Big deal. It's not like they'll be allowed to drill it anyway.

Excellent news!

TFA: The secretary of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Scott Angelle called it "a great day for the Gulf of Mexico offshore energy industry and a great day for America."

Ohh when will Louisiana learn? :(

It sounds so simple I just got to go.

"The oil industry employs about 58,000 Louisiana residents and has created another 260,000 oil-related jobs, accounting for about 17% of all Louisiana jobs."

Uh oh. That deposit is under 7,000 feet of water. Guess the oil companies are going to have to raise gas prices.

2011-06-09 12:37:10 PM
I am sure our government will make sure we will not be able to drill it. Every other country will, but for whatever reason Obama and company will make sure we can't use it.

Tuesday : Oil slick discovered in gulf fishing grounds.

Wednesday : Huge oil discovery in gulf.

I suspect we've entered a temporal causality loop.

Good thing it's the law that oil extracted from our waters can only be processed into gasoline and sold to Americans.

Clearly, this will solve the increase in gas prices. There is no way speculators won't jump on this like a fat kid on a cake, and there's no way any company that drills won't sell much of it to China and India.

Huzzah!

Why even bother with the rest, any more?

This is fortunate for ExxonMobile. I wonder if ExxonMobil knows anything about it.

700 million barrels is 35 days of supply to the US. Hardly a big discovery...

The oil giant says a new well in 7,000 feet of water

And if something happens and that well blows a leak, you can stop it quicker than in 3 months time, right? I mean, there are new methods to capping these things now after we learned our lesson and spent time and all of those record profits you earned on research and development to prevent these tragedies, right?

I mean Exxon, you alone made $11 Billion in profit last quarter. Surely you spent lots of money on this, right?

2011-06-09 12:43:19 PM
What's the big deal? Obama will just give it to the Chinese, or Cubans.

2011-06-09 12:43:29 PM
Quick, lets give it away to the Chinese!

Yes, there are several companies now offering ways to cap wells.

If you do some research, you'll find that BP is something of a pariah within the industry because of its poor maintenance and safety practices.

But we're not running out of oil.

We've certainly lowered our standards for "great day for America" since V-J Day.

I expect gas to be under $2 on the way home now.

Don't worry. Obama won't let us drill it, and China will be glad to come in and take it.

The funny part is that people think America doesn't produce enough oil:

So what?

Not only is this not a ton of oil, the fact that they're touting this discovery as a big deal shows just how much oil has dwindled as a resource. What people don't understand is that during, say, the 70's, oil companies would collectively make 20 or 30 discoveries like this a year. THAT is what would be needed to keep up with demand. Oil field discoveries have been going down every year since like the eighties, though.

This field, even though somewhat sizable as oil fields these days go, makes basically zero difference in anything except Exxon's pocketbooks. So, good for investors, meaningless for everyone else.

At what point does the earth's crust collapse from having too many resources sucked from it's lower layers?

Perhaps that is the fires of Hell that Revelations was talking about.
