If only it were open season on people who ignore the "Slow Traffic Keep Right" signs. It would reduce a lot of the aggressive driving.

That's been a law here in PA for at least five years. I'd be stunned to discover that even a single citation was written for violating said law in those five years.

It's the slow drivers that make me aggressive. Especially when they're pulling onto 81 from a ramp at 45MPH.

Yep. Unfortunately I think some people define "slow" as "doing below the speed limit" and thus justify their staying in the left lane because they aren't "slow".

The majority of such programs, especially the federally-funded ones, are routine speed enforcement. Massachusetts used to do occasional "aggressive driving" enforcement that did not target the average guy going 80. They would take video of the driver playing freeway slalom into court. The patrols may have fallen victim to budget or staff cuts.

I don't care if they go after aggressive drivers as long as they go after the passive-aggressive ones too.

That's one way to close the budget gap.

More utter bullshiat. The highways would be a lot safer if I only had to watch out for the morons on the highway and not the ones in the weeds too.

Oh good, this looks like it's going to be another one of those "it's my right to go 20 MPH over the speed limit as long as I'm in the fast lane" threads.

The police are upstanding citizens of good moral character, are here to protect the general population and only look out for societies best interests.

The next motherfarker that stops at a Yield sign getting onto I-81 instead of MERGING is gonna have issues.

DjangoStonereaver: That's one way to close the budget gap.

Came here for this.

Unless they're planning on blowing the budget by lining the highways with police officers all the time, as soon as traffic is out of the immediate observation of the police it will go back to normal. This accomplishes nothing except revenue generation.

2011-06-07 10:31:04 AM
This should, in theory, result in more Marylanders getting stopped in Virginia.

I'm convinced only a small number of people in PA actually know how to merge onto a highway. A very small number.

what they need to do is make impeding the flow of traffic a felony. 2 or more cars behind you, $10,000 fine + jail if you don't get over.

FredaDeStilleto: It's the slow drivers that make me aggressive. Especially when they're pulling onto 81 from a ramp at 45MPH.

The drivers who don't know how to match speed in merging are annoying, but the only thing that "makes" you aggressive is your own lack of self control. Driving is a lot less stressful if you just chill out and accept that it's a frustrating experience and that there ARE going to be a lot of obstacles that you can't do anything about.

My wife is not one of them. I tell her every time we get on the highway to use the whole ramp and floor it until she's up to speed. I have to, because when I'm not playing attention or she's left to her own devices she piddles onto the highway at the beginning of the acceleration lane, not achieving the speed limit until well after she gets on the highway.

For my part, when some monkeynuts does that in front of me I flash past them in the acceleration lane and get in safely. Ironically, it causes them to step on it in pursuit of me so they can give me the finger or otherwise gesture at me. I take that as proof the strategy works.

These are called 'enforcers'. They're positive their speedo is DEAD ON ACCURATE and they KNOW they're going the fastest speed anyone should ever go.

It's like the state tourism people saying stay away from PA, DC, MD, VA. It's a mecca for dangerous drivers.

I like it.

Yes there are, out of state drivers. If I'm passing through Maryland I'll be in the right lane and passing everyone while swearing under my breath. Because everyone is in the left lane and doing 10 under the freaking speed limit.

Beside the under the speed limit folks, how about cracking down on those semis that play passing games with each other? You know side by side for 5+ miles down the highway... Even worse is when you have two semi trucks and you're coming up in the left lane. You're the only car visible on the freeway, but the asshole in the semi can't wait for you to overtake. So he swings into the left lane and you spend ten minutes watching them drive side by side.

I'm nice to Yellow drivers though. I once had a driver swing out into the left lane, suddenly realize I was coming up and he cut it back into the right and gave me a way to apologize. So that earned Yellow drivers a pass. At least until a bunch of them fark me over.

/I enjoy getting in front of said semi and slowing down to about 25 mph or so
//have fun shifting back up to speed funny man
/seriously semi drivers, I'm commuting in 638 HP car, just stay right and I'll be past you before you even notice

I've never seen that quote in any of these threads. I don't think I've even seen that sentiment. But you are entitled to your delusions. You are not a law enforcement officer. Drive safely and keep to the right if you are going slower.

