I'm sure he can gain a lot of Conservative and Religious Fascist support due to his outstanding credentials:

The Tea Party may call him a RINO today, but as the election draws near they could decide to shut up and vote for him when their favorites like Cain and Palin suck.

2011-06-09 09:38:41 AM
And he's an evolutionist. (new window) The horror.

This'll lead to the cries of RINO, Romney loses his support because of the lunatic fringe right, and Sarah Palin gets the nomination but she quits because its too hard, Herman Cain picksup where Sarah left off only to lose in a landslide against the Big O.

Yes, he's a farking shifty weasel to be sure, but his policies are not that insane. Unfortunately for him, that takes him pretty far away from the Republican base.

My hunch that with this position on this issue, is that he picks up more votes from the left of centre the votes he loses from the right of centre saying this.

The tea baggers won't respect any candidate that doesn't call the who AGW/ACC thing a hoax anyways.

Every position Romney takes is a precisely calculated. It is calculated to not give Obama something to attack him on and it is calculated on helping nor hurting your chances to get elected.

That as fine and good but when the campaign heats up, you need to believe in what you are spouting or people won't buy it. You have to embrace the derp and let it pass through you. Basically, Romney runs the risk of looking just like a pandering politiciation who doesn't really believe in anything.

All politicians pander but the secret is to appear genuine about it. (see Obama, Clinton, Palin, Edwards, Bush)

And that's the problem. The liberals aren't exactly a shining beacon of hope right now, but the current situation is producing a breed of people who belong to the party "Anyone-but-Republicans." They aren't going to prove you wrong. It is their party now.

Mormonism notwithstanding (though, by that metric, I'd have to disavow every politician), Romney has always struck me as a halfway sensible guy who's just too easily led and willing to spew the platitudes for his own good. Kinda like McCain, only without quite as much selling of his own soul.

I disagree that he's easily led. And he doesn't have a soul. I think he knows quite well what he's doing with all of his tactical shifts for or against whatever; he just doesn't value integrity, and thinks that no one else does, either. He wasn't a disaster as governor, and I'm not sure he would be as president, either. I think his top priority would be status quo, to not touch anything that might end up making him look bad (i.e., anything at all).

True. The only way he gets any votes from the teahadists is going full retard. He doesn't get any support for them just for challenging ACC. He's better off playing the long game. As much as I prefer Obama, I can't fault Romney on his strategy so far.

2011-06-09 10:34:56 AM
Maybe Romney will be a long term wake up call for the less than foaming wing of the republican party. After brushing him aside for some raving nitwit and getting trounced (again) by the kaptivating kenyan, maybe they'll realize that giving everything away to the rich, stomping out social services like they're a brush fire, and denying what's right in front of their face is a losing strategy. They need to jettison the dittoheads, the randroids, the archie bunkers, and the buried-school-bus-full-of-guns crowd once and for all.

I'd love to have a choice in the upcoming election, but as it is the only choices will be Obama and some republican who accepts the nomination at the creation museum while burning a tire with grandma's medicare card. And of course, a bunch of third party candidates who are all single-issue conservative nutters of various stripes.

Oh, I don't like him, either, and wouldn't vote for him in a million years, save for a "free strippers for everyone" platform adjustment. But I do think we get at least a peek at the possibility of a real human being resting beneath the surface when he admits to the existence of man-made climate change.

How about that? A politician who is concerned about life on this planet even after he is dead and gone.
I am impressed.

And BTW, Almost every religious person believes in science. That is a fact. Do you know how I know?
Everything around us since the invention of the wheel is science. The Amish have a buggy, they grease the wheels to avoid friction. Science. If you use practically anything, it was made with science. People no longer believe a steam locomotive is the work of the devil. They have come to accept science. It is thrust upon them, they are forced to learn, even if it's by learning from mistakes.

And then there are some who embrace science, who even go on to create Saran Wrap. Some others study the planet. I would rather trust information about our planet from someone who studies the planet, rather some blathering idiot who says God will take care of it.

People who ignore science don't do it because they don't believe in science, they do it because they choose to, and usually for monetary reasons. They use God as an excuse.
Any others are sheep.

I resented him, as a Massachusetts resident. He was elected on the basis of celebrity. Nothing more. Nobody could remember the names of the other candidates. But, if I'm to be completely honest, I want to have him as the Republican nominee.

I like having to choose between at least two quality candidates, and so long as Romney continues to resist the urge to pander, I could be happy with a President Romney. I doubt that he would win in 2012 at this rate, because he's about to be hit by so much flak from his right that even if he does win the nomination, the base won't show up for a midterm election. So really, I'm crossing my fingers for his candidacy in 2016.

Basic competency test to vote like

1) Is Africa a country or continent?
2) Did Paul Revere's Midnight run about warning the British or the American colonists?
3) What Montreal in France or in Canada?

Based on this, Palin would be allowed to run for President but would be considered to ignorant to vote. Just saying.
