It's really kind of shocking how accurate Gattaca is turning out to be.

Wait until helicopter parents start genetically "enhancing" their kids. If such technology were possible they'd do it in a heart beat. Sociopathic snowflakes who may really be special is a scary thought.

Read 2184 by Martin Parish and be afraid. Be very afraid.

What? People are suddenly having a problem with taking a DNA test for every job including scrubbing toilets?

Think of the children.

Hardworking people could be having fun in unapproved ways and they must be denied employment!

And I know that even if enhancement was outlawed, the wealthy would just go outside the US or EU to get the procedure done, so there would be no way to stop it, especially because it would be so hard to prove.

Alright, I admit it, Gattaca makes me way more emotional than it should. It just gets so dusty in the room whenever he says that he didn't save anything for the swim back. That being said genetic privacy is going to cause all kinds of issues in the future, which is a shame, because you can't really help what you're born with.

Yeah, that scene gets me every time, too.

So if I can have my kid's genes tweeked for "charismatic sociopathic scientific and organizational genius with ambitions of being world dictator" it's all good, right?

I thought this was a Deadwood reference. It sounds like something Al would say.

Wow. I'm so relieved it's not just me. I keep swearing the cats are what's making my eyes water. . .

Personally, it's Jude Law's final trip that gets me. I just start bawling.

\has a sad now too

Not to mention, you shed your genome all over the place. If some unscrupulous person wants to know what your genotype is, all he has to do is wait for you to throw out a kleenex, or pull a hair off your head.

You think that's bad? It's a near certainty this kind of process would have a failure rare, especially in the early days, and in a lot of cases you would not know until the kid was older. Also consider what the poor kids where the process fails would have to go through. How would you like to live out your life with a deformity or mental illness or handicap, knowing that you could have been fine except for your parents thinking you weren't good enough to begin with?

Funny unfortunately the joke may be on us

The pampering and "special education" (think gifted and talented programs on steriods) these kids will recieve will mark them as special/superior in their own minds. So even if gen-modding like your kid turns out to be juck science like Eugenics, we will still end up with a large number of over achieving sociopaths who believe they are superior. God help us all if the results do not match tthe snowflakes expectations and they become cadre for revolutions.

Trying hard not to godwin

Morally bad and tragic. If you want to see bad wait until when these sociopaths start competing and getting into power, they will make wall street bankers look like boy scouts and quire boys.

Yeah, there are just so many ways this sort of thing can go horribly. horribly wrong, in very plausible and easily predictable ways, just based on standard human behaviours.

I really think that training in empathy and civic-mindedness might actually be in order. It's always been sort of assumed that it would be handled by the parents, but the possibilities inherent to stuff like this makes me think we can't leave it entire up to chance.

Just wait until they get hold of the collected writings of Ayn Rand.
