He'll be fine.

That will be quite a feat.

No New York Democrat is going to lose their seat over this.

And of all the headlines I've seen of this, this is probably my fave.

Vom Weiner zum Würstchen.

If Weiner were Republican, yeah. But Democrats have an awful habit of eating their own to appear Serious.

No actual physical contact? He'll keep his seat.

I haven't been able to say this in the other Weiner threads because they got too long too quickly, but here goes: why the fark did Weiner think the laws of the Internet didn't apply to him? Why did he think he could get away with this kind of stupid behavior? This isn't 1962, and Weiner's not JFK. On top of that, he managed to give an aura of professionalism to Andrew Breitbart's paranoid ravings. FFS, dude. FFS.

Outspoken progressives like Weiner are exactly what we need to show the GOP as the clownshow it is, except they keep putting on red noses, rainbow wigs and floppy shoes and tweeting the resulting pictures to the world.

Why didn't he just sleep with these women? Then he could run for president. I'd say he'd have to switch parties, but not really.

/both sides are adulterers?

I saw this from another source (maybe it's around here somewhere, but I haven't seen it):

I wouldn't relish being in Weiner's position. After being grilled by the Media for details, the facts finally ketchup so he has to mustard up the courage to spill the beans and winds up skewered by public opinion. He will have to cash in all of his chips to hang onto his current roll.

Hubris + sex addiction = dick tweets.

As straightforward as F = ma.

As a republican you can claim you are the victim of the liberal media conspiracy, which is always a plus for the corrupt scumbag on the go.

I think he should resign, not for reasons of morality, but for his awful judgement and decision-making.

He's certainly in a pickle. Maybe some kraut will hire him if he resigns.

As long as he didn't cheat on his taxes or break the law w/the pix, I really don't care what he did.

/he's the rep for a good part of Brooklyn and Queens
//unless they force him to resign, he'll be fine

Especially considering how Internet savvy he appears to be. The most followed congressman on Twitter didn't understand how reckless this was? I think it just proves how strong human urges are. Guy goes from looking at being mayor of NYC and maybe even president some day to having this scandal forever define his legacy.

But he's done as a person to have on the television. Probably done in Democratic politics, in general.

Which is sad, because he truly was fun to watch.

As much as I'd like to see him stay, I think this has hurt his credibility too much and he's going to resign. First Spitzer, not Weiner. Can any promising Democrats from New York just have a little self-control?

/I know I wouldn't, but still....

Wyalt Derp: but for his awful judgement and decision-making.

That's kinda how I feel about the situation. What he did wasn't that big of a deal but the lack of judgement and self control was kinda a big deal.

2011-06-07 02:29:23 PM
I always knew he was an arrogant, nasty little prick. Now, I've been proved correct on all counts.

He lied about a junk shot and flirting online.
I suspect he won't have any serious problems keeping his seat.

Ok, let's be honest here: he just sealed the deal with some female voters and gay voters. No contact flirting? He seems to have pretty reasonable morals with regards to sex as well - which will impress many prudish voters. I'm willing to bet that he'll get re-elected with a larger margin than ever.

Who did he really offend? Exactly. He got a good deal of the country gawking at him for about a week. What better advertising could you want?

I saw some reports he may have used his staff to write a response for a porn star with whom he was exchanging steamy emails/tweets/whatever. That's a no-no. The Ethics Committee will give you a night in the box for that.

No, not that kind of box, you pervs.

Nope. No republican would go after Wall Street like he did.

I'm not so sure.

A) He's burned bridges with the Dems who publicly supported him when he was still denying everything - he lied to them too and they stuck their necks out.

B) Who wants to be seen with him? Who wants to jump on board with any of his future bills, committees, etc.?

C) Every time he shows his face to talk about anything, every time he's written about, people will be reminded of this.

I was a big fan, but he served the right wing tabloids a big scandal on a silver platter. He should have learned from Spitzer that if you are vocal and you speak truth to power, they will take you down. But he made it so damn easy for them to do it.

maybe if he came out of this looking good by manning up from the start but he didn't. He lied about it for more than a week only to come clean when more pics came out. I see no reason why this is going to help him. If the ethics probe finds fault the point is moot anyhoo.

He has a promising future as a pitchman for "Enzyt..." Isn't "smilin' John" in the can? Maybe we can have a before and after picture, with this famous gray underpants shot being the before...

Spitzer is a dem. He's on CNN isn't he?

I really wish someone would find somethign catastrophic to shut Andrew Breitbart down. Not since the days of Joe McCarthy have people had to live in a climate of fear over what one man will do next to destroy someone, even if he has to make shiat up to do it.

2011-06-07 02:35:16 PM
I'm not comfortable with the ease in which he lied to us.

canyoneer: Gee, I wonder why this guy would be desperate to hang onto his House seat?

(Article about congress members in general)

But I'm sure poor old Weiner just wants to unselfishly serve the people.

Wow, what a shiatty argument.

Dracolich: Who did he really offend?

That's the real question here. Nobody. Sure, it was shocking and stupid, but nobody is offended by it. What he did was dumb, but he didn't actually have an affair. He wasn't off screwing the secretary on company time, or picking up boys in airport bathrooms.

He'll be fine.

2011-06-07 02:37:19 PM
One thing is for sure, wingnuts are coveting pictures of wiener. Which is just as creepy as Weiner sending out tweets of his junk.

I don't know if anything so perfectly encapsulates American dysfunction.

2011-06-07 02:37:44 PM

skullkrusher: He lied about it for more than a week

He lied about being hacked. He didn't lie about it being his junk. He said "it may or may not be" which was a clear giveaway that he pretty well recognized it and just didn't want to admit it or lie about that. That much was obvious from the start. The red flag that it was his junk meant that he's also the type of person to take pictures of it, and it's not a far jump to think that someone that narcissistic would also share them.
