they were making a run with this team, you're crazy. Complaining about the bullpen is like complaing about a missing hubcap on your beat up 1983 honda. This team is not going anywhere, Boston has beaten the shiat out of them every game, and if you haven't noticed it happens in the first few innings, bullpen isn't an issue here. Burnett is a spaz, you never know what you'll get, and he's our #2.

Sure, they'll slug out a bunch of wins vs shiatty teams, but this is the weakest team since the early 90's. I'd take Scott Sanderson over most of our starters.

Baseball players are nocturnal by the nature of the sport. Most games don't start until 7-8pm...and end sometime between 10-11....then shower, change, interviews, and players meetings before they leave the park can take an hour or more...then they either drive to a hotel or their their home getting in well after midnight or to some airport to get on a plane and fly somewhere (often not getting into the next city until 3 or 4am (maybe later)....then drive to the hotel, check in....

The result....most players sleep until noon or later... make their way to the park, meander around, fielding, batting practice, some food, see the trainer, play the game....and it starts all over again..

get into that cycle for a few months, years and that becomes your routine...even when you're not playing you stay up until 2-3am just becuase you can't fall asleep at 10pm...

So the answer is that they will be awake anyway, they'd rather play it tonight than a double header tomorrow or on some off day later in the year...it's only a small disruption to game day routines, but they don't loose any sleep waiting until 10pm.

But will this affect Joba's Hall of Fame certainty?

Well, the doubleheader factor is part of it since the Yanks already have at least two games to make up from the rainy April/May schedule.

Still, the real reason is that Jeter's got an outside chance at getting his 3000th hit at home, and giving up a game reduces the odds greatly considering he can barely get the ball out of the infield anyway. They go on the road for a week after the homestand ends, so if he doesn't get his 10 hits in the next 7 games, it's likely it won't happen at Yankee Stadium.

The good news for people who were at the game last night is the Yankees are giving them free tickets to another game this year.