THIS. If you can't get from a 30mph rolling start to 55mph in a quarter mile, you're either driving a '77 Mercedes 240 diesel or your competency behind the wheel is marginal at best. Or both.

What makes them "crazy"?

Just going over the speed limit by some set amount? Driving while on a cell phone? Or is it the guys who weave in and out (and 90% of the time don't even use turn signals)

ha-ha-guy: If I'm passing through Maryland I'll be in the right lane and passing everyone while swearing under my breath. Because everyone is in the left lane and doing 10 under the freaking speed limit.

Too many self-absorbed type-A folks in the DC area who feel entitled to the left lane... so the natural evolution of things is that the right lane is the new left lane. It works out. Just gotta be flexible.

2011-06-07 10:48:33 AM
Have you ever noticed that the people who drive really fast on the interstate invariably use their turn signals more than the people who go too slowly?

I'm not saying that aggressive drive is good. But I would like to point out that at least I can predict what an aggressive driver is going to do.

2011-06-07 10:48:53 AM
I'm constantly getting stuck behind people who don't accelerate in the on-ramp. It's frustrating because we hit the highway (100kph) at only 60 or 70 instead and I have to immediately hop in to the fast lane just to pass the slow dipshiat and get up to highway speed.

2011-06-07 10:49:13 AM
I don't mind police targeting aggressive drivers, and I speed all the time. It's not about the speed limit, it's about the flow of traffic. If traffic is moving 55, and you're weaving at 70, you deserve to be pulled over. Driving above the speed limit isn't inherently bad, it's the people that tailgate and weave that create dangerous situations. Only ticket I ever got was for "unsafe lane change" and I completely deserved it for driving like an asshole. Lesson learned.

\\Don't get me started on "Slower Traffic Keep Right". Americans are pathetic at that

Weaver95: In other words, the cops are running low on cash again and need to fill in the budget gaps with traffic ticket money.

Maybe so, but so what? I don't care what their motivation is as long as they nail a bunch of the worst aggressive drivers. Unfortunately, this probably just means "more speed enforcement" rather than actual observation for aggressive driving.

I'd like to see more camera monitoring of highways. If you had a big enough camera network, you could program computers to track a particular car as it moves from camera to camera, and have a human observe their overall driving behavior upon flagging them. Then you could nail them for aggressive driving, and use the video as evidence against them. A cop on the side of the road can only observe one isolated moment in a person's trip, but a camera network like that could see everything and flag the people who seem to be driving the most aggressively for human review (based on metrics like speed differential vs. other traffic, number of lane changes, etc). You could then get them for tailgating, unsafe lane changes, etc.

2011-06-07 10:50:43 AM
FredaDeStilleto: It's the slow drivers that make me aggressive. Especially when they're pulling onto 81 from a ramp at 45MPH.

The fundamental skills drivers in the greater DC lack are in the areas of merging and spacing. Crawling down the on-ramp is but one example. When they do come down the ramp at the proper speed, it's usually six cars bumper-to-bumper trying to merge into space barely big enough for one of them. Maryland's on-ramps provide another challenge, tending to be both short and curvy, effectively killing any chance you have of getting up to speed.

The folks already on the road aren't any better as they tend to travel bunched up and all it takes is one brake tap to force them all to a crawl. As Moe used to say, "Spread out you knuckleheads!"

The DC area also leads the country in the percentage of drivers that hit other cars ON PURPOSE. People actually admitted to it in a survey and the rate was four times higher than whoever was second.

/Oh, and Asians

2011-06-07 10:50:56 AM
General PSA: If I'm going 85 in a 65 and I switch to the left lane to pass a few cars and you are going 100mph and come up fast on me do not tailgate me a foot off my bumper and flash your lights!

I was going to get over as soon as I passed the people doing 70-75 in the middle lane but now I would rather tap my breaks then slow down to match the car next to me for a mile or so just to piss you off.

/Sure I'm an a-hole but they started it

2011-06-07 10:52:03 AM
Apparently the law in PA is "Keep left unless you're going so goddamn fast that it would just be inconvenient to do it every five seconds".
